The Chargers 2016 defense was in the middle of the pack. It ranked No. 16 overall in total team defense a year ago. Although the team didn’t struggle mightily, the Bolts 20th-ranked passing defense did give up 249 yards per game,
per ESPN.
In a league that is more pass-friendly than ever, having a solid pass defense is integral to a team’s success. The Bolts already have a solid cornerback tandem with veteran’s Casey Hayward and Jason Verrett.
Nevertheless, Telesco added some depth at cornerback with the fifth-round selection of Desmond King. The team did release veteran Brandon Flowers but are bringing back Trovon Reed, who made an immediate impact in the six games he played.
Although the team may feel comfortable with its arsenal of corners, the Bolts’ lack of experience at the cornerback position could affect them down the stretch in critical divisional games.
