Jared Goff has taken a beating this season, playing behind one of the worst offensive lines in football. Entering Week 11, he had been blitzed 121 times (5th-most in the NFL), hurried 35 times (8th) and hit 30 times (6th).
The poor play by the Rams’ offensive line has really held the offense back this year, but on Sunday night against the Bears, it had its best game of the season.

It just so happens that this performance by the O-line came with only one Week 1 starter on the field. Austin Blythe slid over to center in place of Brian Allen, Bobby Evans stepped in at right tackle for Rob Havenstein and Austin Corbett got the start at left guard. David Edwards lined up at right guard and Andrew Whitworth assumed his place at left tackle.
Goff was only pressured once on his 18 dropbacks, which is a pressure rate of only 6%. That’s the lowest he’s faced in his career, which says a lot considering it came against Khalil Mack and the Bears’ defensive front.

That passing chart still isn’t pretty, but it’s good to see the offensive line playing better – especially under those circumstances. It helps that the Rams used more 12 personnel and put two tight ends on the field throughout the game, but the offensive line did a great job.
They helped pave the way for Todd Gurley’s 97 yards rushing and Gurley wasn’t sacked once. Evans did an especially good job at right tackle, while Edwards was equally good at right tackle. Corbett deserves some praise for taking over such a crucial starting role after less than a month with the team, playing well in his first start.
This is a positive step for an offensive line that featured a lot of new faces, and it’s something for the team to build on.

Rams shut down Bears, hold on for 17-7 win: Instant analysis from Week 11

The margin for error in Los Angeles has become razor-thin for the Rams, and they needed a win in the worst way on Sunday night. They got exactly that, beating the Chicago Bears 17-7 at the Coliseum.
It wasn’t pretty, and it certainly wasn’t a shootout by any means, but the Rams got their sixth win of the year. They move to 6-4 on the season, keeping pace with the Vikings and 49ers, who won earlier on Sunday.

The Rams had just 283 yards of total offense, and Jared Goff struggled throughout the night, but Todd Gurley had a big impact and helped lift the team to victory. The defense was a big part of the win, holding Chicago to 267 yards and 6-for-17 on third down.

Player of the game: Todd Gurley
Gurley had his most productive game of the year, gaining more than 100 yards from scrimmage and setting a season-high with 28 touches. He was the only consistent player on offense in a game where neither team had much success.

Stat to know: 3.6
The Rams held the Bears to just 3.6 yards per play on Sunday night, limiting them to only 267 yards of total offense on 74 plays.

Game notes
  • The Bears defense is good, but there’s still something off with the Rams offense. Jared Goff simply isn’t playing well right now and it’s really holding the team back. Sean McVay opted to lean heavily on the run, which was the only part of the offense that worked, but it also limited the number of big plays Los Angeles could produce.
  • Goff finished the game only throwing it 18 times, completing 11 of those passes for 173 yards. He had zero touchdowns and one interception with a passer rating of 69.9. He should’ve had two touchdowns, but Cooper Kupp fumbled it at the 1-yard line and a 51-yard TD pass to Josh Reynolds was taken off the board due to a penalty.
  • Without Robert Woods, the Rams had to change things up with their personnel. They utilized a lot of 12 personnel, putting two tight ends on the field at the same time very often – especially early in the game.
  • Gerald Everett didn’t play much in this one, and even when he was on the field, he didn’t have much of an impact on the game. He was only targeted once and made a 20-yard grab, but he played his fewest snaps of the season. It’s unclear why that is, but Everett was limited in practice with a wrist injury this past week.
  • Gurley finally got going, being featured heavily on offense. The Rams were atrocious on third down, which caused drives to stall, but Gurley played well. He went over 100 yards from scrimmage and scored one touchdown, essentially carrying the Rams offense to victory. On a night where Goff was subpar, Gurley stepped up in a big way.
  • Jalen Ramsey had his best performance of the season as a member of the Rams. He covered Allen Robinson for much of the night, and the Bears wideout only had four catches for 15 yards. Troy Hill was also effective, making six tackles with one interception and a sack.
  • The Bears had almost no answer for Aaron Donald, as is the case for most offensive lines. He had two sacks, two tackles for loss and four quarterback hits in the game.

