He moved when the cop asked him to. Maybe it wasn't far enough for the cop, but he did move, and it's up to the cop to keep his cool and explain things, not Branch; we're talking about public servants vs. private citizens, so the onus is on the officer to not escalate - to deescalate, for that matter - unless he has a reason to fear for his life or the lives of other people.

Branch was also on a public sidewalk when he was asked to move. It's not illegal to be on a public sidewalk. It's not illegal to be out late at night. Unless there's a crime or emergency happening on that sidewalk or on the street next to it, Branch has every right not to move. Even if it was a crime or emergency, if Branch didn't move far enough, again, the onus is on the officer to deescalate, not arrest Branch for not moving far enough and "smirking". Even if he is being a punk in the process - which, as of yet, we don't know either way - that doesn't mean he should be arrested and charged with misdemeanors for supposed "disrespect".

I'm willing to wait for more info to come out for all sides, but right now, this seems like nothing that Branch should've been arrested over.

So he was blocking the entrance to a business on the sidewalk and was asked to move so people could get in and out and he ignored multiple requests then got arrested? Sorry by that account sounds like he was just being a little punk. I'm sure more info will come out but all this arguing and I've yet to see anybody say anything substantial to what happened.

I continued to give Zacharia Branch verbal commands to move from blocking the sidewalk and advised that if he did not, he would receive a citation for blocking the sidewalk. Zacharia Branch smirked, then stepped backwards and to the right, then remained standing upon the public sidewalk, so as to obstruct, hinder, and impede free passage upon the sidewalk as well as impede free ingress/egress to or from the adjacent places of business. Due to those actions and Zacharia Branch’s failure to comply with multiple verbal lawful commands, he was placed under arrest for misdemeanor Obstruction of LEO and received a citation for Obstructing Public Sidewalks.”

Hope it doesn't - and this is coming from someone who doesn't want us to draft him. If he didn't deserve to be arrested, his stock shouldn't have to fall as a result. Is the timing bad? Yes, it is, but literally any timing would be bad when it comes to being arrested and charged, not just before the draft.

I disagree. Interaction with law enforcement is the most common way Americans will experience the coercive authority of government. If none of us are willing to stand up for our freedoms, we will soon no longer have our freedoms. The founders understood that. I'll leave it there.

It's literally not that hard to spell his name correctly, and it's literally more respectful to spell someone's name correctly, especially on police reports where it's necessary, lest they end up citing someone who isn't even involved but has a similar name.

And I'm just saying that an Athens, Georgia police officer - in Athens, Georgia, where the Bulldogs play, where the team is followed religiously by the vast majority of the people there, where Zachariah Branch is a member of the team, where he's going to be drafted in the first three rounds - couldn't even spell his first name right. Yep. Read it before I commented. The officer's explanation is exactly why I think it's so ridiculous. And I didn't miss the officer intentionally using vague statutory language when describing what Branch allegedly did wrong. You're jumping to conclusions based on that vague language.

No, it's not necessary to smirk. OTOH, I'm actually a respect-authority-and-comply kind of person, but is it really necessary to arrest someone because they're smirking? I'm more concerned about that overreach than I am with a guy being a bit of a punk.
