You know the more I think about it, the more it seems your point is not really the small picture. His experience and the fact he's the best lineman when healthy might punch his ticket this season.

I personally prefer they cut him, but when you look at this line overall it might end up being a wise decision to keep him around. If he does have a bounceback season and kills it without getting hurt it would be an enormous boost to this offense.
if nothing else, he is a solid backup for every line position except center. but probably a starter if he can stay healthy.

Rodger Saffold (if healthy) might very well be Rams best overall OL'er to start @ Left Tackle. Another thought here in these pro & con discussions on Rodger Saffold.....is how many Ram OL'ers did we have issues with due to injuries last season. Rams had only two uninjured starters remain in our lineup in 2015 center Tim Barnes & OT Greg Robinson.

ORG Cody Wichmann injured in TC for 3 months
OLG Rodger Saffold injured in the 1st pre season game missed rest of pre season then injured in 5th game missed 11 games. IR'd
ORT Rob Havenstein injured early but continued to play injured another lower leg area & went out in game 8 returned for game 10 went out again and came back injured game 12.
ORG Jamon Brown injured in game 10 IR'd.
ORT Darrell Williams injured in game 10 IR'd.
ORT Andrew Donnal injured after starting two games only played in 5 games.

Ram have a Long Long Long Long .......LONG history of OL injuries that still haunts this Ram team. With the release of the big three JC/CL/JL ...I am no longer banging the big bass drum for the need to release Saffold as I was before these latest moves. The cap relief came & now I feel better. I am Ok with Saffold being retained but in the plans for him to start @ anywhere but the LEFT OT post.

I would prefer that RS be the top game day reliever. Reason?? Why when you have a Garrett Reynolds? OK What happens if Garrett Reynold beats out all comers as the best Ram starting OLG in 2016? Who going to be you top game day reliever?
this team has had Oline problems for years now, i dont want to see a good/versital Olineman cut just because he might get hurt. medical science has gotten to the point that alot of these injuries heal stronger than they were before. look at last year as an example, how many people thought the Rams were stupid for using the #10 pick on a RB who had had major knee surgery less than a year before? didnt look like he was having too many issues with his knee last season.

-Rams LT Rodger Saffold will undergo an MRI on his shoulder Sunday night. Coach Steve Spagnuolo called the injury a "ding" in his post-game presser, so it sounds like the Rams are only doing the MRI as a precaution. The rookie Saffold has also been playing through an ankle injury, although the Rams held the John Abraham-less Falcons without a sack in Sunday's 34-17 loss.

-Rams LT Rodger Saffold's Monday MRI revealed no structural damage in his "dinged" shoulder.
Saffold is considered "day to day" entering a Week 12 game against the Broncos. The Rams are optimistic that the solid rookie will be able to start.

-Rams LT Rodger Saffold said he'll play in Week 12 and his shoulder injury is "just something that I'm going to deal with the rest of the season."
An MRI on his shoulder came back clean, but Saffold said the ailment was "really hurting" during Sunday's game. He's also dealt with an ankle injury, so his effectiveness could be compromised going forward, but the impressive rookie will tough it out.

2011
-Rams LT Rodger Saffold was forced from Sunday's game against the Packers with an ankle injury.
Saffold suffered the injury on a fourth down where the Rams allowed a sack. He remained down on the ground for several minutes before being helped to the sideline. He struggled to put weight on his left leg as he walked off. Saffold has struggled this season after turning in an excellent rookie campaign in 2010, but an extended absence would be crushing news for an awful Rams line.

-An MRI of Rodger Saffold's left leg has come back negative, and the Rams' left tackle is being called day-to-day.
At first deemed an ankle ailment, Saffold's injury is actually to his left fibula. He'll likely be limited in practice this week, but should be able to take the field against the Cowboys on Sunday. If not, it's unclear how a team with precious little offensive line depth would replace him.

-Rams LT Rodger Saffold was forced from Sunday's game against the Browns with a head injury, and will not return.
He's likely suffered a concussion. Sam Bradford's blindside protector has been replaced by Mark LeVoir, who was signed off the practice squad just 18 days ago. The Rams are already without RT Jason Smith, who is dealing with a concussion.

-The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Rams LT Rodger Saffold suffered a "significant" pectoral injury this week and may need season-ending surgery if it's determined to be a tear.

Saffold, who got hurt in the weight room, will presumably undergo a Saturday MRI to determine the severity. Journeyman Mark LeVoir has taken all of the left tackle reps in Rams practice this week. After a promising rookie season in 2010, Saffold has been one of the worst starting offensive linemen in football this year, particularly in terms of penalties and pass blocking. LeVoir still projects as a downgrade. This is a concern for the entire Rams offense moving forward.

-Rams placed LT Rodger Saffold on injured reserve with a torn pectoral, ending his season.

2012
-Rams LT Rodger Saffold was carted off the field in Sunday's game with a neck injury.

Battling with Lions S John Wendling, Saffold banged his head into another lineman, and immediately went down in a heap. He remained down for several minutes before being strapped down and carted to the locker room in a scary scene. He reportedly has feeling in his extremities. Saffold has been replaced by Wayne Hunter at left tackle. With C Scott Wells out with a foot injury, the Rams have lost 40 percent of their offensive line this afternoon.

