There are quite a few bad trades.

But ever since we got Bobby Wagner, I keep going back to that trade where we traded back in the Second round to get Pead and a fifth round pick that was absolutely worthless instead of picking Bobby Wagner which they have stated would have been their pick if they didn't trade back.

What do you guys consider the worst trade?

The Bettis trade comes to mind. I can't believe they thought Lawrence fucking Phillips could replace him....

Yeah I thought that was a horrible trade as well.

Was going to mention that as a runner up

The Eric Dickerson one really haunted this franchise. But with that haul of draft picks, it could've been our Herschel Walker trade. (Thurman Thomas was one player we could've drafted with our compensation, but didn't. )

I can't really think of any that was worse than trading Bettis. That's not hindsight either.

Brooks and Ortmayer were the only two in the Rams organization who even wanted it. John Shaw was against it. Georgia was too, she didn't want Phillips on her team. But the HC and GM were given their length of rope, and they promptly formed a noose and hanged themselves with it. That trade effectively got both of them fired.

The year they traded Bettis, he wasn't being used properly and didn't have a good year. I remember thinking at the time, why are they not using Bettis properly. Rich Brooks was such a terrible pro coach. Didn't do crap at Philadelphia either when given a second chance.

Both trades mentioned in this thread are pretty bad (Wagner and Bettis). You cant say the Dickerson trade was bad, just that we blew the picks. Rams are definitely on the side of having made good trades more than bad. John Hadl trade to Packers for THREE 1's was astounding. If you want to nitpick maybe we gave up too much for Watkins (a 2nd) or Peters (a 2 and a 4).

The Harold Jackson trade in 1968 was pretty short sighted. Immediately he went to Philadelphia and started tearing up the NFL. It was so obvious a mistake that the Rams traded back for him a few years later. But all that cost them was Roman Gabriel, which started the game of musical chairs at QB.

So true, if they had drafted Eddie George & Marvin Harrison over Eddie Kennison for that matter, they would have been fine.

But as fans we waited for an actual football guy instead of Shaw and it ended up being Ortmayer. John Shaw did three things right in all his years with the Rams. He hired Dick Vermeil, orchestrated the deal for Marshall Faulk and when Dick Vermeil wanted to hire Mike White as his OC in 1999, he overruled Vermeil telling Dick they felt they needed to go outside the organization thus leading to the hiring of Mike Martz, who was the QB Coach for Washington.

1996: Rams trade Jerome Bettis for draft picks
1657469240952.png

Bettis made the Pro Bowl in his first two NFL seasons with the Rams but struggled during 1995 after the franchise moved to St. Louis and hired a new coaching staff. Team and player decided to move on, with the Rams trading Bettis to Pittsburgh with a third-round pick for the Steelers' second- and fourth-round picks in 1997. St. Louis turned to draft bust Lawrence Phillips with its first-round pick in 1996 instead, while Bettis went on to produce six straight 1,000 yard rushing seasons in Pittsburgh and eventually was enshrined in Canton.

I don’t know, LP probably had way more given talent than JB, I actually recall liking the pick (foolish me not accounting the red flags) then along came reality with mental issues and ruined the whole thing

Bettis was really bad. Hard to remember one that was worse. Maybe trading down in 94 so the Shitters could take Bryant Young. Letting Kevin Greene go sucked too but yeah I'd go Bettis.

For some of the Old Guard I didn't like trading QB Ron Jaworski to the Eagles for TE Charles Young either. I really felt the Rams never gave Jaworski a chance to start, it was always, Harris or Haden, whereas Jaworski although being QB with victories over the Pittsburgh Steelers (1975) and in the playoffs against the St. Louis Cardinals, that same year, I will never understand why Knox went with a rusty Harris in the 1975 NFC Championship Game against Dallas.

The Los Angeles Rams traded 4 QB's in their history to the Philadelphia Eagles, it's amazing.

  1. Norm Van Brocklin 1958....Van Brocklin was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles for two players (offensive lineman Buck Lansford and defensive end Jimmy Harris) and a first round draft pick.
  2. Roman Gabriel 1973...Gabriel was traded from the Rams to the Philadelphia Eagles for Harold Jackson, Tony Baker, a 1974 first-round selection (11th overall–John Cappelletti) and first- and third-round picks in 1975.
  3. Ron Jaworski 1977....The Los Angeles Rams have traded the rights to Ron Jaworski, a quarterback, to the Philadelphia Eagles for the rights to a tight end. Charles Young
  4. Sam Bradford 2016....The Rams traded Sam Bradford to the Philadelphia Eagles for Nick Foles. The trade also saw the Rams walk away with the Eagles' 2015 NFL Draft fourth-round pick and their 2016 NFL Draft second-round pick

Bettis then Gabriel
Gabriel? That ended up being a tremendous deal for the Rams, Harold Jackson, Tony Baker and several high draft choices too. I understand that everybody loved Roman, but Hadl was MVP in 73 & Harold Jackson alone made that a good trade for the Rams IMHO.

The Rams didn't have much choice in that one.

Bettis was obviously dogging it to force a trade.
The Rams lacked the owner who could see the coach was a shitter. If you can't handle a superstar RB as a head coach get the fuck out of my facility and collect your check next tues.

Regardless, Bettis had become virtually useless as a Ram.

We can only guess at what was going on behind the scenes with that situation.

I dont remember it that way at all. Brooks came in and went with a volume passing attack and then told Bettis he was moving him to fullback. Crazy times, IIRC Rypien ended up with the most yards passing by a Rams QB in their first 3 starts, even thought they got blown out in each game.....
