None of the rookie TE's outplayed the water-bottle-boy/girl this preseason. Mundt won the 3rd TE spot mostly by default.

Mundt could be one of the players that the Rams might use to wiggle the initial 53 roster to keep sneak players off & on with. Mundt will not generate much interest in the NFL if he were to be released. Rams could later in the week add him back to the 53 MR without too much gamble.
True. I was partly kidding. There is a funny connection with Mundt I was at a funeral for my moms cousin earlier this month at grampa McVay’s church up here in NorCal and the pastor overheard me talking to one of my relatives from SoCal about the Rams. He chimes in, “My nephew plays for the Rams.”

I got pretty excited. Turns out his sister is Johnny Mundt’s gramma. :) We talked a little bit. The pastor is a whiner fan, of course, but he is excited for his nephew. I guess Johnny Mundt got married earlier this summer and he was at the wedding.

The elder McVay keeps tabs on Johnny and has given the pastor feedback after church sometimes.

Kinda cool.

Los Angeles Rams preseason week four: Stock up, stock down

The offensive trio of John Wolford, Nsimba Webster, and KhaDarel Hodge continue to contribute. Could any make the roster?

Preseason week four has officially ended, wrapping up the “pretend” games and shifting our focus to the kickoff of the 2019 NFL season. The Los Angeles Rams finished the preseason with a 2-2 record as they defeated the Houston Texans 22-10 on Thursday night.
Let’s have a look at the players who trended upwards, as well as their counterparts who’re headed in the wrong direction. Note: Lots of players were held out of this contest.

Stock Down

QB Brandon Allen
In what has seemingly become a theme this preseason, Brandon Allen put forth quite an awful performance. Allen went 12/17 for 120 yards passing and two interceptions, sailing multiple passes once again. There was no point this preseason where Allen played like he deserved a roster spot, and he surely wont get one over John Wolford (whether that’s on the 53 or practice squad).

Stock Up

QB John Wolford
On the opposite end of the spectrum, John Wolford played lights out once again as he went 8/15 for 105 passing yards and two touchdowns. Wolford looked calm, cool, and collected all game once again. His composure and ability to use his mobility/make throws on the run is highly impressive. Not only that, but Wolford maneuvered within the pocket marvelously on Thursday night. Wolford has an outside shot of sticking on the 53-man roster, though it’s more likely the Rams try to stash him on the practice squad.
WR KhaDarel Hodge
KhaDarel Hodge was the best skill player on the team as he reeled in all five of his targets for 76 receiving yards. Hodge stands out every preseason game as a playmaking receiver ready to be rostered on the 53-man active roster. Whether or not he makes it is question. Hodge has 100% earned the opportunity to be rostered though, as he’s done nothing but impress rep after rep this preseason.

WR Nsimba Webster
Like Hodge, Nsimba Webster has separated himself as an undrafted free agent receiver this year. Webster does most of his work in the short-to-intermediate part of the field, showing great awareness by sitting between zones, strong hands that pluck the ball with ease, and the toughness to head upfield for extra yardage. Webster had a fantastic catch in the right corner of the endzone from Wolford. Webster was targeted six times, managing to bring in four of those balls for 38 yards and a touchdown.
RB Justin Davis
Justin Davis didn’t get a ton of run this preseason, though he’s always been a productive zone scheme runner for the Rams, with that trend continuing on Thursday night as Davis toted the rock 16 times for 78 yards and one touchdown. Davis’ skillset fits the offense well, and though he wont be a factor in the offense during the regular season, he could develop on the practice squad.
EDGE Ogbonnia Okoronkwo
Ogbo continued his string of strong performances with a six-tackle, two-sack, and two tackles-for-loss contest. Ogbo looked potent off the edge once again. The only nitpick is Ogbo has a lot of rushes that are stale and end up with him losing his balance/ending up on the turf, though he produces regardless.

Man TST is just pure comedy gold especially some of our former brothers comments there :)

You had me agreeing until this line lol. McVay wants that playoff experience in his backup just in case.

Wolfy is more a question of do they think he can be a primary backup. Would you be able to win games with him in there? He won the QB3 job clearly but that doesn't mean they see him as a long-term answer. Put him in there with the 1s for five or six games and you'll know for sure (i.e. we don't know right now) but with Bortles we do know he can win games and that is very valuable.

These are all tough choices, yet somehow Mannion again got the nod for #2 back-up in 2018. For me, based on Wolford's play, Bortles becomes expendable should Snead truly be in search of a value trade which fills a higher need. Of course, McSnead may feel no such pressure to do so as we fans have extremely limited knowledge for what's going on in those back-room meetings. As deep as we are at WR, I also considered similar options with Reynolds. It's easy to see why McVay would be more comfortable with a veteran like Bortles while on a Super Bowl hunt, but when Bortles is gone after this season, will the Rams be able to secure an inexpensive young reserve QB who has shown as much ability as has Wolford this pre-season ? Are we trading the future for the present, or are we all simply making too much of Wolford being lost to waivers ?

