Wagner doesn’t cost us a comp pick
Correctomundo!Since Wagner was released, I don't believe his signing has any impact on the Compensatory-Pick-Formula.

Yeah we might have dodged a bullet there. I wanted Gilmore because I really don't like this corner depth chart. He would have given Morris a lot of leeway in scheme. But maybe the Colts get burned and we're thankful Irsay sent that team jet to get him.Signing Gilmore to that big of a deal comes with a lot of risk. The Colts were desperate for a good corner.
I don’t believe the Rams would be willing to risk that kind of money on a 33 year old corner who has had some recent injury history. If they had then Gilmore wouldn’t have been so easily wooed by Irsay and the Colts who didn’t even make the playoffs.
Yeah, the DB depth on this team is scary thin right now.Yeah we might have dodged a bullet there. I wanted Gilmore because I really don't like this corner depth chart. Rams should be able to find a corner in this draft. Maybe even an edge rusher too if things fall their way. I don't love where we're at with corner or edge but Rams are good at finding solutions and even getting lucky here and there too so got my fingers crossed.
What I'm guessing happens is they get Mathieu done who they can move around. Then they try to find a corner with some cover skills in the draft. That should set them up with flexibility in using Mathieu however Morris prefers. If they hit on the pick then they're in business. If not then they should still be better off with Mathieu added.
Another way they might go in the draft btw is one of the safety/corner hybrid types. They missed on Burgess in terms of thinking he could play slot for them. I don't think that's gonna happen. But that doesn't mean they can't hit on a guy like that and if they do then it's that Jimmy Ward effect where you can see him lock down the slot one down then on the next he's in a different role. Gonna use this next week to look at the safeties projected in that midround range, because I could see them going that route.
That is very interesting. If I had to guess prior to FA it would have been that Gilmore would make more. But I'm way more up to speed on Williams' warts than Gilmore's.DWill 3/30m 18m guaranteed.
Gilmore 2/23m 14m guaranteed.
Sounds like Rams were more than open to bringing Gilmore in but only for 1 year or at a market discount. I guess we’ll never know but the Rams will find a better option/deal to beef up CB.
Maybe but don't you see Callahan as mostly a Slot-CB; and therefore, not an ideal fit with the Rams who like to move Jalen Ramsey around for favorable match-ups depending upon the opponent?I still think we may be looking at Bryce Callahan plus a couple of draft picks.
A better slot corner allows us to use Ramsey as more of a man 2 man shut down type guy? That's what I read for him as a possibility.Maybe but don't you see Callahan as mostly a Slot-CB; and therefore, not an ideal fit with the Rams who like to move Jalen Ramsey around for favorable match-ups depending upon the opponent?
Maybe but perhaps the Rams prefer Ramsey inside against specific opponents or at certain times; and a pure-slot-CB could make that more difficult.A better slot corner allows us to use Ramsey as more of a man 2 man shut down type guy? That's what I read for him as a possibility.
We can still always move them around just because Callahan is better at one thing doesn't mean he can't manage the other. And it's also possible that we used him in the slot as much as we did because after NRC we really didn't have a good slot corner. Another reason Jrry and I and a few others are fans of drafting Marcus Jones from Houston if he's available for us. Great returner and a damn good slot corner. He might be gone before us though.Maybe but perhaps the Rams prefer Ramsey inside against specific opponents or at certain times; and a pure-slot-CB could make that more difficult.
My initial point (worded as a question) was whether Callahan was primarily a slot; and, therefore, maybe not an ideal fit. As to whether the Rams used Ramsey inside because they weren't happy with the options ... I totally get you and yes I think Callahan is both good and a good fit for the Rams. I also don't think it's black and white that the Rams want or need Ramsey in the star role. I think it was partially due to need brought on by a lack of a good slot corner. My initial point (worded as a question) was whether Callahan was primarily a slot; and, therefore, maybe not an ideal fit. However, I think the Star-role that Ramsey has played is about much more than merely playing him inside against an opponent's slot-receiver. It has been about moving him around to make Ramsey a key player that offenses must deal with rather than simply avoiding him the way stud-CBs are often not thrown-against. Inside, Ramsey has covered TEs and backs, blitzed and played a center-zone. Aside from his coverage skills, Ramsey's strong tackling is well utilized when he plays inside.
Not dissimilar to how the Rams move Donald around for preferable match-ups, and to make it more difficult for opposing offenses to game-plan. Would be easier if he was in the same spot play-in and play-out.
A pure-slot-CB could be a liability if forced to play outside when the Rams want Ramsey inside. Such a slot-CB could be removed from the field when Ramsey plays inside but that's not a good option ... still need two other CBs on the field.
Again, just raising the question of whether Callahan ... a good corner ... is also a good-fit for the Rams.
My awareness of him is kind of general as he has never played on a team I closely follow. I thought of Callahan as mostly a slot-CB but that may not be the case. Thus my initial post.