Yeah, I totally knew this would happen.

Rams would have a run heavy offense? Check.

Goff would have all day to throw? Check.

Rookie RT Evans would contain Mack? Check.

Ill be the Debbie downer here. Teams don't have tape on Evans. If he has weaknesses I'm sure they will try to exploit them. They don't have much on Corbett or Edwards either. I really hope they continue this success, but I need more than one start to get excited.

Goff only three 18 times, but it's likely that with so many new additions on the OLine, it was in the plan to pound the rock. Run blocking is a good way to get an OLine in a groove, or to start a young OLine out right. I think McVay didn't want to subject Evans and Corbett to having to protect Goff on every play, or many plays.

Oh let's see, no Cooks, no Woods, playing with stumbling bumbling, hands of stone Thomas. Playing behind a patchwork o-line......but the problem is Goff? DaSilva is completely clueless about how important it is to have chemistry between the QB and his primary WR's. DaSilva as I have repeatedly pointed out is just a pot stirring hack of a writer. Hell he even thinks Blythe is a good starting player. Why do people continue to give this guy credence he simply doesn't deserve? Goff threw 3 beautiful deep passes but it's somehow his fault penalties by his WR's and o-line brought them back. This would have been a rout had he had his primary WR corps.

With both Woods and Cooks out for an indeterminate time it's time to bench Thomas, play Webster, and move Everett to X WR, Reynolds to Z WR and Kupp at his normal Y WR position with Webster rotating with Reynolds in Cooks role. Few teams have enough depth at receiver to play as well as the Rams can....few have a QB as good as Goff.

I think we all need to see more, especially when Goff is asked to throw on 65% of his offensive plays again, these young guys haven't really been tested in pass pro like they will be. Still, they passed their first big test tonight as a unit and i'm damn proud of how they performed, so i'll be enjoying this win right up to the beginning of our next game. jmo.

The performance of RT Bobby Evans Sunday evening was huge IMO. Sure Bobby got a good amount of help from TE's Mundt & Higbee but I see no need to not to get excited over this performance after what we as fans have had to stomach with Long time starter Rob Havenstein this season in pass protection.

I know its only one game, but I am so proud of what I saw from Bobby tonight. Just maybe now Rob Havenstein will get his full act finally together from this point on, or Rob might find himself out of a starting job real quick. I have no issues with going with Evans the rest of the way either.

Now that I have said that I anticipate Havenstein to start against the Ravens with Bobby Evans returning to his important reserve position as the swing OT. Rams are going to need Bobby Evans early next year to replace Whitworth @ LT in Training Camp & pre season until Joseph Noteboom is fully healed & ready for regular season action.

I see reason not to have a positive outlook @ this time going into 2020 with all these below listed inexperienced OL'ers signed. The starting center issue remains an immense concern. If Havenstein continues where he left off then a LT will be up there too because Evans will end up @ RT.

LT- Evans <-> Noteboom
LG- Corbett \ Kolone
OC- Allen\ Shelton
RG- Edwards\ Brewer
RT- Havenstein <-> Noteboom

Also, so glad we paid Higbee. On one play, Higbee straight up stones Mack on a solo block.

I cheered very loudly when I saw that.

I saw that, too. I told a buddy "Donald has never been blocked 1 on 1 versus a TE."

Good thing Gurley wasn’t sacked this game, I don’t think he can take many more hits.
Are Edwards and Evans both playing right tackle? Hopefully not at the same time.
Kidding!

But to play devil's advocate, they played against a pretty solid Bears D. The fact that Khalil Mack was contained is very encouraging.

