The Colts are trading a late-round draft pick to the Raiders for linebacker Sio Moore, both teams announced Friday night.

Moore, a third-round pick in 2013, started 22 games in two seasons with the Raiders and should get an immediate chance to contribute with the Colts, who need help at linebacker and on defense in general.

Moore has never played in a 3-4 defense but he had 3 sacks last season and 4.5 as a rookie. It’s unclear which position he’ll play with the Colts or where he’ll fit in a linebacker corps that’s probably not settled.

The Colts added veteran Trent Cole in the offseason and hope to have Robert Mathis back soon but might not have seen enough from backup outside linebackers Bjoern Werner andJonathan Newsome in the preseason. Werner, a first-round pick in 2013, had 4 sacks last year; Newsome had a strong rookie year getting after the quarterback and had 6.5 sacks.

Moore, who’s recovering from hip surgery, had fallen out of the rotation this summer with the Raiders.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport tweeted that the compensation the Raiders will receive for Moore is a sixth-round pick.

Giants cut wide receiver James Jones
Posted by Darin Gantt on September 5, 2015

The track record of productive Packers receivers when they go other places isn’t great.

And one of them is now available to come home if they want him.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Giants have released wide receiver James Jones.

Jones turned a 59-catch season with the Packers into free agent riches from the Raiders, but only lasted a year there. and now the Giants don’t want him either.

The Packers might, in the wake of Jordy Nelson’s season-ending ACL injury. He’s shown he can produce there, as many wideouts do when paired with Aaron Rodgers.

Giants move on from Henry Hynoski
Posted by Mike Florio on September 5, 2015

The Hynoski era has ended in New York.

Per a league source, the Giants have released fullback Henry Hynoski as part of the effort to get to 53. It ended a four-year run in New York, which included 46 regular-season appearances and 21 starts.

As noted by Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News, this development seems to indicate that Nikita Whitlock has won a roster spot.

Undrafted in 2011, Hynoski won a Super Bowl ring as a rookie. He’s now a free agent, able to sign with any team.

Panthers begin their cuts with wide receiver Brenton Bersin
Posted by Darin Gantt on September 5, 2015

After the season-ending injuries to Kelvin Benjamin and Stephen Hill in training camp, the Panthers knew they were in a tough spot at wide receiver.

So it appears they’re going to be looking at the waiver wire the next few days for upgrades.

According to Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer, the Panthers began their cuts today with wide receivers Brenton Bersin and Mike Brown.

Bersin was a local kid, who actually grew up in owner Jerry Richardson’s neighborhood and attended his alma mater, Wofford. He played in 15 games last year, and caught 13 passes, and was popular among the fan base.

But the Panthers just traded for Seattle castoff Kevin Norwood, and appear set to look at other options around the league as well.

They know they’ll count on second-rounder Devin Funchess and Ted Ginn, and perhaps Corey Brown despite his preseason drops. But beyond them, Bersin was their next level of receiving help, and cutting him is a good sign they’re looking at sweeping changes.

Patrick Omameh, Khaseem Greene among Buccaneers cuts
Posted by Josh Alper on September 5, 2015

The Buccaneers didn’t announce any of their roster moves on Friday, but the NFL’s daily transaction report confirmed the departure of defensive endDa’Quan Bowers along with nine other cuts that trimmed the team’s roster to 65 players.

Among the ex-Buccaneers is Patrick Omameh, who started all 16 games at right guard for the team in 2014 but lost his spot on the roster with third-round pick Ali Marpet moving into the starting lineup. They also released linebacker Khaseem Greene, who joined the team off of waivers from the Bears during the offseason. Greene started six times for the Bears over the last two seasons and returned an interception 98 yards for a touchdown last Thursday, but the Bucs have opted for other options.

The team also confirmed that Kyle Brindza will be their kicker by releasing Connor Barthand waiving Patrick Murray with an injured designation.

Linebacker Larry Dean, quarterback Seth Lobato, cornerback Brandon Dixon, defensive back Chris Hackett and wide receiver Tavarres King. There’s no mention of it on the transaction report, but multiple reports also have fifth-round wide receiver Kenny Bellheaded to injured reserve with a hamstring injury.

Falcons down to 67 players
Posted by Josh Alper on September 5, 2015

Friday brought reports that the Falcons have settled on Sean Renfree as the backup to Matt Ryan by cutting Rex Grossman and T.J. Yates.

The Falcons confirmed those moves on Friday night and they added six other cuts to get the ball rolling toward the 53-man limit they and the other 31 teams in the NFL must reach by Saturday afternoon.

