When I was in the Army in Germany back in 1988-1991 I would call my best friend once a week to get updates via "The Sporting News" I also would watch some show from ESPN "So and so's, sporting machine" on Armed Forces Ratio and TV. (AFRTS) The internet is so amazing and we all take it for granted now.

Times Standard, San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today and the LA Times when I could get it. 3-4 newspapers a day. Read all the transactions and lines from NFL, MLB and NBA. It was a LOT of reading.
Don't do it these days. But there are things I miss. The non sports stories you would just happen on.
Tom Sinestras "Outdoor" type articles in the Chronicle were interesting. You get to see a lot of good writers reading that many papers a day.
Lowel Conn was a a hole at times, interesting too.

Newspapers? Is that the stuff I start my charcoal with? Sometimes I have to ask my neighbors to save some for me.

Idaho State Journal and local sports news at the end of the news in the 1960's.
Probably the best way though was to watch football games each Sunday, and see what they said about the Rams.