Fair questions. But I tend to think that McVay is like Shanny Jr, where he can maximize his QB talent so I would use that by drafting a guy he likes midrounds next year. Which allows us to keep better talent for the 2 QBs we will keep to throw to.

Saturday will be interesting though. Wolfy might have made it. I can certainly see the value in keeping him, I just value the WR talent more on this roster.

Yeah I'm not sure I was serious but he is the most tradeable piece and I want another lineman more than I want a so-so QB and a weak line.

You Lol'd ... did you really? You maybe pushed air out of your nose but I doubt you laughed out loud.
Maybe you did, maybe you sit around on the internet just laughing out loud like a madman at everything....

SOME people use "lol" as just a cocky way to be rude when disagreeing with someone online who can't kick your ass for it.
That's how I use it anyway, lol.

Extremely funny now. Yeah - I probably need a good ass kicking, but I don’t sit around on the internet.

Now you really got me laughing out loud. My cat is even looking at me cross-eyed.

Your not looking at the big picture to tell you the truth with Bortles, plus he is an experienced playoff QB.

1. Goff & Bortles are tight !! What he brings to the Qb room is priceless.
2. Lol - I remember before the draft people on the site blasted me because I said The Rams were not going to draft a QB.Then I posted a reply back because I did not get a Rod bet on it from a poster. Now I’m being cocky, but Wolford should benefit being on the practice squad with Bortles on the squad.
3. The Rams signed Bortles to only 1 million. A lot for you .I am sure, but a big
Pay cut for Blake. My point is you can’t trade him because of the contract.

Respect the veterans The Rams bring in. Mcvay is not going to change the culture.
If The Rams trade Bortles . What happens to the next FA that wants to sign with The Rams.

It does get me laughing because of those reasons. Didn’t mean to be to much of a dick, but I do like a little debate.

First, Bortles isn't taking a cut in pay to be with the Rams. The Jags are still paying him, and the $1mil the Rams are paying is being deducted from what they owed, so he's receiving another $5.5mil or so.

It's doubtful Bortles would be traded at this time anyway, but if a team loses a starter sometime during the season, and overtures are made to the Rams, I would expect them, if the price was right, to approach Bortles about the offer. It could be that after working with McVay during the pre-season and a few more games into the year, that Bortles may be ready for a new project. His cost won't allow him to return to the Rams next year, so both the Rams and Bortles should take advantage of any decent proposal if one comes up. Of course, if Wolford is lost to the Rams by our not keeping him, then this option is also lost. jmo.

Fair - crazed thi
Edwards was projected in the 2nd round after his jr season, stayed at Wisconsin and played injured his senior season and fell to us it the 5th round
train

So he looks like a steal ??? Is he better than Evens who was drafted before him ??

Why was that as well ??

Winners
UDFA- OG/OC Vitas Hrynkiewicz- demonstrated solid pass blocking & run blocking @ OG.

ER- UDFA rookie Landis Durham has great size & speed could easily play DE in place of John Franklin-Myers or Morgan Fox.....neither JFM or Fox have done anything of substance this preseason but Durham has!

Loosers
*#3rd round selection CB David Long showed nothing. The Rams will cut at least two much better playing corners than rookie Long today & tomorrow. He has not earned a position on this team.

*All three of the rookie TE's.

DL- John Franklin-Myers- took several step backwards from his rookie season

Why is Ramon Richards not getting any love ? I think he plays a solid FS

When you have Eric Weddle, JJ III, Taylor Rapp, Marqui Christian, Steven Parker & Nick Scott in front of RR in the depth chart @ safety it's hard to save enough love to go that deep.

My belief is RR is much more Nickle & Dime corner & deep safety than a general around type combo SS/FS that Wade prefers in his secondary.

I notice very early from TC that Marqui Christian had trimmed down considerably from last season. MC was also seen lining up deep in the DB in scrimmages . The previous two seasons MC was not normally placed in deep coverage situations but usually utilized up close to the LOS or as the Nickle ILB'er. I am always worried when I see MC forced into deep coverage. MC changed his number too to #26 maybe that helped him look even smaller. This change by Wade did not help RR chances. Then the explosion of Rapp as a rookie really hurt RR. Then there is Bones man crush on Nick Scott to figure into the outcome.......that's how I saw it.

probably slid due to his performance during his senior season, played with an injury(showed a lo of heart) but was the injury resolved or something permanent.. I have no idea of the reality, but could be the reason for his lasting until round five.

My understanding is that Edwards is fully healthy, but is still building up the strength he lost due to the injury - that was a big part of his offseason, and will continue through next offseason. But even with that, he looks like a keeper and a serious bargain.

It is interesting how much work the backup O’line got & how they cross trained. They got game time experience really fast,
