With sustained success and relevancy you’ve always got a chance to steal a Lombardi
Agreed. Especially when you have a head coach of McVay's caliber plus an elite QB.

We had a chance to "steal one" in the 70's and 80's and didn't until 99. I think I'd rather have the sure thing and maybe 5 years of suckage afterwards.
We had at least a couple stolen from us in the 70's. Freakish stuff like the Mud Bowl.

Of course, there is no "sure thing". There is a better chance of winning in 2022 with AD, and probably in 2023, depending on who the team loses because AD wanted a new contract despite having 3 years left on his current one.,

Against that is more money and draft picks which may or may not be useful.

The Rams will try to sign him - but it has to be an extension that treats both sides fairly.

Oh, he's getting over $26 million next year already, counting pro-rated
money he has already received.

Keep ATG, that's dumb to consider even trading him. He covers up the weaknesses of others on that line, LB core, and secondary over the years.

My only qualm I have with this post @Loyal is I think it's feasible to get two more SB titles before AD hangs them up! But they got to be damned quick. like 2 out of the next 3 years? What you think about the possibility of that?
who is ATG?

I was just about to reply to @Loyal say that keeping Donald isn't a sure thing. We've had Donald for 8 years and have 1 super bowl in 2 appearances. Keeping him next year isn't a guaranty for a SB win.

Dickerson leaving was bad
Kurt Warner leaving was bad
Ike Bruce leaving was bad
Big Game Holt leaving was bad
SJax leaving was bad

I tired of seeing greats for this team finish their careers in other uniforms.

Pay the man
Orlando Pace was bad.....

We had QB issues. Can’t be weak there.

Right. Front office, HC, QB and a decent defense can get you through the lean times. Pittsburgh and Baltimore are good examples. Their scouting is good(like ours) but that isn’t everything.

The teams that bottom out every few years(like the Rams did for decades) suck because they don’t know where to put the money and blue chip players, and no consistency in the leadership positions. It’s like they live in the top 10-15 draft pick mindset.

It was just a scenario. I'm thinking 2023 us more likely, unless we threepeat!

Like your namesake, I want ATG to retire as a Ram. As for McVay, he said something like "If you stay, I'll stay" to AD.....Losing AD, might send Sean to ABC (or wherever)
Even worse, AD gets big deal, leaves in 3 yrs with McVay and the Rams are left with the fake yrs added to AD's contract and a resulting bad cap situation and a new coach.

We have a 2 or possibly 3 year window to repeat as Champs.
We do whatever it takes to lock him up, even if it means cap hell for a few years after that.

I love me some AD.

But I think it was Colin Cowherd who said it best - without McVay, Aaron Donald has never experienced a winning season in the NFL. If AD retires it might suck for this year - depends on the cap situation. We have almost all picks the next two years, which includes a 1st rounder in 2024 that we can trade. And with Gaines and A'Shawn, our DL itself is good. So could we find another EDGE rusher to trade for and throw a bunch of picks at someone? If so, we're still the NFC favorites IMO.

If AD retires and we can't replace him, our pass rush sinks to below average - but we would still win a lot of games with McVay and the offense.
