Putting this up at @RhodyRams request. Definitely one of the biggest plays of the game. This one and the quick setup for the FG (as well as our kicker actually hitting it which was grand) got us 3 points before the half.

Situation:

Pre-snap Goff telling Brown where to line up (pretty common sight lol). In spite of his time in this offense the guy does not have mastery of it far from it in fact. Since we don't know how exactly things are drawn up and have to guess, this is my OPINION based on seeing play after play where he does shit that doesn't make sense but make up your own mind :beer2: :

Safety goes with him and Goff knows Bucs are in single-high and man:

Bucs backers move up and threaten double A gap blitz a beat later and Goff decides to make an adjustment (I presume this is where he checks into the tunnel screen). This is a really nice adjustment option for this look as there's potential for a big play if you spring it with one guy to beat:

Kupp relays to Woody that he's up:

Pre-snap with the routes/assignments they run. I have put Brown's in red since I think he's a dumbass :ROFLMAO::

At the snap one of the first critical defensive reads is 58. He's probably got a read that if the RT runs by him it's a screen and since a tunnel screen doesn't have a lot of space to work with if 58 sees it it's over pretty much. Good thing is he wants Goff's fruit cup and is about to blow right by. Screens are varied and chaotic so there's no telling on assignments but I presume Everett has Kupp's guy, the responsibility to seal him outside. Generally the OT takes the ILB but in this case since they came on the blitz he won't see him and will adjust and take the safety which is outstanding. Outstanding because the Rams will have 3 guys blocking 3 guys which is really a great look starting in space i.e. the runner has nobody to beat one on one:

As Goff turns there's some interesting things going on here. First off Blythe fails to get his guy in the kung-fu grip (interior hold) or position himself as a reach block to seal him. This means the ILB will crash down and may affect the play. Secondly Corbett lets his guy through without a rub which makes the QB telegraph the throw sooner, and which in turn can cue the OLB to reverse and help make a stop. But the good thing is 58 really wants some QB blood so he's slow to read it even though Goff looks ready to throw it:

Goff winds up and things look amazing. You have the safety with Hav bearing down. Everett in great position to seal off Kupp's guy. And Woody just has to get through the tunnel before Blythe's dude crashes down it's gonna be close. And Brown for some inexplicable reason is busy running his guy (who is still focused on him) across and into the play. You cannot convince me McVay is that stupid. So please don't try lol:

Woody hits it just in time. Look at all that green. This is a TD if not for Brown running his dude into the play:

Woody wants 7 he can smell that shit:

But the DB has the angle so now it's about the clock:

One dude not knowing his assignment cost us 4 points. This is the stuff I've been talking about (that I think mental errors are a big part of our probs), and it has to be driving McVay batshit crazy:

Brown’s pass pro and ability to get short yardage are the only reasons he is on this team. I take that back a bit. He is decent at catching the ball on screens.

Was this the only wide receiver screen or wide receiver handoff or outside run that worked all day? All I remember is thinking "why the fuck do the Rams continue to run or throw wide when the Bucs have basically their entire defense spread out across the line?" (see pictures above). Wouldn't an inside run go for long yardage if the Rams running back can break thru the first line of defense?

PS - Merlin... you should be a coach! Or at least a coordinator! Another great job with the pictures and analysis.

I was thinking the same thing. Those screens were driving me nuts!! The bucs had that shit on lock down. This one was great though, haha.

Brown missed that assignment for sure. But he gets most of his assignments right. This is what McVay means when he says he thinks this offense is close to its potential. It takes all 11 and several plays this year failed because of one mistake. That's the nature of the NFL. The best teams are consistent. I'd say our team is more consistent than most others but when McVay became more multiple in scheme, it challenged the players to process more information. But if they keep working at it, they may be ready by the playoffs to execute answers when the defense presents problems.

Appreciate the stills Merlin. What a great call by McVay and execution by Goff and Woods. Solid blocking too by Everett but there's such a small window to break that play open and Woods after the catch is such a monster. Risky going for the extra yards but our clock management was flawless on that drive. And those 3 points ended up being the difference in the game.

And all of the runs that the backs tried to take outside went for little to no gain. What ever happened to a quick handoff right up the middle? All I could think was Hendo or Aikers getting into the secondary and they were GONE!

Yeah you pretty much hit it on the head there with where I'm at. I'm very optimistic with this offense, particularly after the way Boom played (Whit's loss terrified me tbh). His pass pro was far better than I expected. If that continues I think this offense has a chance to be more of that top unit they've been by the end of the season just by virtue of these new pieces picking up the nuances and knowing the offense cold. It's gonna take some more time and hopefully they're at their best as they hit the playoffs. :beer2:
