What happened to the Run game under McVay?

When our offense was truly formidable under Sean both the run and pass were a threat.

Even last year the run game was abysmal most of the time.

The decline in the ability to run the ball has gradually chipped away at the effectiveness of the offense over the years.

In my opinion its two things:

1 - Sean McVay's offensive scheme is built off of finesse, manipulation and speed. His offensive line has to block at a high level to accomplish that. They are not a bull rush you off the line of scrimmage type of Oline. Some of the most important blocking is done by WRs and TEs. (We actually have some great blocking WRs and a very below average blocking set of TEs).

2 - We do not draft or sign FA running backs much other than ones who can block and catch out of the backfield.

This is my favorite answer. Athletic linemen are so hard to find.

In prime Todd Gurley, 4 years younger Whit and an offense that had imagination.
Then? teams learned to stack the box against, Gurley turned to dust, Stafford pulled a few miracles out of his ass, and those miracles disguised how ineffective the offense had become
McVay's biggest criticism in Washington was how poorly his run game was, that he went away from it too early.

Either it’s:

the lack of high picks to put a few key stars in place in the line.

How they evaluate their linemen and what traits they favor

The run scheme.

Or a combination of the three. Of course the this year injuryies have compounded things but the run game has not been impressive since prime Gurley, especially considering that’s what McVay’s offense is supposed to be reliant on.

We are dependent on an above-average back, we don't scheme a good run game that average backs can excel in unless the passing game is above average. We have a convergence of worst-case scenarios this year

The line can't block and our best RB is average if that. Where McVay and Snead went wrong was thinking this line was good enough. I know the injuries wreaked havoc. But the starting lineup going into the season was not going to be that good anyway.

They have two choices. Blow it all up and start the 3 year rebuild. Or upgrade the OL and RB positions in the spring. A 3 year rebuild would be wasting guys like Stafford and Donald who only have a few years left. And Kupp who will be 30 next season.

They need guys who are not injury prone and have experience. They don't have to have an all star lineup. As bad as the line is now how hard would it be to upgrade.

Then there is one thing that could be something we can't fix. What if McVay is a one trick pony and can't evolve with the ever changing defenses in the NFL? If that is the case then we're in for some disappointing times. Stan Kroenke has a history of being more patient with his coaches than most owners.
