My dog would just lick your hand and you'd happily give him the ball or throw it so he would bring it back to you for another go. Of course in MY dog's case, he'd take the ball, swim around, and drop it in the water, and never bring it back.

Animal temperament is definitely a variable, but all things being equal...a 50 lb dog has no chance vs a 50 lb cat.
Ever watch videos of Hyenas vs Leopards or Cheatas? Pretty similar weight. My money is on the Hyena in most cases.

Hyenas are more closely related to cats, not dogs.

Only if the Hyena's learned some martial arts...or brought guns.
It's funny because I was just watching a documentary the other day with my wife and I made the comment, "How many of these animals do you suppose a cat has to kill before it gets a meal?" One Hyena would come in and chase the damn thing up a tree an steal its prey. Hell - in one of them a lone Hyena stole a kill from two of them and left them sitting in a tree watching. Another one had a pack of the little devil dogs chasing off a lioness and lion. These cats were clearly bigger than the total weight of Hyenas - yet they backed off. Pound for pound? I go Hyena. Wild cat vs wild dog... victory - dog. Domestic cat vs domestic dog... victory - dog. Show me a heard of cats that will win out over a single Pit or Akita.

Think we've successfully derailed this thread yet?:ROFLMAO:

Hyena Species

Spotted hyenas are the largest of three hyena species. Brown and striped hyenas are the other two. Although hyenas appear similar to dogs, they are actually more closely related to cats. They live throughout much of Africa and eastwards through Arabia to India. Spotted hyenas live together in large groups called clans that may include up 80 individuals and are led by females.

OK - Cage match.... Wolf vs Cougar. Let's bring it!

Wolves are pack animals, and even in a pack, they don't fuck with cougars/pumas/mountain lions because it'll get a lot of the pack killed. They're smart in that regard.

A lone wolf would stand no chance against a fully-grown mountain lion - and I'm a huge, huge wolf fan (even have a tattoo of one on one arm and am planning on getting another tattoo this Christmas, if I have money).

I guess I'm the only one who likes both?

I like pretty much all animals. They all have different evolutionary paths which brought them to where they are now. Dogs are more personable because they're more domesticated, cats on the other hand are usually "meaner" because they're closer to nature.

Knowledge may be half the battle, but overwhelming violence is the other half.

Dogs have knowledge to help them. Cats use overwhelming violence.

Both are cool.

Oh, I like dogs and cats both. I just made a comment about kittens finding my wheelchair more fun than puppies do. I find it quite amusing.

I think I have a new favorite ROD person.

Cats have more tools for destruction at their disposal than dogs do, which certainly helps. I'm pretty sure that the average domestic dog has much stronger jaws than the average domestic cat. I would venture to guess that in a death match between a mean tempered 30 pound dog and a mean tempered 30 pound cat, the cat would die in the fight and the dog shortly after.

I've seen cats fight (I had a surly but loveable and ridiculously smart Siamese for a long time) and I've been attached by a cat in earnest (that same fucking Siamese). Their MO plays into the single strength of the dog, a crushing bite. Neither competitor would make it away easy regardless of the outcome.

I guess you just browsed your way through the thread and decided this? :)

I like all animals/pets. To be honest the only thing that sort of irritates me are those extreme dog/pet owner types. You know...the type who take their dogs to grocery stores, to pet friendly restaurants, talk to them like they're teenaged children, dress them up etc. They also can't leave home for more than 30 minutes because "they don't want to leave Muffy at home alone for too long."
I'm thinking....maybe Muffy could USE some alone time.

These extreme types are interesting in that quite often they have no actual human children.
Extreme pampering whether it be with kids or pets. It bugs me. Sorry.

I legit don't understand why people have dogs. I have never once encountered a dog that didn't stink - some less bad than others of course, but I imagine dog owners are just nose blind.

Cats on the other hand rarely smell, especially if you take care of the litter box. I grew up with cats and vastly prefer their independence. Having a dog is basically like having a child. I have friends who don't have kids but have three dogs and are severely limited by what they can do on a Friday or Saturday night because of their dogs and having to be home to let them out - that is mind boggling to me.

All that and then just take a look at the stories about dogs randomly killing people - sure, it's very unlikely to happen - but it is especially crazy to me that people have dogs AND children at the same time. Maybe just a .00001% chance of them attacking the kid but thats too much of a risk IMO.
