I noticed that the Seahawks right gunner, on punts, beat his guy down field almost every time. He was 3 yards ahead of Forbes, who was supposed to be at least slowing him down on that last fumble. I think Smith was seeing him coming, which is not an excuse to fumble but our special teams problems are much deeper than just the returners... Does Forbes usually play there on punts returns?
Par for the course with our returns units. It is why it feels like every punt there are opposing players forcing fair catches inside our ten yard line.

I would give up the 13 pick for him. Would it take more than that?
I would try to give up the later 1st round pick and a 5th or 2027 4th. Not sure if that would suffice but I'd love to keep the earlier pick so if a blue chip player falls we are in business and if not, we can trade back and get more assets.

Think there was more to it though, ffs...Smith was so out of position for the catch that he fell over. How the fuck does THAT happen!?

Not only that but Whittington actively runs right to the first defender you see on some occasions. He is not even remotely a good returner.

Last good returner we had on this team was Horne. It's been that long. We've had ok types thereafter, but it's crazy to think about how this organization has not valued having an occasional score here or there to bolster the winning effort. And all it costs is a midround pick for someone with returner skills, as well as a roster spot.
A past his prime Dante Hall wasn't too bad in 2007 but the following year was his last as he had lost 'it'.

I think the hawks punter might have the best hang time in the league which allows returners too much time to think which is never good. An average gunner should be in the returners face most times. That's the kind of special teams detail that costs us time and again. First thing McVay needs to do is find the best possible Coach he can get. Pay what you need to to get the best guy. Also if Hunter is as good as he looked covering kicks then he should be active on gameday over Rivers even if Rivers is better in pass pro if needed. More emphasis on Special Teams.

The biggest thing to me is that just by Seattle having shahid we basically gave them the ball at the 35 every drive. On the other hand we were lucky if Whittington stumbled between the 25-30. It is an absolute must to get a weapon back there that poses a run back threat.

The Rams should covet Kaden Wetjen from Iowa. Not sure if he is entering the draft. Get some stud special team players now please.

Smith had a really difficult time fielding punts against the Panthers in the playoff game. He couldn’t get under the ball to catch it a couple of times and gave up field position. There was some talk that the wind was a factor that day. The way he struggled in Seattle made me wonder if he needs glasses. For gods sake your only job is to catch punts and you can’t do that. Obviously the interim special teams coach was in over his head. If Snead and McVay don’t get an established ST coordinator this offseason Rams special teams will be the definition of insanity. This has been a big issue since Fassell was fired. FIX IT MCSNEAD.

Yep. Our returners(which are skill positions) fall in line with my other broken record posts about the offense.

Slowish/over-achieving/not dynamic players….but who are good competitors, high character ppl, love football and are 100% bought into the program.

It’s hurting this team because while it’s a good, cohesive overall roster, there is NO ONE (besides Nacua) that scares defenses or special teams cover guys.

QB is elite OL is great, DL is great.

Rams need more elite talent by those who touch the football. That includes the returners. Good post @Psycho_X

Agree. Definitely need to upgrade the speed athleticism of the skill position players. I watched some long touchdown plays against the Rams this season and nobody was coming close to catching anyone. Definitely have a SPEED DEFECIENCY.

I only follow the Rams closely but the ST failures this year were epic for the Rams and likely the most significant for any team this year:

- Kicker/Kick Team cannot execute routine FG/XP kicks/contributed majorly to PHI and SF losses - fixed by replacing LS and Kicker
- Kick/Punt Team - gave up poor field position in many games/ contributed majorly to 1st SEA loss
- Kick/Punt Return Team - no threat/contributed majorly to 2nd SEA loss

Suffice to say if these failures could have been avoided the Rams would very likely be SB champs this year.
