Often injured, but good when he plays. Roll the dice?

Giants HC Tom Coughlin seemed to imply that free agent WR Hakeem Nicks won’t be back with the team next season during his press conference Friday.

“He’s a free agent,” Coughlin said. “Who knows? I’m sure the market is where Hakeem will go.”

All signs have been pointing to Nicks playing elsewhere next season, so it’s not surprising to hear that Coughlin mention that he will likely test the open market in the coming weeks.

Nicks, 25, should be one of the more interesting free agents to watch this offseason, considering that he is among the best available options at the receiver position. Although, Nicks has never played a full season for the Giants and did not catch a single touchdown in 2013, so that could end up having an impact on this next contract.

Nicks did put together back-to-back solid seasons in 2010 and 2011, but has since seen his overall production dip in the past two years.

The Patriots have been mentioned as a potential landing spot for Nicks, but it’s doubtful that they would be willing to get into a bidding war for him.

Why is Saffold at the combine? Is it the hip place to be for veteran players these days?
It could be that Saffold's not there, just his agent. His agent would certainly have business at the Combine.

Doesn't it say "Jim Thomas confirms that the Rams will meet with free agent OL Rodger Saffold’s agent at the Combine on Saturday to discuss new contract." ? I think it's his AGENT they are meeting with ... not Saffold himself.

Rams GM Les Snead told Pro Football Talk on Friday that they will not use their No. 2 overall pick on a quarterback this May.

  • Snead added that they do plan on scouting the top quarterbacks in this year’s draft class in order to determine the value of their pick.
  • Snead also reaffirmed that they are committed to Sam Bradford being their starting quarterback in the long-run.
  • Snead mentioned earlier in the day that contract talks with Bradford are “ongoing and active.
The Rams have refuted a report from earlier in the week that they have no intentions of locking up Bradford to an extension.

Bradford, 26, still has two years remaining on his contract with base salaries of $14.015 million and $12.985 million coming way during this time. As things stand right now, he has a $17.6 million cap figure next season, which means he represents an easy source of cap space if the Rams were to get him signed to an extension.

The Rams basically have no cap room to work with right now, so it seems almost certain that roster moves will be coming at some point in the near future.

  • Ian Rapoport reports that the St. Louis Rams are in Rock Hill, South Carolina today doing their ”due diligence” on DE Jadeveon Clowney.
At this point, it appears as though all options are on the table in regards to their first-round pick including trading down and possibly taking someone like OT Greg Robinson or DE Jadeveon Clowney.

Jeff McClane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, citing NFL sources, reports that the Eagles have prioritized re-signing WR Jeremy Maclin before addressing Riley Cooper.

  • According to McLane, the Eagles are expected to try and sign Maclin to a one-year contract and then look for another “starting-caliber” receiver free agency. The Eagles still believe Maclin can “thrive” in Chip Kelly’s offensive system.
  • McLane adds that Cooper “remains on the radar” for Philadelphia, but it sounds like he’s a contingency plan for Philadelphia.
Both players will be unrestricted free agents in a matter of weeks, but all indications have been that the Eagles were interested in retaining them.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports that a league source has informed him that Eagles Cooper should “significant” interest as an unrestricted free agent, which means it could prove to be difficult for them to sign him if a deal isn’t reached before the start of free agency.

Cooper, 26, was forced to fill in for Maclin after he went down with a torn ACL before the start of the season. Despite some off-the-field issues that brought up questions of whether or not he should remain with the team, Cooper went on to have a breakout year fort the Eagles. He totaled 47 receptions for 835 yards receiving to go along with 8 TDs.

Maclin, 25, has said publicly that he is open to signing a one-year contract after missing the entire 2013 season due to a torn ACL.

Ian Rapoport reports that Rams OL Rodger Saffold is generating “better-than-expected interest” interest from NFL teams.

  • Rapoport adds that Saffold is being looked at as more of a guard, rather than as a tackle.
Saffold, 25, appeared in 12 games for the Rams this season and rated as the No. 18 guard in the league, according to Pro Football Focus.

Ian Rapoport reports that the Cleveland Browns now view re-signing free agent C Alex Mack as “priority No. 1.”

  • Rapoport adds that retaining Mack will be “huge” for Cleveland given that it should help any incoming quarterback make an easy adjustment to the team.
  • The Browns are still expected to try and lock up CB Joe Haden as well, according to Rapoport.
Last we heard regarding Mack and the Browns, Tony Grossi reported that contract talks were expected to be tabled until Mack returns from a humanitarian trip to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the end of the month.

Grossi added that the Browns were hoping to sign him to a five-year deal, but Mack was looking for a three-year contract and later agreed to discuss a four-year pact, so this could be the frame work for his next contract.

