Maybe now that only one dler will freelance a little instead of two the lber will know which gap to fill. Last year they seemed like they saw two holes to fill and couldn't decide which one to run to.

Wade had his issues with his DL last season.... it's just a plain fact. He decided to part ways with his longtime friend & DL coach Johnson. The biggest name in DL FA'cy last season was also not under consideration either to return. The big three DL'ers Suh/ Donald & Brockers were let's say produced poor results for most of the season. Bad combination IMO.
So Wade has got two brand new Suh replacements lined up for this season to go with a new DL coach from LA Chargers. Sebastian Joseph-Day was shelved for the entire season with instructions to get bigger stronger & thicker so he would be ready for some HD action in 2019 @ NT. Rookie SJD was 6-4 310 pounds when drafted no telling what he is now after a full year of grazing & lifting. Then Snead gave Wade a true blue-collar working NT from the fur NW Washington. Greg Gaines a 6-1 320 lbs is no Suh.....everything you can read about him makes you smile & just feel good inside.
When teams try to run against the Rams middle this season they might find that SJD & GG will stayed home & remain in their assigned lanes to crushed & disperse all those running blocks & shut down all those 2018 DL Grand Canyon-sized gaps.

I think you have to be more realistic on who will even make the team first ?? How many players on defense??

Then special teams is a way The Rams will add there depth & get there game day roster from the 53 .
Kiser has his work cut out for him !! On paper & during the preseason I was a believer. I have to think The Rams need to get a long term deal done with Cory Littleton??
I see The Rams going bigger this season without Mark Barron !! I think Clay Matthews is that guy & letting the DB’s match up space in front of them.
This means a better pass rush and more moving around in space. Which The Rams don’t have to have that slow thumper type of MLB .
Have a whole offseason to discuss it. Right now The Rams are just clearing off the dust to see what they have. Health will play a issue.

Now that I’ve officially ran through all day one and day two draft selections in the 2019 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams, it’s time to dive into day three. The first on the list is Washington Huskies DT Greg Gaines.
Gaines was a four-year contributor with the Huskies totaling 149 tackles, 21.5 tackles-for-loss, 9.5 sacks, and even one interception in his college career. He was a Senior who also participated in the Reese’s Senior Bowl.
Let’s take a look at the write-up:
Limited athletically, but perfect for the role he’s used in. Not great off the snap, can see his lack of explosion/athleticism often in pass rush. If he doesn’t come off explosive as a pass rusher (timing snaps), he loses the rep. Active hands but often lets offensive lineman into his chest, makes pass rush completely stale on those reps. The active hands are nice though, and he possesses a good swim move. Can look the part of a pass rusher every now and again when he bursts off the line of scrimmage. High motor. Does a good job re-setting the line of scrimmage. Can 2-gap. Productive stacking and shedding offensive lineman, making tackles at the line of scrimmage or just past on ball carriers. Very solid run defender. Runs to the ball even when its not close to him.
This rep here isn’t anything special, but it’s exactly what Gaines will be asked to do when sandwiched between DT’s Aaron Donald and Michael Brockers. Gaines uses his power and leverage to stand the offensive lineman up, watches the running back choose his gap, and disposes the blocker to make the tackle for essentially no gain:
Like I said above, Gaines is actually a really tremendous run stuffer, and not only that, but he does offer some pass rushing ability. Don’t get me wrong, Gaines will never be confused for Aaron Donald, but when he can time the snap well and come out his stance with explosion, he can collapse the pocket effectively. His strong hand usage allows him to remain effective on passing downs, though a lot of his rushes can result in a stale effort too. His pass rushing efforts are a mixed bag, though his run stuffing prowess isn’t in question. Gaines was added to play the part of nose tackle on run downs, and then potentially get subbed out for a more athletic pass rusher, or even to potentially affect quarterbacks by himself. Day three is the perfect spot to find role players who fill specific assignments, and Gaines is sure to help the Rams’ run defense (they weren’t good in 2018) in a major way.

General manager Les Snead and head coach Sean McVay specifically mentioned using Gaines at the nose tackle spot in base packages, putting emphasis on the former Huskie’s ability to stay disciplined and stop the run.
Here are three things to know about Gaines:
1. CALI NATIVE
Gaines joins fellow draftee, cornerback David Long, as a Southern California native returning home for his first professional season as Ram. The young D-lineman was born in La Habra, Calif., and played four years at La Habra High School — just an hour from the L.A. Memorial Coliseum.
2. FIRST NFL GAME… EVER
In his conference call with Los Angeles media after he was drafted No. 134 overall, Gaines disclosed that his first game with the Rams will have special significance.
“I’ve never personally been to an NFL game, so my first NFL game — I’ll be playing in it hopefully,” Gaines said. “I grew up in L.A. and there were no teams anywhere nearby, so we just never got to go to an NFL game.”
3. THE PAC-12’s BEST
Gaines was voted as the top defensive lineman in the Pac-12 by his conference opponents in his final season at Washington, earning the Morris Trophy. In 14 games as a redshirt senior, Gaines posted 55 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and an interception — a statline good enough for First Team All-Pac 12 honors.

When the 2019 NFL draft wrapped up, Les Snead made it abundantly clear just how badly the Los Angeles Rams wanted Greg Gaines. He said the team entered Day 3 with the goal of trying to find a way to select Gaines, which they did in Round 4.
They moved up 28 spots to make it happen, showing how much they valued Gaines as a potential replacement for Ndamukong Suh. The Rams aren’t the only ones who view him as such, either. Mel Kiper of ESPN believes Gaines can step right in and be an instant contributor for Los Angeles.
Kiper picked 15 “instant-impact rookies” from the 2019 draft and Gaines was among them.
This pick is all about filling a specialized role on first and second downs. There weren’t many true nose tackles in this class, especially outside the first two rounds. The 312-pound Gaines, though, can replace free agent Ndamukong Suh at the nose in Wade Phillips’ defense. Gaines won’t do much as a penetrator, but he will help plug the middle of a leaky defense that allowed an NFL-worst 5.1 yards per rush last season.
Gaines isn’t the biggest defender, standing just 6-feet-1, but he’s stocky and does a great job eating up blocks. He won’t be asked to rush the passer the way Suh did, but he should be an upgrade in the run defense department.
Fixing that area of the front seven was a priority for the Rams this offseason and they did a good job addressing it by grabbing Gaines in Round 4.

I feel much better about our defense overall this year.the secondary so better. The linebackers are better and I even think that the run defense will be better with gaines INSTEAD of suh.
