Natrez Patrick in Matthews position until Clay can come back. Sit Ebu.
You need to understand positional roles before you say that. Patrick was an ILB at Georgia and is far too slow to play SAM LB in the NFL. He's undersized and slow simply put. Ebukam has outplayed Mathews. All you need to do is go back to this last game and watch both of them. Dak ran right around Mathews who's primary job was containment. That play showed why the Packers moved Mathew inside. The SAM LB primary role is contain, then coverage in the flats of TE and RB, and as an occasional blitzer. Mathews can't cover and is like Peters, he continually goes off book and freelances and is a lousy tackler as he repeatedly proved that game. Ebukam has repeatedly shown he's an impact player. Even the much ballyhooed Mathews cannot play SAM because he isn't versatile enough to do it. He showed it on Sunday.
Per TheRams.com regarding Ebukam:
"became the first player with a sack, interception, and multiple touchdowns in a single game since sacks became an official stat in 1982 in Week 11 win over Kansas City "
So this is the guy you want to replace with a too slow, undersized rookie?
SJD on the other hand missed multiple tackles, kept getting stoned or blowout in that same game. This guy is crap as a NT. He can't play one gap much less two. He's the defensive version of Blythe.
effectiveness is trending downward. Fowler & Ebukam are not a getting the job done
Huh?? Dante has 9 sacks!! Ebukam as an occasional blitzer having to play behind an overrated Mathews has another 3.5. If Mathews wasn't taking half of Samson's snaps he'd probably have almost as many as Dante in terms of sacks. The problem isn't the outside pass rush of these two but the lack of a bookend edge rusher opposite Fowler on a consistent basis. Why do you think I've been advocating either Ebukam, Ogbo, or even Mathews to play that opposite DE position and simply move Brockers inside to NT for the last two games because SJD has been terrible at NT.
They are soft in the middle against runs and you simply have to look at SJD to see why. Go ahead and watch him just in the first half this past Sunday. I counted 3-4 missed tackles just in the first half because the guy can't get off a block.....something I've been saying all season long.
