... Goff hasn’t had too many games where he had all day in the pocket yet missed a ton of wide-open throws.

As for Kupp, it’s pretty rare that he’ll drop two huge passes in one game.

I’m sure Goff and Kupp are pissed at themselves and will bounce back.
To your point, Goff has been quoted as saying that was his worst game he's ever played and doesn't expect to ever play that badly the rest of his career. So you ain't just making this up!

Monday night game at our house........this time with a roof! I think the outside night games, the ball gets a little slick and fumble fingers abound on this Rams team (Atlanta playoff game at Coliseum was brutal). Maybe that had something to do with the Kupp drops at Santa Clara. I have a good feeling about this coming game. Rams back on track!

It’s almost like this was a Twilight Zone game. Almost everything was abnormal and with a bizarre twist.

Some things I didn’t recognize last night...

Jared Goff. Who was that guy impersonating my QB?
AD. When was the last time you saw AD virtually erased?
Staley’s first half D. 49ers were running and passing at will.
McVay’s game prep. Gawd, it seemed like they gameplanned for a different team other than the 49ers.
Who the heck was that guy wearing #10 and pretending to be Kupp?

Those were some of the things I couldn’t recognize. Here are a few other thoughts that have seeped in since last nights debacle:

Maybe the Rams aren’t as good as I had thought. It hurts to type those words but I now have reasons to doubt my previous assessments.
Both McVay and Staley got schooled last night and on a national stage, at that. Both coaches need to take a hard look at their scheming and playcalling.
Playing an NFC West team sure is different than playing an NFC East team, huh?
Shanny currently owns McVay. Three in a row is not a coincidence.
For a crippled team, the 49ers looked pretty danged good, don’t you think? Makes the loss even more excruciating.
We have a problem at edge opposite Floyd. I watched Ebu, Hollins, Lewis, and Polite rotate there last night and NONE were effective. I’m on record as saying that this was our Achilles heel and might prevent a SB run.
Sloppy tackling will kill even the best schemed D’s and the Rams tackling was sloppy last night. I don’t even want to know the yards after contact figures.
Where was the ‘want to’ on either O or on D last night? I mean, this WAS a critical division game, right? This is the most unforgivable thing about last night to me.
I’m beginning to wonder whether ILB should be a high draft or FA priority next offseason. Feast or famine with Kiser and Young, dammit!
Rapp seems to be playing out of position at deep safety. Did Burgess run over Staley’s dog? Why else not give him a chance?
Broken record, I know, but why is Sloman still on this roster? Seriously.
Webster has looked great on returns for 2 games, so WTF is McVay still using Kupp back there? Makes zero sense and is so Un-McVay like.

There were a few bright spots last night but it’s a very short list, indeed.

Hendy played well.
OL did it’s job.
TE’s did their job, too.
Floyd had a pretty good game.

Umm, sadly, that’s about it. Sorry.

Rams have a lot of work to do before the 5-1 Bears come to town. Gulp...
I posted this in the Bears thread 43 but for some reason our team is lights out in the second half. For some reason we come out soft in the first half. I don't get it either. Sean has to get us ready to go at the snap, not in the second half. Same with Staley.

What’s your point?

Yeah, Goff played worse during his miserable rookie year under Fisher. But since he’s been with McVay, Goff hasn’t had too many games where he had all day in the pocket yet missed a ton of wide-open throws.

As for Kupp, it’s pretty rare that he’ll drop two huge passes in one game.

I’m sure Goff and Kupp are pissed at themselves and will bounce back.
My point? It’s an overreaction to call it a career worst and I laughed.

Sounds like a lot of excuse making to me. These guys are professional athletes that are getting paid very well, I think they would be the first to admit that they need to be able to handle these circumstances. If you think that was a good game plan and a good coaching job, you don't know very much about the game. These coaches would be the first to tell you they have got to do better. When someone is having a bad game change things up and go to something else. don't keep trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.

If the plays were there to be made, it's not on the coaches. The players have to execute. The slow start I'm fine blaming the coaches for, but at the end of the day, if Goff and Kupp execute, we win.

Those aren't excuses - they both missed plays they normally make and I'm not going to put that on the coaches

Gotta remember that the 49ers offense only went cold AFTER Mostert got hurt. It shouldnt have taken a Journeyman RB's injury for the Defense to have gotten in control.