Mack has played every snap for the Browns since being drafted in the first round in the 2009 NFL Draft. He will undoubtedly be the top center available this offseason, and will likely command something in the vicinity of the league’s highest paid center Ryan Kalil– who signed a six-year, $49.1 million deal in 2011.

Cheap receiver option. Was he drafted by Fisher in his last year?

Jim Wyatt reports that the Titans have “no plans” to re-sign impending free agent WR Kenny Britt to a new contract.

This, of course, come as little surprise given how the past three years have played out for Britt in Tennessee.

Britt, 25, wound up being a healthy inactive for three of Titans final four games, and even when he played, he was underwhelming.

In 2013, Britt totaled 11 receptions for 96 yards receiving over the course of 11 games. At one point, many thought Britt could be among the best receivers in the game after two solid years to start his career, but since then Britt has become a non-factor and will have a hard time securing anymore than a short-term contract.

I think it'd be a good move and a cheap one for the Rams to bring this kid in. Still young, two years removed from a bad injury and sure he was pissed at his team last year because they kind of threw him under the bus.

It's all about competition, and I think they could use it especially where the receivers are concerned.

I'd be open to giving him a look, but it'd have to be cheap.

He may end up being another Steve Smith (the bad one).

He's a headcase, but if he every gets it screwed on right again, he will produce at a fairly nice level.

Verner, Saffold, and a depth guy or two would would conclude an excellent free agency. We'd be in a really good position to go any direction in the draft.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that NFL teams have been contacting the Buccaneers regarding the availability of CB Darrelle Revis.

  • According to La Canfora, some rival executives believe Revis is “ripe to be dealt at start of league year.”
  • As of now, the Buccaneers haven’t received any “firm offers” from interested teams and are not in the process of shopping him around the league.
La Canfora mentions that Revis’ age and salary could impact their ability to get a lot of him in a trade.

New HC Lovie Smith has said that they have “big plans” for Revis moving forward and are looking forward to utilizing him in their defensive scheme.

Revis, 28, was just traded to the Buccaneers a year ago for the No. 13 pick in the 2012 draft, which ultimately became Sheldon Richardson and 2014 fourth-round conditional pick that can become a third round pick. Upon landing in Tampa Bay, Revis signed a six-year, $96 million contract.

His contract is interesting in that it includes no guaranteed money, but is structured so that he receives an annual base salary of $13 million along with $1.5 million roster bonuses.

Last year, he totaled 50 tackles, one sack, two interceptions and two forced fumbles over the the course of 16 games. Pro Football Focus has Revis rated as the No. 1 cornerback in the league last season.

According to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Rams did not make free agent OL Rodger Saffold a contract offer during a Saturday night meeting between the Rams and his representatives.

Rams HC Jeff Fisher and GM Les Snead mentioned during the Scouting Combine that re-signing Saffold was their top priority among the team’s impending free agents. Thomas expects a contract offer to come at some point “in the near future“.

Several reports have already surfaced indicating that the versatile Saffold would be a prime target for other teams should he hit free agency. The Rams are the only team that can negotiate with Saffold until March 8th.

Despite their apparent interest, it does not appear that the Rams would consider using the franchise tag on Saffold.

It would be extremely surprising to see the Rams place a franchise or transition tag on Saffold as a one-year stop-gap measure,Thomas wrote earlier in the week. “Last year, the franchise tag was $9.8 million and the transition tag $8.7 million for an offensive lineman. That’s a ton of money.

Saffold, 25, played left tackle for the Rams during his first few years in the league, but wound up playing numerous offensive line positions after they signed Jake Long in free agency. It will be interesting to see what kind of contract he secures this offseason as being viewed as a guard tends to limit a player’s contract.

Maclin Anyone?

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports that the Philadelphia Eagles view WR Riley Cooper as a greater offseason priority for them than Jeremy Maclin.

Florio’s report comes in direct contrast to what Jeff McClane report from last week which mentioned that the Eagles wanted to address Maclin before considering a new contract for Cooper.

  • Florio adds that the Eagles preference between the two players is “not even close.”

WR Steve Smith might become a free agent!

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap20...ve-smith-discouraged-by-panthers-gms-comments

Could this be the veteran the Rams might be interested in bringing to help our young playmakers? That could affect us taking a WR this year... But Smith does have experience that's lacking with our team and know what it takes to win in this league. Maybe he can be that Boldin for us... Not sure really. If the Rams REALLY believe in Brian Quick, then this move wouldn't be a bad one.

I'm not really sure at all, just throwing that idea out!

It would be funny to see him and Janoris meeting in the locker room. Think there's still some bad blood after the game last year?

Totally forgot about that. Yeah, I'd like to be a fly on the wall for that meeting. Personally I would rather they stay with the youth movement and draft a WR.
