One doesn't have to lift weights to get strong. There are such things as upside down push-ups, even one-handed upside down push-ups in the most extreme case. There is a slew of exercises that come under the umbrella of bodyweight training that preceded the current prevalent usage of weights.

BTW, Herschel Walker was famous for eschewing weights. He used to do daily sets totaling something like 500 push-ups and up to 2000 sit-ups.
