It's easy to take the simplistic view that Todd has been ineffective. However, when you are good enough to inspire NFL-level DC's to consistently stuff 8-9 guys in the box just to neutralize you, you are more than doing your job. It's on the other parts of the offense why the Express! is not rolling as freely as he should.
Flash back to 1999 and look at the stats for Marshall in the early games of that season. They are very similar to what we are seeing from Todd now. The DC's loaded up the box against the known threat, Marshall Faulk, and dared this unknown signal caller, someone named Warner, to beat their overloaded front D's. After Kurt consistently proved that he truly was a 'Special K,' torching opposing secondaries relentlessly with his talented fly guys, the DC's were forced to adjust to slow down the Horns' prolific scoring, and Marshall started rambling with big numbers.
Case needs all the help he can get. His receivers, especially the veterans, have to stop dropping balls. If the coaches see the defensive pressure is coming consistently from certain players or alignments, they may have to roll Case in the opposite direction to help improve his downfield vision. Play action with Todd is a given, but someone needs to emerge as some kind of goto guy as well. Otherwise, it may come down to this:
Johnny: "You know I'm ready to take over when you need a spark, Coach!"
Greg: "Damn showoff! Let me take over. I'll blast it in from 70 yards out!"
Johnny: "Like, who's a showoff? I have produced in the past. You haven't even matched the old FG distance record yet!"
Fish: "The tw of you idiots, knock it off already!, or I'll say 'the hell with it!' and send in the kid!"