That's one way to look at it. Another is that we made halftime adjustments and the players got chewed out and they played better.

Well, in fairness I called it a “near” career worst. No, I don’t think it was Goff’s worst game ever, but it would probably make the list of games he’d rank near the bottom.

Goff himself said, “It was just some uncharacteristic stuff for me, missing guys open there early. It’s something that I’ve never done in my life and don’t expect to ever repeat.“

And yeah, same thing for Kupp, I bet he’s beating himself up over those two drops.

Main thing is... I am very far from saying “Get rid of the bum!”. Quite the opposite. I have a ton of respect for the ability and professionalism of both Goff and Kupp, and I’m critical of their play on Sunday only because it seems so unusual for these guys to make unforced mistakes.

Cheers

I watched the game again tonight & deleted-

Goff missed Kupp twice early, had a couple throw-aways because no one was open...a weird throw to GE.

But man, Goff can make that deep out throw beautifully. He threw some passes in the 2nd and 3rd quarters that were pinpoint.

First throw, 18 yard out to Woods...no one throws it better.

We were outcoached! The Niners knew our LBs are weak in zone coverage and took advantage. Why else was Jimmy G like 12/14 to start with all of his passed <10 yrds or behind the LOS? That ball was coming out quick...he knew where to throw it! Does Staley call the same zone coverage every play?

On the flip side, the 9ers were daring us to throw it deep. They were sitting on all of our short routes. That's how we should have been playing them! Also, outside of Ramsey, we have no one that can guard George Kittle.

Agreed, man. And I’m happy to acknowledge Goff had some great throws in this game. Two off the top of my head— nice throw (and even better catch) to Woods for TD... and also a perfect strike to Kupp for what should’ve been a TD.

Just weird how Goff had so many misses early on.

Couple of things I couldn't figure out.

1) They instituted a special bootleg defense because we smoked them with this last time. We don't run it AT ALL? We just assume they got this covered now? I mean, I bet that Warner dude flying around might have been neutralized if he was burned a few times.
2) Then again, we continually gashed them with Hendo. Why get cute? That play at the goal line was only stopped by amazing 9er defensive play. Just give it to him again take your chances (up the middle, or off-tackle). If they stop it, they have to work their way out. That pass call was Carroll-level brain fart overthinking of the highest order.
3) Why didn't they pressure more? I know they burned us on one, but that was because of poor technique by the guy right in Crap's face. Make him do that repeatedly and we win by 35.

Just confused and disappointed.

Thank God the Dodgers treated the Braves like the Falcons and came back from oblivion! Thank God we're not ATLANTA!!!

F” the Dodgers & why put God into it. I would have rather The Rams lose to SF than watching them.

Henderson should have been given the ball. I was told though Copper Kupp dropped the TD?? My point though about running it. Mcvay went for it on 4th. 3 downs to run it instructions get & Henderson just brought it to the 1 yrd line.

Cooper Kupp should not be the Punt Returner. I hate seeing it.

Kupp and Woods were bracketed on most every play.

Reynolds, Everett and Higbee were often open underneath.

Loved the run game gashing the whiners in the 2nd half.

They‘re a 2nd half defense...all the whiner bullshit offense stopped...

But why are they such a 2nd half defense?

They have played so poorly in the first half and it appears that it takes an entire half before Staley starts to make adjustment.

5 or 6 throws out of 38 + Reynolds ran the wrong route twice

Kupp with 4-5 drops and PBU’s

Weird ass night :hiding:

I literally cringe every time I see him back there. It just makes zero sense to me....why would you put your highly paid, highly utilized, yet not particularly quick or fast WR back there to possibly get his head taken off??? Webster has proven better at kick return duties and would be far less of a casualty for our season if God forbid he were to go down.

I'm not so worried about Goff and the offense. I think they will be fine for the most part this season. They will have their moments where they struggle. But overall I think they will be just fine. Better than last season.

I am worried about the defense though. Everyone knew the 49ers were not gonna put too much on their QB. Most passes were the short, safe type of throws designed to protect a struggling QB. It was like a coach calling everything conservative for a new QB. Shoulda been easy to defend. Rams defense never adjusted. And they sure missed a lot of tackles. Missed tackles were not something new either. That is a concern.