I would expect to see Evans getting less and less help over the next couple of weeks. If he can hold up there is no reason to put Hav back in.
I was skeptical of Evans playing because his preseason performance was so dismal.
But, sometimes that time not playing....learning the O, getting time in meetings, studying, watching how vets prepare, repping techniques and just mentally settling and not being overwhelmed by being in the NFL....makes a big difference.
Evans wasn’t on an island but it was a pleasant surprise. No penalties, played with balance and quickness pass blocking and got some push in the run game.
Heck of a good debut.

Five Takeaways: Young Rams offensive line grows up quickly against formidable Bears defense
by stu jackson

The Rams' offensive line made up for its lack of experience, its defense created a key takeaway and RB Todd Gurley came up big in their 17-7 win over the Bears on Sunday Night Football.

TheRams.com expands on those observations and more in this edition of Five Takeaways:

1) A YOUNG OFFENSIVE LINE GROWS UP QUICKLY
Outside of LT Andrew Whitworth's 208 career starts, here's how many the rest of the Rams' offensive line had entering tonight's game:
  • LG Austin Corbett - 1
  • C Austin Blythe – 26
  • RG David Edwards – 3
  • RT Bobby Evans – 0
That's right, a combined 30. And Evans, in his first career start, had to try to contain 2016 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Khalil Mack.

None of that mattered, though. Despite the injuries sustained by the group entering Week 11, it still did not allow a single sack against a Bears defense that had 25 through its first nine games, tied with the Packers and the Saints for 12th-most in the league.

The word that comes to mind to describe that performance is remarkable. Whitworth used "proud" frequently in the locker room, and I'd say that works pretty well too.

Rams OL

2) GURLEY GUIDES THE GROUND GAME
RB Todd Gurley said that before Sunday's game, Rams head coach Sean McVay told him they were going to "pound the rock."Sure enough, McVay's playcalling backed up his words. Gurley finished with 25 carries for 97 yards – both game highs – with one touchdown, adding three receptions for 36 yards.

In terms of scrimmage yards, it was his most productive game of the season. His 133 against the Bears surpassed his 101 against the Panthers in the season-opener. Given the injuries to the offensive line and the likely adjustments to follow, this was going to be a game that the Rams would need to count on Gurley. He certainly delivered.

3) DEFENSE CREATES OPPORTUNITIES
It was a key point of discussion in this week's First Look: Given that the Bears had the fifth-fewest giveaways in the NFL, the Rams defense was going to have to create takeaways themselves. Third down stops alone were not going to be enough to give the ball back to the offense and put it in position to score points.
CB Troy Hill made sure to help the cause.

His interception with 5:23 left in the second quarter gave the Rams possession near midfield, needing only 56 yards to reach the endzone. They would, thanks to Gurley's one-yard touchdown run at the end of it.

4) AND GIVE CREDIT TO SPECIAL TEAMS, TOO
Bears kicker Eddy Pineiro missed both of his field goal attempts Sunday night, and the second shank set up the Rams' first points of the game – a 38-yard field goal by kicker Greg Zuerlein.

The punt and kickoff units deserve their share of praise, too. Punter Johnny Hekker had two 67-yarders and a 63-yarder. Outside of a fumble recovery at the Rams 46, 10 of the Bears' 12 offensive possessions began inside their own 30.

5) A LOT OF PRIDE IN THIS VICTORY
Across several interviews and media sessions, it became clear this victory meant a lot.For Whitworth, it was probably because of having to bring several young offensive linemen up to speed against one of the toughest front sevens in the league.

For Goff, it was how the tight ends stepped up despite being hobbled by injuries during the week. All told, different position groups – especially on offense – experienced some adversity this week, either before or during the game.

Biggest stat?

For first time all season, Rams ran the ball up the middle and to the right with consistency. Rams OL finally had some push. Rams OL had some control of the LOS for the first time all season.

They didn't show much continuity, but that only comes with time.
