I got a lot of respect for Cards fans. They are still recently removed from tons of losing and I get why they're paranoid. Felt that way myself at first as McVay pulled us out of the shite.
Should be a good divisional game. Think Zona is gonna get two or three TDs on our defense due to that edge threat their QB brings but the Rams should be able to handle business because I think we're gonna run the ball well and Akers will have a coming out party.
I have a co-worker friend from Cleveland who is a diehard Browns fan. As a diehard Horns fan I respected his stance completely since so many football "fans" are of the fair weather variety. The Cards are essentially where the Browns were a year or two ago where they are accumulating the necessary talent to win but still lack an essential ingredient, perhaps the most essential ingredient to winning. What I pointed out to my Browns fan friend also applies to the Cards scenario:
they have to shed the loser mentality by learning how to win, Losers expect to lose and tend to screw up with bonehead plays in close contests when the game is on the line. Winning teams expect to win and step up in crunch time.
The Horns still have that edge somewhat due to Sean's calming presence, even with an OL disrupted by key injuries last year we still posted a 9-7 ledger while enduring the worst season under the McVay administration. In this transitional season, we have one huge OL injury; we are assimilating very young promising talent in key positions, but we have seen enough to KNOW we are capable of a deep playoff run as long as the essential team elements come together NOW with solid focus AND execution.
On the offensive front, Van Jefferson has yet to truly break out toward realizing his full potential. Cam Akers freak early season injury where he fell awkwardly on the pigskin and separated cartilage served to retard his growth as a complete runner with respect to carries, receptions, AND blocking. Cam may very well be the closest player we have to primetime Todd Gurley when his whole game comes together. Joe Noteboom still needs to make serious inroads towards realizing his full potential as a run blocker to become a truly credible backup to our injured OL leader. Jared needs to stabilize his roller coaster seasonal performance and become primetime Jared once more. With positive improvements from these elements and others, this offense can emerge as a dominating force in this late season and in the playoffs. It could help to obtain a tough, football smart, stretch the field wideout who can stretch the opposing defense vertically, but that is a 2021 & beyond issue.
The defensive side has seen DC Brandon Staley emerge as Sean's defensive-minded twin. Rookie S Jordan Fuller has shown the potential to become our top overall safety. Leonard "Pretty Boy" Floyd is rounding into shape as an effective edge rusher. A'Shawn "ARob" Robinson's dominating presence will only get bigger as he continues to round into game shape in these late season games. Darius Williams has become the successful foil to Jalen's shut down CB role. Micah's injury was an unfortunate setback, but one that can be overcome with more cohesive team play.
Everyone! benefits by having super disruptive Aaron leading the team with his superb play - even with all the uncalled holds.
Johnny is still Johnny; Jake McQuaide is still the Incredible Invisible long snapper par excellence, and we may have at least a temporary answer at kicker in Matt Gay. Last week's heartbreaker loss to our bitterest rival will hopefully serve as the galvanizing stimulus for the whole team to truly play for each other for ultimate team success.
