IMO, we all want our offense to put up Madden-type numbers, plus a shutdown defense. Unfortunately, in today's NFL, this will never happen. The league has made it perfectly clear they want offense, offense and more offense. Rules have been changed, over the recent years, to benefit the offensive side of the ball, and defenses are just a subtle speed bump. I'm okay with having a hi-octane offense and an above-average defense. I just don't think any team can have an offense who will put up 35+ points a game while surrendering less than 14. This is not your father's NFL.
