More details on the investigation of Patriots' deflated footballs

For much of the past two weeks, the Patriots have faced questions about whether they used deliberately deflated footballs in the AFC title game win over the Colts, eventually leading the NFL to tap Ted Wells to launch an investigation that will take several more weeks.

While owner Robert Kraft and every other member of the Patriots have declared innocence, Commissioner Roger Goodell said Friday that, "we have made no judgments" thus far.

But over the course of the last two weeks, multiple sources have shed light on the situation surrounding the Patriots, their 12 game-day footballs, and deflation. Here is what they've said:

>> Prior to the game, a game-day worker employed by the Patriots, a man described as elderly, took two bags of 12 footballs (one bag from each team) into the restroom near the referees' room in Gillette Stadium. The man was in the room for 98 seconds. When he exited the room, he took the balls to the field. There is video of the man entering and exiting the bathroom, but it's unclear if there is a clear shot inside the restroom.

>> That the man entered the restroom prior to walking with the footballs onto the field was discovered by the Patriots, and video footage was quickly turned over to Ted Wells for his investigation.

>> When coach Bill Belichick and Tom Brady were told there were questions about the footballs, both were incredulous. Belichick indicated privately what he said publicly: That he had little knowledge of what went into pregame footballs. Brady told someone close to him that he works on the footballs all week, then has no idea what happens to them on gameday.

>> Eleven of the 12 footballs used in the first half were judged by the officials to be under the minimum of 12.5 PSI, but just one was two pounds under. Many of them were just a few ticks under the minimum.

>> Many of the footballs used in the AFC title game, which all have Walt Anderson's initials on them, were returned to circulation among the rest of the Patriots game-day footballs. Because Anderson was the referee for two other Patriots games this season, there are more than 30 footballs with his initials in the team's possession. It appears the league has the football D'Qwell Jackson intercepted and took to the sidelines to ultimately hand over to his equipment staff.

What did you expect? I bet Goodell even apologizes to Craft, Brady, and Coach Cheat.

Spygate was covered up. So will deflate gate.

One of the reasons I wanted the Pats to win is the potential side effects a loss may do to Seattle. We see how a Super Bowl loss really killed the Rams. Hopefully a loss kills the Seahawks. We play them twice a year and it would be nice if they were ruined.

The only thing that remains to be seen now is if the public will swallow such an obvious lie. I'm unsure as to if it's been released as an official statement, or if it comes from a "reporter" whose been fed. Either way I'll bet the public lets it fly.

You truly have no idea. I'd rather deal with Seattle's fanbase than Boston. Can't tell you how many of them are douchey, obnoxious children with major superiority complexes.

On the other forum I post on, the Seattle fans are actually pretty decent.(although, I definitely would never post on a Seattle fan forum) They're homers like any fanbase and can be a tad annoying at times. But they're bearable and I can actually have a decent time trash talking with them before a Rams-Seahawks game.

The Patriots fanbase is not only one of the largest on the board, it is easily the worst. I am going to stop here before I go onto a long winded rant but the people in that fanbase make you want to punch a baby in the face...especially if said baby is wearing Patriots gear of any kind. They just come off as terrible human beings.

I must admit I pretty much agree with your entire post.

Bravo!

A good portion of the public will gladly accept whatever the media and the NFL tell them. I think we all know better. This is a team that cheats. They have been caught. Goodell is buddies with Craft. They will work together to cover it all up.

I don't know, I really think that since the sideline scandal, people will continue to question every victory of a Belichick team.

People love dirty laundry.

I can say without a doubt that I have all those feelings in the inverse. I haven't met one Seahawks fan that wasn't a whiny, entitled, crybaby asshole who didn't know a damn thing about his team because he only started caring about them at 2005 at the latest. Guys who couldn't even tell you who Shaun Alexander or Steve Largent were even if you said their names aloud. The type of guys who benefit from ref ball the most then the minute all call goes against them once they're screaming to high heavens about how the world's always trying to cheat them. We're talking guys with absolutely no loyal, who one minute will be all MARSHAWN, MARSHAWN, BEAST MODE BABY, but the minute it so much as looks like the team is going a different direction they turn on him like a mob, "We don't need him, hah! He was never really good anyways, Wilson was carrying him, Turbin will definitely take his place. We don't need that showy idiot, what was with that beast mode crap anyways." All done by the same people. I don't know where you've met these bearable Hawks fans, I'd like to know because I'd like to meet one Hawks fans in my life that I didn't want to punch right in the face. Hell, I'd like to meet one Seattle denizen I liked, I haven't met one that wasn't some spidery, whiny hipster douche. It doesn't even have to be Hawks fans, just listen to a Sounder or people who still call themselves SuperSonic fans because they've decided they liked basketball again after they moved but didn't give a shit beforehand.

Most of the Pats fans I ever met are annoying because they do that thing where people who like bad things profusely apologize for it like they've personally done it themselves. Then again, most Pats fans I Know have been Pats fans since the time where if they weren't hot shit they were getting blown out in Super Bowls.

