I like this from zn off another board.

All that's new here is that Jay Glazer answered a question in his mailbag last week by saying yeah the issues with Gurley's knee are real. But that's just his personal take, there's no new information.

(Glazer then makes the mistake of saying if TG's fine early in the season there's no concern...BUT if TG has some kind of underlying condition, no, being fine in week 1 tells you nothing. If he DOES have a condition, it might flare up at any time, like mid-season, or not at all this season, or twice like it did in 2018).

Anyway.

The writer of the article then just acts like Glazer revealed something new about what the Rams are thinking. No. Glazer did not REVEAL anything. He just offered his opinion that the arthritis speculation could be legit.

That's it, that's all that's new here. Jay Glazer chimes in with an opinion. Nothing else.

Of course, this is all conjecture on my part but It seems that they felt resting him or his knee would help him somehow.

Either that or they were resting him due to swelling in his knee and the swelling would go down because of the rest.

Don't go having a baby on me, I'm just throwing that out there.

As per usual, doubtful we see much of Gurley in the pre-season games. Seems we are not likely to form a more logical estimation or conclusion to this matter short of an announcement of some sort. The Rams are not going to give the Panthers a heads up on who to prepare for in the opening game of the season on Sept. 8. We will all draw upon opinions based on playing time in September, both his, Henderson's and to a lesser degree, Malcolm Brown's. If there truly is apprehension over Gurley's knee, it will be reflected on game day as the Rams will not risk his over-use.
Some are likely to consider Henderson an insurance policy, others will see him as that change of pace back we have been seeking for awhile now. We won't have many answers until we can observe their shared snap counts, whether the number is lopsided or more evenly divided, which is what i'm hoping for anyway so that we can preserve Gurley's longevity whatever his prognosis. We know what Gurley can do, Henderson should only make us better with his added dimension furthering McVay's options. We'll be fine whether Gurley & Henderson each pull down 12-15 rushes per game, or if Gurley gets back to 25-30 rushes per game, whatever is better for the health of the players and for the rams to succeed will work for me. IMO, those whom are more concerned over snap counts are likely fantasy football fanatics and not so much Rams fans. jmo.

I'm tired of all of the speculation. But I am truly scared !

I dont need to see him in preseason or running drills , but I would like a REAL statement about his recovery.

Rams clearly plan to reduce TG's carries through the season and keep him fresh. I think that is the direction all this is going.

Good thing is you can get RBs all over any year's draft. And the Rams just did exactly that. No reason for panic, just wait and see how all this plays out.

I've sat on this for a couple of months because its anecdotal as hell. I work at UCLA and have a co worker in the facilities and maintenance field that is cousins with Dominique Hatfield. Allegedly he was told that Gurley had some injection for his knee late in the year. Take it with a grain of salt, but there seems to be some issue with his knee. That's all I know. His reps in training camp will be interesting to monitor.

."I think the biggest test will be what happens early in the season," Glazer said in his weekly column in The Athletic. "If he runs and [the knee] doesn’t blow up and the Rams are able to use him as a workhorse, then a lot of those concerns will go away. If not, they’re going to have to get a little creative."

If he doesn't have a knee problem, he's fine. If he does have a knee problem, he's not fine. Genius! Why didn't I think of that?

The Rams have alternatives at the running back position. Brown and Henderson could make a nice one-two punch should Gurley have to sit. Something is up with TG's knee. Rams will be ready to deal with any setbacks. It really is a wait and see deal as we have no definitive details.

NFL Network’s Steve Wyche: “Absolutely not” any medical issues that will diminish Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley in 2019

Some very telling specific language from the Rams via Wyche today.

Per NFL Network’s Steve Wyche:

I was told by the [Los Angeles] Rams that after the season, after the Super Bowl, they came up with an offseason plan [for Rams RB Todd Gurley] that’s basically, “We’re going to do everything we’ve done in previous years except you are not going to be doing football work on the field during OTAs.”

Now I was told by the Rams and Travelle Gaines who trains a lot of NFL players including [New York Giants] running back Saquon Barkley and [Jacksonville Jaguars RB] Leonard Fournette that Gurley is in the Rams facility as [Rams Head Coach Sean] McVay said doing some strength and conditioning work, and then he works with Gaines several days a week doing strength and conditioning and agility work. The one thing that they are not doing is pounding-type drills such as running hills or doing work in the sand dunes of Southern California. Gaines, who has trained Gurley since his second season, said otherwise they’re not doing anything different.

The one change that Todd Gurley is going to make, and this is according to Travelle Gaines in conjunction with the Rams (there’s communication between both), is Todd Gurley’s goal is to play closer to 218 lbs. this season whereas last year he played closer to 224, 225.

They just said by lightening the load a little bit, they’re going to make him a little more agile, maybe make him even a little more dangerous in the passing game.

Gaines also said, “Is there any lingering effect from the ACL injury had when he was at the University of Georgia? Yes. That is common with all athletes, but it is not an every day thing. Now is there anything medical that the Rams or anyone is worrying about that’s going to diminish Todd Gurley? Absolutely not.”

This is simply a maintenance program. Something to take the load off so Todd Gurley can be better later in the season as opposed to maybe not having as much left.

Remember, last year was the most games Todd Gurley ever had to play, or the Rams had to play in Gurley’s tenure.

————————————————————————

Bear in mind it was Wyche who, back in February, passed along the Rams’ assessment of Gurley’s knee after the season that he had been dealing with a “wear and tear” issue.

While the Rams’ public statements and some media members’ muddling made things difficult to parse, I’ve contended since then that there’s no reason Gurley can’t be as physically ready for Week 1 in 2019 as he was for Week 1 of 2018. That being the case, there’s nothing really groundbreaking from Wyche’s reporting.

The real key, as many have noted several times, is that we won’t get any real clarity on Gurley’s availability or usage until we get to Week 1. Nothing from the offseason program or training camp or the preseason is going to give us any sincere lead on Gurley’s future.

If nothing else, at least we can rule out any medical emergency for JTG. Whether or not we can expect to see the same amount of Todd Gurley will have to wait until September.

I understand why the Rams lied throughout the playoffs about Gurley's status so as not to tip their hand, but I don't understand how it's four months later and we still don't know what's going on.

In all my years of following the Rams, I can never remember this much speculation and conjecture regarding the health of a player. Ever.

Really wish we could get a full, complete, honest answer, but I guess we'll have to accept it just won't happen.

I honestly think there's nothing wrong with Gurley other than a late season tweak that took some time to heal. I could obviously be wrong but why would they keep it such a secret in the offseason? there's really no need to do so. I think it's overblown media coverage and the Rams are eating it up.

You know, it's possible that the answers we are getting are the truth. We got a yes for an answer on if there are lingering issues with the knee. So they are changing up his routine to hopefully keep him healthy thru the season. What more do you need to know. I mean, besides giving us a crystal ball reading that tells us how well he will play and how long he will last.
