A certain type of bumble bee actually builds their hives under ground. These bees are transient and will move on after one or two life cycles. I get them here on the ranch all the time. The bees are very docile and not very aggressive unless you expose the hive.

They look like white faced hornets.. Nasty fookers... But I have never heard of them building nest in the ground