Goodell is Kraft's bitch. Big time.

http://www.gq.com/sports/201502/roger-goodell-season-from-hell

http://www.gq.com/blogs/the-feed/2015/01/robert-kraft-roger-goodell.html

Excerpt from the second one:

For Goodell, Kraft's public offensive signals a potentially troubling twist in a relationship I explore deeply in GQ's February issue. In the piece, I quote one veteran league executive telling me Kraft is "the assistant commissioner." In recent days, Kraft and Goodell's bond has become a subject of intense controversy after photos surfaced of Goodell socializing at Kraft's house on the eve of the AFC Championship game, prompting Seattle's Richard Sherman to assert that Goodell has a conflict of interest in ruling on Deflategate.

It all goes back to 2006, when Kraft supported Goodell's candidacy over league attorney Gregg Levy to succeed Paul Tagliabue. The following year, Goodell came under fire for his mysterious decision to destroy evidence in the league's Spygate investigation. Kraft, in turn, has been a crucial ally throughout Goodell's stormy eight years on the job. "I think Roger has done better than any of us could have wished for," Kraft told ESPN's Don Van Natta Jr. in 2013. As a member of the NFL's compensation committee, Kraft is responsible for Goodell's controversial $44 million pay package. Kraft also works alongside Goodell on the elite broadcast committee, negotiating the multi-billion dollar television deals that make the NFL a profit machine. In the wake of the Ray Rice episode, Kraft privately lobbied owners to come out in support of the embattled commissioner.

A few random thoughts:
1] Kraft is one of, if not the, most imfluencial owners in the league.
As King points out, he has basically put Goodell on notice that, if they go too far with the investigation and ultimately conclude that the Patriots are innocent (or nothing can be proven conclusively), he'll want Goodell to apoligize.
Based on that, I see no way the NFL comes back with anything. They'll take the safe way out and say thay could find no conclusive evidence that the Patriuots were involved.

2] Having lived in Boston for 4 years, it's a great city with "interesting" people. Very independent people (most New Englanders are) who are passionate about their sports teams and unapologetic in their support of them. Red Sox fans are among the most dedicated and passionate fans in all of sports, IMO.
As far as "obnoxious children with major superiority complexes", I'd ask Jrry if he ever lived there. If not, not sure you can say that with any degree of validity.
Fact is, that area is the education capital of the United States (maybe the world). There's lots of very smart, very rich people. I can see why they may seem above others. It's no blue collar town, for sure. ;)
Seattle? Only been there once, but I do know there's tons of money there as well.
I guess my point is... in cities that are hubs of commerce and education, you're going to get people who appear above everyone. Not sure if that's the norm, but perception is reality.
Doesn't make me hate them... but, that's just me.

3] I'm a Rams fan... been one for over 47 years. I'm not as concerned about hating other teams as I am concerned about my team and what's going on right now.
Far too many question marks for my liking. Hoping it all gets ironed out and ther Rams can get back to winning Divisions, at the least. Got to nail down an OC first, then figure out that offense!

4] I didn't care who won the game last night... but I can say it was very entertaining, From a dramatic point of view, close to the 1999-2000 Super Bowl... right down to the end.

The people I've come across who are Pats fans are barely educated, so I dunno what all of this "Boston is the center of education" business is.

Mass may have a lot of universities, but that doesn't mean everyone roots for the local teams. Plenty of locals can't stand 'em and plenty of people who live there aren't from there as is the case with any large metro area.

Anyway, I'm just gonna jump ahead and say, CALLED IT.

I'm not even gonna wait for the findings. Bet the "little old man" was confused, too.

Yet another Stereogram-like test for the American people. Most people will just see the random noise.... a few will see the image behind it. And like Autostereograms, those that can't see the image will get upset and frustrated with those that CAN see the image and want them to drop their interest in it.

Thus it is with almost ANYTHING these days that requires critical thinking or confrontation of the status quo...

I mean, we're at the point now where a good number of people are going to put energy in defending cheating because they are quite literally unfamiliar with the concept of the integrity of the game.

I was mad before.

I'm more profoundly disappointed now.

Well, the stories aren't even trickling out.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/01/29/nfl-didnt-log-the-psi-of-each-patriots-football/

Seems either the NFL didn't actually take down the proper evidence or it's CLAIMING that it didn't...

Like it would have been too hard to find a damn pencil and write down the pressure.

This is the biggest crock of crap.

Goodell will get his report from Ted Wells and all it will say is that "something happened" with an old guy in a room with the balls. The Indy balls were unaltered, the New England balls seem to have been tampered with, but they won't be able to say by how much or who's responsible.

So, Roger Goodell... will ORDER A DAMNED MEMO BE SENT OUT.

And the bootlickers will insist that anyone who hasn't been felating Messrs Brady and Belicheck are traitors to the NFL and America!

Man... it may really be time for a break... because if this plays out like it's looking, I may just give this whole damn thing up. Screw the NFL if this is their product...

I live in the NW and am surrounded by shecocks fans. Most of them are fine. Get to the stadium and there are way too many A-holes among them and they feed off each other. They are some of the worst fans I've been around when in the stadium.

That being said, I have NEVER been around a Boston area fan that didn't make me want to kick him in the teeth. Just can't stand them. I'm sure there are some ok fans from that area - but I just haven't met them.