-Rams LT Rodger Saffold exited Sunday's Week 2 contest with a first-quarter knee injury.

Saffold surprisingly returned to practice on Wednesday and started the game after spraining his neck in the Week 1 opener. He took a big hit following a fumble recovery and was shown limping to the sideline. His return is questionable.

-Rams LT Rodger Saffold's Week 2 knee injury has been diagnosed as a grade-three MCL sprain.

-Rams LT Rodger Saffold left Sunday's win over the Bills with a back injury.

Saffold left in the third quarter and was unable to return. The Rams completed their comeback with Wayne Hunter protecting Sam Bradford's blind side.

2013
-Rams RT Rodger Saffold suffered a left shoulder injury in Thursday's preseason opener against the Browns and did not return.

Saffold, trying to make the switch from left tackle to right tackle, was hurt on the second offensive play. He was expected to see more reps than the other offensive line starters to get him better acclimated to the right side.

-Coach Jeff Fisher revealed RT Rodger Saffold dislocated his left shoulder in Thursday night's preseason opener, and is expected to be sidelined "a couple of preseason games."

-Rams RT Rodger Saffold was carted off the field in the second quarter of Sunday's Week 2 game against the Falcons with a knee injury.

This is becoming a weekly thing for Saffold. He can never seem to make it through a game without getting hurt. Joe Barksdale is in at right tackle.

-Rams RT Rodger Saffold suffered a sprained MCL in Sunday's Week 2 loss to the Falcons.

2014
-Ex-Rams G/T Rodger Saffold has failed his physical with the Raiders, voiding his five-year, $42.5 million contract.

-Rams agreed to terms with G/T Rodger Saffold on a five-year contract.

-Rams RG Rodger Saffold was forced from Saturday's preseason game with a right ankle issue.

Saffold was first spotted with ice on his ankle before graduating to an air cast. Saffold was making his preseason debut after missing the first two games with a shoulder "stinger." For now, he should be considered day to day.

-Rams LG Rodger Saffold left Sunday's Week 1 opener against the Vikings with a neck injury and will not return.

The Rams were getting blown out 34-3 when Saffold was hurt, so there was no reason for him to return. Annually injury-prone, the Rams need Saffold to stay on the field. No. 2 pick Greg Robinson entered at left guard.

-Rams RG Rodger Saffold exited Week 8 against the Chiefs with a shoulder injury.

The Rams have lost Saffold, C Scott Wells, and LT Jake Long in this one. Veteran Davin Joseph has entered at right guard. LG Greg Robinson has shifted to left tackle, with Mike Person playing left guard. Second-year OL Barrett Jones is in at center. Justin Houston is wreaking havoc on Austin Davis.

Rams RG Rodger Saffold's shoulder injury is to the same shoulder that caused his failed physical with the Raiders.

2015
-Rams LG Rodger Saffold needs offseason shoulder surgery.

-Rams RG Rodger Saffold was forced from Sunday's game against the Packers with a right shoulder injury, and will not return.

Saffold went down early in the first half, and was ruled out in the third quarter. Garrett Reynolds should finish the game at right guard.

-Rams placed RG Rodger Saffold on injured reserve with a shoulder injury, ending his season.

Saffold has a long history of shoulder issues, and will undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum. Saffold had left shoulder surgery in January. Saffold has been one of the league's worst guards this season, but it's still a blow for rookie runner Todd Gurley. The No. 10 overall pick is going to have to deal with atrocious blocking as he attempts to put the Rams' offense on his back. Garrett Reynolds is taking Saffold's place in the starting lineup. Saffold has three seasons remaining on the five-year, $31.347 million pact he signed in March 2014. He could be a candidate for a restructuring in the offseason.

I just think there's too much upside in Robinson to have him sit as the 6th OL. Dude straight moves people in the run game. Seems like he's just a slow learner but I'd rather give him the game reps and develop him into an elite LT as opposed to just getting an average/good one.
That might be too tall of an order but he was improving down the stretch. I think it'll only stunt his development to move him inside or give him more than 1 position to focus on at a time.

Dude it's unbelievable how fragile he is. If Bradford is considered injury-prone then...
If games started and left due to injury counted as games missed, Saffold's career would make him a spectator.

I been saying now for years & you been with me for a long long time too .....Rodger Saffold may be the most injured OL'er .....EVER!

Just seems we have very very short memories.

Here's the short version @-X-

Always injured. Not limited to the shoulder(s) Literally from head to toe.
I know. We're just playing around here, but I think our situation on the O-line is serious. We're never in a position where we have deep rotation, and I don't think we can afford to toss aside a guy who can fill multiple spots and play them well. Maybe he'll get injured again, but maybe he wont. I'd rather take a chance on him staying healthy than bank on the opposite and lose a very solid lineman. So that's what I'd do. Build the line, protect our QB and I'll make Mexico pay for his contract.

Thank you.

I don't disagree with this.
I am in the minority in wanting Saffold retained, although, not at the expense of other guys.
Penn is 32, the Raiders have more cap room than the Rams. A two year deal at $8M per? Sure, I could see that. I don't know if Oakland would let him walk for that and I don't think the Rams have any interest in moving Robinson back to G for two years.
