6’1
312 lbs

2018 Morris Trophy Winner
2018 All PAC -12 First team
Career stats 19.5 sacks and 149 Tackles

Gaines' stout build and hustle have earned him all-conference honors after each season since his redshirt year in 2014. The All-State and All-Orange County selection from La Habra, California started six of 13 games played in 2015, receiving honorable mention notice from Pac-12 coaches (28 tackles, one for loss). He was an honorable mention choice again as a sophomore, making 35 stops, eight for loss, and 3.5 sacks as a 14-game starter that year. Gaines plowed through the line for 30 tackles, five for loss, 2.5 sacks, and three pass breakups in 13 starts as a junior, achieving second-team all-conference status. He was a first-team pick in 2018 as he started 14 contests and racked up career highs in tackles (55), tackles for loss (6.5) and sacks (3.5) while also intercepting a pass.

That one surprises me. Stout run stopper at NT but doesn't provide a lot of juice as a pass rusher.

He does sort of fit the Wade mode though in that he is not giant. Under 6' 2" and just over 300 lbs I think. Not a big space eater NT.

I like it , depth at DL was a big concern. Not a fast guy , but he should help with run stop and keeping guys fresh.

I like to see how wade uses these guys with Suh gone .

Yes, his dimensions wouldn't make you think space-eating NT, but that's what he can do. He's country strong with natural leverage. Very hard to move.

I like the sound of that.
Rams need this sort of guy in their DL rotation in my humble opinion.

I am liking the Rapp pick more and more. The rap on him (pun intended) in the write ups are very, very similar to Johnson.
Could be a good teaming at S in time.

Rams have Sebastion Joseph-Day and now have added Gaines at NT for next year. Both rotation players, Brockers can fill the spot on occasion too.

The more I research this guy the more I think he will do well in between Brockers and AD. Honestly we need a run stopping NT and this is what he specializes in. A lot of the times if you look at the film Suh freelanced and got out of his responsibility lanes on some big run plays.

I’m glad he’s gone and think with some work Gaines could work out for us.

I was rooting for Wren or Mack but this guy actually produced and progressed in his college career!

Good pick up!

Gaines is a 2 down guy to start, then we sub him w/ JFM. Not sure if Smart makes the 53 man roster

I like the idea of Myers taking over at end with Gaines rotating with brockers
