Yeah, I don't think they want to replace Karty, personally. That kid was nails at Stanford and is a smart cookie. This is a coaching issue from what I've seen. Even the blocking assignment mismatches are on Blackburn.

It’s Ethan Evan tapping twice before the ball is snapped. That signals to the opposing team to time their rush and collapse the middle of the line for the blocked field goal. This in effect will mess Karty’s kick-thru motion and timing. Karty is not the problem. Karty is an excellent kicker. It’s the entire ST operation and Chase Blackburn needs to figure this out.
Watching his interview yesterday, you got the sense that he didn't want to say what the problem was, like he knows it's not him. He literally said "no comment" when asked what the issues were.

Freaking Ethan Evans is a stud as a punter. His kickoffs are impressive as well. When it comes to holding & passing,he ain’t no Johnny Hecker.
I concur, not sure why Evans has struggled here, but he is a great punter, however, if the FG operation is a result of him, the Rams might have to make a move in that area if he continues to struggle.

Bring in a kicking guru. Blackburn's expertise, if he has one, is probably coverage schemes. Bring in an ex-kicker who is good at working with the kicking game, to support Blackburn. Then figure things out in the offseason about whether to bring in a new STs coach.
I was just thinking the same thing. anything to keep the peace and cohesion of the team 1st and fix it on the sly. which is good coaching from McVay. go rams.

I would put at the minimum the back-up QB as the holder if Evans is the problem.

Never did figure out why the punter is the holder. I know Hecker was a hell of a holder and could pass as well.

Of course Karty is a big part of the problem.

If a kicker has to have everything so absolutely perfect to be successful that's a problem.

It would be as if Stafford would have to have perfect protection to be successful or Williams to have perfect run blocking to get 5 yards every time he touches the ball.

You have to be able to adjust.... even if a missed or not so perfect execution comes from an area you are not in control of.

That's just not how it works in the kicking game. EVERYTHING is choreographed. The timing, the exact position to stand before the snap, the angle of the ball on the ground, location of the laces, etc... Then the kicker has to hit it just right. One deviation in the process often means a failed attempt no matter who is the kicker. The kicker generally DOES have to have everything perfect on every kick. It's not even remotely similar to QB or RB play.

We can argue whether it's the kicker, the coaching, the long snapper, the blocking scheme, etc... He finished the year very well last season. Hopefully they can get at what has changed and correct it. If it is indeed the kicker, fine. I just don't recall seeing all these glitches happening last year. I don't recall seeing the line getting completely blasted. And I don't recall everything looking so sloppy.

I almost completely agree with your statement. Just one caveat - his timing to kick the ball is too slow. He needs to be in motion before the ball is on the ground. That should be fixable.

You’d think that would be fixable. And hopefully they are aware of the cause for the delay. Is it Karty needing to speed it up? Or is it the pre kick process that has to get better so he can confidently start his stride earlier?

Maybe a sports psychologist might be in order for Karty. Especially now the whole Rams fan base is overly focused on him.

Just here alone he's the bell of the ball.

Well it IS a thread about him. And just because you’ve convinced yourself he’s the problem, not everyone has to see it the same. Don’t confuse not giving up on a player that performed pretty damn well for us last year with unwavering devotion of some sort.

Well I'm not the only that's convinced.... I'm sure if McVay wasn't convinced Karty wasn't the problem he wouldn't have signed another kicker.

It has to deal with practice time. The reason the punter holds is because they can practice continually as a unit, without taking away practice time from other players.

Unless they’re using him as a practice squad kicker as they now have 2 long snappers and 2 kickers.
