Lol - I say draft the kicker from Michigan. No Brainer if he is there with a 6th rd pick?
Jake Moody is the only rookie kicker I like, so if the Rams ended up with him, that would be fine, but I believe they are also going to draft a rookie punter (hopefully Michael Turk of Oklahoma) and IMO, I would rather have one veteran with one rookie instead of two rookies although the Rams did pull that off back in 2012.

In a vacuum, signing him is a no brainer. But with our cap problems it becomes an issue. What if signing him means Jalen is gone? Or Gaines or an OL or Edge. With our cap problems, every hole plug has a consequence somewhere else. It’s a tough decision to say the least. Hopefully Gay signs a LT deal that lowers his cap (at least for 2023-2024).

I think we all love Matt Gay. If it was me I would offer him the same but with incentives. There are a lot of great kickers out there and my guess cost versus production can be found way cheaper or even better in the draft for an eighth of Gays salary.

Draft a punter ? Yeah - Ray Guy.Even Johnny Hecker wasn’t drafted.Like I said they traded to move up using a backup punter.
The Rams last season then moved on from Johnny & had 2 punters in camp.
The Rams(Les Snead) drafted Greg the leg from like Western Texas(Michigan?). Johnny(& Jones) were like the highest paid punters when they left The Rams. So I won’t say The Rams don’t pay or like punters.
—Point being in general a FG is a heck of a lot more important than a Punter. To have a solid FG Kicker under contract for 4 season would seem financially the best way to do business.

The fact Les Snead WASTED a draft pick on Salma salma bologna & Sean Mcvay started him seems like a lot WORSE than what I think is BEST!!
My guess(hope) is they learned a lesson & over paying for Matt Gay wouldn’t be bad if The Rams drafted right & stood with not making so many mistakes.(I say that as I would have put this team together better) ,which is a JOKE for me saying or thinking that. The Rams do business is a certain way & staying consistent on what I believe they will or should do based on The INFO.

He is a "younger" pro-bowl kicker. Sign him.

If we can't afford that then we are in big trouble.

Should have kept Dicker the Kick on his rookie deal.

Give Gay a nice long-term 4-5 year deal to save cap space early.

LA Rams Qualifying Tender Offer for K Matt Gay should ensure 2022 return

The LA Rams have a little bit of time remaining, but have quite a stack of items to resolve before the 1:00 pm PDT deadline on March 16, 2022, arrives. At that time, the Rams will need to have cleared enough salary cap space to eliminate their current deficit, free up enough money to pay for any intended outstanding contracts to extend players, and have enough money to cover any Qualifying Tender Offers.
Qualifying Tender Offers are those one-year contracts that can be submitted to any team Restricted Free Agent (RFA) to lock in certain types of protections. With. that in mind, the LA Rams have extended their first Qualifying Tender Offer to RFA kicker Matt Gay. That offer is a one-year contract for a sum of $2.54 million

With that offer on the table, the LA Rams will automatically lock in several layers of protection. The first, and perhaps most important, is their Right-of-First-Refusal. With that in place, the Rams have the right to match any offer made to Matt Gay. If they choose to match the offer, Gay will play for the LA Rams under the terms of that new contract.

However, the Rams may not be able to or will choose not to match that offer. Then, the second layer of protection. Any team that signs Matt Gay away from the Rams must surrender a draft pick to the Rams. In the case of this Tender, that would be the round of the draft pick originally used to draft Gay or a fifth-round draft pick.

The Rams had used a First-Round RFA tender to extend DB Darious Williams in 2021. While more expensive, it would ensure that the Rams would recoup a first-round draft pick if any team successfully signed him away from the Rams.
The LA Rams have two ERFA players remaining: QB John Wolford and ILB Travin Howard. The Rams need only offer minimally qualified Tenders to ensure both players return for 2022. The fact that the LA Rams are addressing Qualifying Tender Offers is a good sign. The LA Rams must have the money upfront to make Tender offers.

So now, we wait once more. It’s kind of what we do when the LA Rams are in the NFL Free Agency market.

Currently Matt Gay counts about $2.5M against the cap and that is projected to double to $5.1M as he enters free agency.

With the cap maneuvers we need to make, and the desire to add a FA or two… can we afford a premium kicker salary?

But can we afford Cairo Santos and others where we are squeezing out butts just on extra points? Never mind even trying 50+ yard field goals.

I don't think there are 30+ good kickers “out there”.

Having a guy who is money from 50+ and in over 90% of the time is something winning franchises don’t quibble over.

We saw what happened in between Legatron and Gay, let’s not go through that again.

If we can't afford that then we are in big trouble.

Letting him walk just creates another hole.
He would be the cheapest, but most effective FA the Rams could re-sign.
He can literally win games for us!

As much as we would like to retain several FAs, we can’t just let somebody go because we can’t sign others.

We just assume we can find a serviceable one somewhere, remember the kicker hell we were in before Gay? If there’s a way I’d say bring him back.

If they don't extend him, they're absolute idiots. Takes forever to find a good kicker.

Don't want to go through the shit we went through after letting GZ go.

If he’s not facing multiple surgeries like Zuerlien then extend him. It would be rather Matt Gay if they didn’t. ( @Loyal ).
