Yeah that's the sad part is this definitely points towards Donald walking away after the contract is up. Let's relish it now but I'll be sad as fuck when it happens.

It will definitely be a bummer, but Father Time is undefeated. When it does happen, I hope he retires for good, because I would much rather see him retire from us than to go somewhere else, even if he's a diminished AD.

Now finish Kupp and get OBJ on board.

There are two void years at the end of the contract. Numbers are not released yet, but I'm guessing that it is how most of the $40m raise will be paid.
I’m glad they started using that gimmick to keep the window open.

No dead money this year.. so there’s cash to do this in creative ways to not kill cap.
Who knows.. his cap # may be smaller next year lol.

Rams, Aaron Donald work out a massive new deal

The contract, per a source with knowledge of the terms, has no new years. Instead, the existing deal was torn up, and it was replaced by a new contract.

He’ll get $95 million over the next three years. He’s getting, a literally, a $40 million raise.

The contract includes a pair of voidable years. The void kicks in on the final day of the 2024 league year. Which means that the Rams won’t be able to tag him for 2025. Instead, he’ll become a free agent if he wants to keep playing.

He gets $65 million over the next two years, with no offset on guarantees. It’s structured to let him retire after 2023 with no financial penalty. If decides to play in 2024, he’ll get another $30 million.

Here’s the breakdown of the deal:

1. Signing bonus: $25 million.

2. 2022 base salary: $1.5 million, fully guaranteed.

3. 2022 roster bonus: $5 million, fully guaranteed.

4. 2023 roster bonus: $15 million, fully guaranteed and due on second day of 2023 league year.

5. 2023 base salary: $13.5 million, guaranteed for injury at signing and fully guaranteed as of third day of 2023 league year.

6. 2024 roster bonus: $5 million, guaranteed for injury at signing. Fully guaranteed on third day of 2023 league year. With no forfeiture language.

7. 2024 base salary: $30 million, fully guaranteed as of the fifth day of the 2024 league year. It would be paid with $20 million as an option bonus and $10 million as base salary, for cap purposes.

The guarantees have no offset language.

The $95 million in case flow over three years surpasses the $92.3 million paid to Josh Allen and dwarfs the $63 million paid to Patrick Mahomes in the first three years of their respective contracts. It’s the biggest contract ever given to a non-quarterback, and only 11 quarterbacks rank ahead of him in average salary.

He’s the first non-quarterback to pass the $30 million per year threshold.

And it was all done with no new years. And the ability to retire after two years. And the ability, if he so chooses, to sign with any team he wants in 2025.

I wonder if the “I might retire” ploy would get me a big raise too. Of course, I can’t bench press a Buick and chase down a stampeding wildebeest like Donald, so…

So if I'm understanding it correctly it's almost like a year to year? He can retire after this upcoming year and then no cap issues. Course he leaves 30 million behind but either way it more than likely means we have 1-2 years of AD left?????

Glad this got done as soon as it did.

The pros and cons of his worth (by fans) was becoming a bit silly imo.

Now we don't have to read anymore posts from @Merlin and others about how Donald should be traded if he's going to gripe about his former contract numbers with 3 years left on it.

Donald is way more valuable than some Rams fans believe.

I get the cons but, but Donald just turned 31 not 35. He's not your normal 31-year-old human NFL athlete.

So glad this got done before July. Bring on the Cooper Kupp raise (and hopefully the OBJ signing after that)

By the way @Merlin, I'm just razzing you a little bit. I didn't agree with your take on Donald but I'm glad it turned out the way it did.

The Rams organization is top shelf, and I couldn't be happier today that the Donald contract/retirement hype was finally resolved.

No it's like I've been posting. The Rams wanted at least a 2 year commitment from him. The third year is an optional year for him. If he retires after two years, then if he decides to unretire at some point because of that extra year, the Rams own his rights.

Read we save $2.75mil this year. Creating more OBj cap space I hope!
100%. We knew the AD and Kupp deals would be structured in a way to create more immediate space. We're out here playing 4D chess while the other franchises wonder where the money comes from.

They added no years to his contract. In fact they gave him an out 1 year earlier than his deal before this.

Crazy contract. It remains to be seen how it affects the cap down the road. I love watching AD play on the Rams. I’m glad they got it done but does this mean Gaines and AShawn are goners next winter along with a few other starters?

It will be interesting to see how the Rams manage to continue to be a playoff team after this year. A lot of youngsters will have to develop quickly.
