Sure seems like that's the choice they made from all the talk. I don't dislike it

I think we're past that. Can we PLEASE not relitigate that? It's never coming back...never... not for any sports team in the next hundred years AT LEAST.

So please, pretty please to white baby Jesus, for the love of football, can we NOT start up (or restart in this case) yet another contentious subject? Especially as we're on the verge of a massively important game against the hated 9ers and then we're into the playoffs!

Also, Washington Admirals is a really shit name, worthy of the shit field and an even shittier owner. That name might make sense if they were based in San Diego or Hawaii, but Washington? Uch...

There are so many amazing names that would really befit them, the location and the fan base, but based on the list released by them with the 3 finalists in August of this past year, Admirals isn't even on that list...

So is it Armada?

It won't be RedWolves or any wolves derivative as primarily the concern of Snyder is to copyright the shit out of whatever name they're using and enforce it like a MFer. That de facto removes Hogs or any variation including RedHogs which was a fan favorite. The first few years, I expect them to be significantly worse than Disney with enforcement if that's possible. (Disney's apparently so virulently against infringement of any kind that a running joke is the way to prevent revenge porn is to have a Disney movie playing in the background and it will never stay up more than a day on the internet)

That likely puts Washington Football Team out of reach as well as they knew going in that they couldn't copyright such a generic name.

Armada is the name of a Nissan SUV which makes it unlikely... There's already gear out there with Armada on it and Nissan was there first by about a decade.

Admirals has been done before, but per multiple outlets and the WFT apparently stepping on their own announcement made a WashingtonAdmirals.com and redirected it to the WFT website. There's a Quidditch team in Washington named the Washington Admirals and it's possible that it's a hoax, but Boomer Esiason apparently has said it's the Admirals per that bastion of integrity, the New York Post (not that any paper in NY can claim that title, but that's for another forum)

But for a game on the ground that's transitioned to the air... a naval mascot is... even as retired Navy... really lame.

They couldn't go with the Washington Bombers (for obvious reasons tho I like the sound of that), but they could have gone with something aerial like the Washington Interceptors or Warbirds, something ground based like the Washington Sentinels (unless they don't want to compete with an E-sports franchise) or even the Washington Capitols (which I can't imagine would be that hard to buy and has already been trademarked and copyrighted plenty)

But Washington Admirals? Okay, I guess. Maybe they should have asked the students of UC Santa Cruz... the Banana Slug was a stroke of genius and it's routinely considered one of the best mascots in collegiate sports if not all of sports.

As being Native American, I still with it was the Redskins.

I would go one further, personally, and call them the Washington Originals (O’s for short) and use a more flattering, proud, and iconic Native American figure to represent the franchise.

Unless we keep the Native Americans in the public mindset...

Surely a meeting between the two sides could come up with something similar.

Good or bad, I'm one who believes in preserving our history—not eradicating it.

"Redskin" was originally a Native American term translated into French, then into English, in the 18th century. It was popularized by James Fenimore Cooper in his early 19th century novels. It was only later that it became regarded by some as a term of derision.

Oxford English Dictionary: redskin

Etymology:
< red adj. + skin n. In sense 1 after Mississippi Valley French Peau Rouge (c1769 in the passage translated in quot. c1769), itself apparently after Illinois *e·rante·wiroki·ta American Indian, lit. ‘person with red skin’ (compare nitarante·wiroki I am red, lit. ‘I have red skin’ (a1720 as nitaranteȣirouki)) and similar expressions in other American Indian languages of the region.
With quot. 1815 at sense 1 compare (in the native language of the speaker) Meskwaki e·sa·winameška·ta American Indian, lit. ‘person who has brown skin’ (high-register, rare), †me·škwinameška·ta in the same sense, lit. ‘person who has red skin’, also wa·peškinameška·ta white person, lit. ‘person who has white skin’. The published speech apparently inspired J. F. Cooper, who popularized the term (compare quot. 1823). For further details compare I. Goddard's discussion in European Review of Native American Studies 19 (2005) 1-20.

Not to get political but any name they choose, there’s bound to be an uproar. I can promise no matter how good the intentions, there will be people who are offended. And frankly, we can’t pander to them anymore. And to be clear, I’m not advocating for them to go back to their original name - I’m just saying no matter what, someone’s gonna be outraged.
