When we traded up for Goff, it was essentially Fisher going "all in" with what cards already in his hand - and it turned out that we all thought might be a full house or a flush was just a pair of 3s..
But specifically what's gone wrong?
Brockers - great pick
Quick - terrible pick
Pead - worst pick
Jenkins - great pick - no longer with team
TruJo - great pick
Chris Givens - bad pick
Rok Watkins - bad pick
GZ - good pick
Aaron Brown - 7th round pick, but still not good
Tavon Austin - average pick - good player, not used effectively so average pick for the Rams
Ogletree - great pick
TJ McDonald - good pick
Stedman Bailey - terrible pick
Barrett Jones - terrible pick
Brandon McGee - bad pick
Zac Stacy - bad pick
Greg Robinson - terrible pick
Aaron Donald - best pick
Lamarcus Joyner - average pick
Tre Mason - terrible pick
Mo Alexander - good pick
EJ Gaines - good pick
Rest of this class - 6th and 7th round picks, not good but Bryant and Rhaney stayed on the team for a bit
Todd Gurley - great pick
Rob Havenstein - average pick
Jamon Brown - average pick
Sean Mannion - bad pick
Andrew Donnal - average pick
Bud Sasser - bad pick
Cody Whichman - average pick
Bryce Hager - average pick
Ifedi - 7th round
Not counting this most recent class for obvious reasons. I fear we overvalue some of our players, so I tried to be objective - in rounds 1-3 for the first 4 drafts of this regime, our rate at making above average draft choices is 9/17 - now, that's just rating how good of picks they were in hindsight - of that group we only have around 5 players that are above average NFL starters.
What's worse is that after days 1 and 2 of the draft, Fisher and Snead fall off a cliff. Gaines and Alexander are the only decent players that we've acquired on day 3 of the draft under Fisher (not counting the kicker) - with Donnal and Wichman having the potential to add to that group.
But - some GMs can have these type of numbers and still be successful - what really hurts were the terrible picks on days 1 and 2 - Bailey/Mason/Pead/Quick/Robinson - this kind of draft capital wasted would get most coach/GM combos fired, but the Rams acquired so much draft capital that it's gone under the radar. Then to compound issues - we somehow were unable to keep Jenkins, despite these failures - so we lost what was probably the 3rd best player this regime drafted. Also disturbing is the startling lack of success in the 2nd and 3rd rounds - of the 3 2nd round picks from the 2012 draft, two are off the team and the other is Brian Quick. Ouch.
It happens to every fan base - we overrate our own players. But the harsh truth is, Snisher has not done a good enough job at drafting as well as coaching.
