Todd Gurley's Knee Injury Reportedly a Major Concern for Rams Moving Forward
by Austin Pert

The decline in snaps and production late last season for Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley was both a surprise and point of confusion for many, as there appeared to be no sign of any injury suffered or any reported ailments from the running back. But according to Fox Sports NFL insider Jay Glazer, Gurley's knee is a source of long term concern for his franchise.

UPDATE: Rams RB Todd Gurley’s knee issue is a real concern for him and the team, per Jay Glazer.

Gurley, 24, started with his knee issues at Georgia when he suffered an ACL tear in his left knee.

Since then,… https://t.co/xN9WkSjbmy

According to the report, Gurley has developed arthritis in his left knee, just one of the many issues he's had with the knee since suffering a torn ACL during his junior season at the University of Georgia in 2014.

Reoccurring swelling of his knee is the biggest concern in the medium-to-long-term future, having been a cause for his reduction of carries a season ago."I think the biggest test will be what happens early in the season," Glazer said in his weekly column in The Athletic. "If he runs and [the knee] doesn’t blow up and the Rams are able to use him as a workhorse, then a lot of those concerns will go away. If not, they’re going to have to get a little creative."

After rushing for 1,251 yards in the first 14 games of the regular season, Gurley sat out the last two weeks of the regular season before rushing for 115 yards in the divisional round playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys. However, getting only 45 combined yards on 14 carries against the New Orleans Saints and New England Patriots in the NFC Championship and Super Bowl raised eyebrows for fans who weren't already concerned about the ball-carrier's health.

The Rams did trade up in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft to select Memphis RB Darrell Henderson with the 70th overall pick, so it's possible that LA is preparing for a potential Gurley setback.

Rams reportedly have genuine concerns about Todd Gurley’s knee

May 26, 2019
by Steve DelVecchio

Todd Gurley has dealt with knee issues dating back to when he suffered a torn ACL at Georgia, and the same knee gave him trouble last season and limited his effectiveness late in the year. While the Los Angeles Rams have downplayed some of the concerns about the star running back, they are apparently very real.

Jay Glazer of The Athletic was asked in his most recent mailbag if the talk about Gurley having arthritis in his knee has been “overblown.” He said it is not.

“Nope, it’s not overblown. I think the biggest test will be what happens early in the season. If he runs and it doesn’t blow up and the Rams are able to use him as a workhorse, then a lot of those concerns will go away,” Glazer wrote. “If not, they’re going to have to get a little creative. They would be wise to be prepared because the knee has gone through a lot from college to now, so they’ve got to brace for it swelling up again.”

Rams coach Sean McVay admitted this offseason that the team needs to be conscious of limiting Gurley’s workload, and that is almost certainly why they used a third-round pick on former Memphis star running back Darrell Henderson. Gurley signed a four-year, $60 million contract prior to last season, so the Rams want to be smart with his usage and not run him into the ground.

While he refused to admit his knee was an issue when he rushed for 35 yards on 10 carries in the Super Bowl, Gurley clearly wasn’t himself. Having him healthy late in the season should be a priority for the Rams.

The season can’t get here fast enough. The only way we will know is when he actually starts taking carries.

What I expect McVay to say if all this is true :

“We will rally around Darrell Henderson, and we will play good football.”

Let me see if I got this right. So nothing new has been discovered or found out about Gurley’s knee, but yet somehow a sportswriter is now making a big deal about this while saying absolutely nothing new? OH LAWDY! Not this again!

I have gone over the article and am still wondering what is the "report"?

"According to the report, Gurley has developed arthritis in his left knee..."

The only report I am interested in is the one by the doctor.

I heard the talk about the arthritis, but i dont believe that it is medically proven, unless i missed that.

He actually looked pretty good to me on the carries he did get in the Super Bowl looked faster and fresh. I’m not worried about Gurley or his knee tbh

Even Jay Glazer is making shit up this time of year. Remember when all the talking heads said Goff was a bust? Same shit different stink. Gurley looked pretty good on the run that was called back in the SB, and against Dallas. I think the main reason Gurley didnt look like he did earlier in the season is because the OL didnt look as good as it did earlier in the season. I believe Gurleys knee was giving him problems which caused him to sit out the 2 games he did. But it didnt bother him against Dallas.

These are literally the same articles that have floated around here for months. Just rehashed. Same old source, same old response from the team.

I actually think this is (kinda sorta) “new” news.

Two things that feel kinda sorta new:

1. Someone on the Rams acknowledged there was serious concern. (I mean, the drafting of Henderson was a pretty strong signal though, right?) Anyway, acknowledging serious concern is different from McVay’s optimistic conclusion that “we expect Gurley to be a major part of this offense for years to come.”

2. Sounds like the plan is to not do any surgeries, no stem cell techniques, no micro fracture— just roll him out there and hope for the best. If it doesn’t swell up, great. If it does... uh oh.

Those of us who follow the Rams closely could have surmised that, yes, there are significant concerns, and no, there are no plans to undergo any near-term medical procedures. This report just confirms those two suppositions.

On number one, drafting Henderson was a significant indicator that there's something wrong with Gurley's knee if, and only if, signing Lance Dunbar two seasons ago was also a significant indicator of something went with Gurley's knee. They said they drafted him to fill that role. We saw what the offense looked like with Tavon Austin pretending he could fill that role on offense, we saw what it looks like when we don't have anyone for that role last season, and now we hey to see what it looks like with a drafted player filling that role.

The Rams came to 2 conclusions regarding their RB situation last year:

First - acceptance that using Gurley as a 20-25 touch RB every game was jeopardizing his availability to contribute as the season progressed and likely jeopardizing the longevity of his career.

Second - versatility in the RB position would be required against the better defenses. The ability to pound the ball up the middle needed to be augmented by an outside attack using screens, sweeps, off tackle, mis-directions. etc.

I know Gurley is extremely talented but the use of him as THE offensive workhorse was taking its toll. The addition of Henderson allows for a balanced multi-dimensional RB attack. This adds rather than subtracts from the offense - which should contribute to the 2019 offense becoming even harder to defend than the 2018 offense.
