Every time I hear these comments on McVay and his impending no-miss media career, I'm reminded how hearing his raspy voice and vague coachspeak in his press conferences is worse to me than fingernails on the chalkboard.

Am I alone in thinking his success is not a slam dunk?
I'm not with you on that, I think he'd do great at it especially in the studio.

If somehow Jim Schwartz shakes loose, I’d be great with that

He's been underrated for a while I think. Felt he deserved a HC look after his Super Bowl with the Eagles but he's never been a guy owners seem to like. Must be a shitty interview but in some ways that makes him an ideal DC. Guy you can park in the role and he'll get the most from your talent.

I don't think he's the best in the league or anything. But I've always liked how he calls it.

I'm not sure it would matter how good he is. He'll get a brink truck of money when he signs the paper, before he ever says a word on the broadcast.

Also, I don't believe he's leaving coaching right now.

Exactly. Networks love him and have already offered him big money. Also he's one of those guys who is so good at guarding what he says that I'd imagine he'd be somewhat impartial in his analysis and he's always up on the trends.

Why would anyone want Staley as a DC at this point? His Chargers units have been mediocre to bad.
Maybe he was ahead of the curve on the new-era of coverages.. and that helped the Rams have an incredible year on D.

But.. man.. his defenses on the Chargers have just NOT been good.

Perhaps staley is not immune to the “Donald” effect.

That 2020 defense benefited from AD99 having a DPOY season.
I know I’m biased (ok, extremely), but the destructive influence an IDL has over an Edge rusher if he (Donald) is having a season like that is more impactful.

Okay.. but I'd put that as the difference between a good and great defense.

His Chargers defenses aren't even good.

That defense was stacked with an AD in his prime and several significant role players. That secondary was legit stellar.

For the people who say they'd elevate Henderson to DC... why? What has he shown that makes you think he'd be a good DC?

Guys run through walls for him. That's really the case for him. And it's no small thing to have that as a coach.

Modern defenses seem to require good knowledge of coverages, which is where I'd be unsure about Henderson. Can he get to that point where he doesn't require a top secondary coach in order to field a top unit. No idea and I think that works against him getting the DC gig. But he deserves the shot solely based on the consistent production he squeezes from his talent group.

Terrell Lewis couldn't even run on turf for him.

But I kid... sorta.

Yeah, I just haven't seen anything from him that would indicate he can put a defensive gameplan together, marry pass rush and coverage or call plays. And I suspect that if he was on track to be a coordinator, some movement would have already happened in his 7 years in the league but could be wrong.

I'd give some posters right nut get Evero back. Dude put together an epic D last year in Denver and while he's struggling with Panther's it's really him keeping them in games.

Don't forget Aubry Pleasant. He runs our coverage gameplanning, which was pretty damn good before Kendrick pulled his BS stunt and inserted his head firmly in his ass. Prior to the last few games they were definitely playing over their heads.

Going forward it's a good sched too. So there's room for a bit of a run, and from there we'll see. If by some miracle Morris gets a HC gig then we're gonna need to decide between Pleasant and Henderson because I'd think one of those two would be Morris' DC.

Or, we go with the chaotic option. Morris does get a HC job, and Staley does get canned...and then Morris hires him as his DC.

Maybe we ought to hire Josh McDaniels as DC. He's made defenses look really good!

Former coordinators who get axed as shitty head coaches tend to do very well on the rebound. So yeah I'd think either of those guys would be good hires.

Problem for McDaniels is he runs the Erhardt-Perkins though so he'll end up with the Belicheat crowd.

Most definitely. I didn’t mean to imply that defense was JUST AD and 10 other guys. It was very talented, but having 99 in the thick of it made a significant impact that benefitted everyone else.
It always has.