None of the other names are as recognizable as the two quarterbacks. Linebacker Terrell Manning has seen time with the Packers, Chargers, Bears and Giants since entering the league as a fifth-round pick in 2012 and defensive end Cliff Matthews has played in 32 games for the Falcons over the last three seasons. The Falcons also cut 2015 seventh-round tackle Jake Rodgers.

Safety Sean Baker, guard Jared Smith and cornerback Kevin White have also been cut loose.

Matt Flynn says his goodbye to the Jets, Josh Johnson gone too
Posted by Darin Gantt on September 5, 2015

When the Jets needed a quarterback for training camp after Geno Smith got punched in the face, coach Todd Bowles described Matt Flynn as “the only one available, too.”

So today’s news probably shouldn’t be much of a surprise.

Flynn just tweeted out a thank you and goodbye to the Jets, saying he was headed back to Louisiana. And then he tweeted out a photo of a giant Bloody Mary, so he’s apparently handling it well.

The Jets also cut Josh Johnson, per Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, leaving rookie Bryce Petty behind Ryan Fitzpatrick while they wait on Smith to recover from his broken jaw.

Report: Jets cut Jason Babin
Posted by Zac Jackson on September 5, 2015

The Jets will cut veteran pass rusher Jason Babin as part of the team’s final preseason roster cut, Manish Mehta of theNew York Daily News is reporting.

The Jets were Babin’s eighth team. The two-time Pro Bowler was a valuable contributor last season for the Jets, playing in all 16 games, making four starts and recording two sacks.

Babin turned 35 in May. Teams are always looking for pass rushers, so he’s likely to get at least another look.

Steelers get to 52, sign a 53rd
Posted by Mike Florio on September 5, 2015

Like all teams, the Steelers were required to get to 53 players by 4:00 p.m. ET on Saturday. They got to 52, then added a 53rd.

The team has announced the release of running backs Jawon Chisholm and Josh Harris, defensive linemen Matt Conrath, Ethan Hemer, and Mike Thornton, safeties Jordan Dangerfield, Alden Darby, and Gerod Holliman, offensive linemen Reese Dismukes, B.J. Finney, and Doug Legursky, cornerbacks Kevin Fogg and B.W. Webb, linebackers L.J. Fort, Shayon Green, and Howard Jones, and wide receivers Shakim Phillips and Jarrod West.

Legursky, who spent 2009 through 2012 with the Steelers and played for the Bills in 2013 and the Chargers last year, was signed after center Maurkice Pouncey suffered a broken ankle in a preseason game. Legursky started Super Bowl XLV, when Pouncey couldn’t play due to a sprained ankle.

The Steelers also waived offensive linemen Kevin Palmer and Mitchell Van Dyk with the “injured” designation. If they clear waivers, they’ll be placed on the team’s injured reserve list.

The Steelers filled the 53rd roster spot by signing cornerback Ross Cockrell, a fourth-round pick of the Bills in 2014 who appeared in seven games. He was signed to a one-year deal.

Eagles cut roster to 52
Posted by Mike Florio on September 5, 2015

Technically, Tim Tebow may have made the cut to 53 in Philly. The only problem is that the Eagles opted to reduce the roster to 52, one less than the mandatory minimum as of 4:00 p.m. ET on Saturday.

The cuts were receiver Rasheed Bailey, offensive lineman Brett Boyko, offensive lineman Malcolm Bunche, cornerback Randall Evans, tight end Andrew Gleichert, linebacker Najee Goode, receiver Jeff Maehl, receiver Freddie Martino, defensive end Brian Mihalik, offensive lineman John Moffitt, running back Raheem Mostert, receiver Quron Pratt, safety Chris Prosinski, defensive tackle Travis Raciti, safety Ed Reynolds, linebacker Deontae Skinner, punter Kip Smith, quarterback Tim Tebow, tight end Eric Tomlinson, offensive lineman Julian Vandervelde, linebacker Diaheem Watkins, and defensive back Jaylen Watkins.

The 53rd roster spot could go to a quarterback, but that quarterback won’t be Tebow.

Bengals release Devon Still
Posted by Mike Florio on September 5, 2015

Last year, Bengals defensive lineman Devon Still became one of the most recognizable players in the league, not due to his performance on the field but because his young daughter, Leah, was fighting cancer.

The Bengals, who had cut Still before the season, gave him a spot on the practice squad at a time when he very much needed the health insurance. They eventually added him to the active roster in September.

Still, a second-round pick in 2012, will now head to the waiver wire. He’ll become a free agent if he clears waivers.

He has appeared in 30 career regular-season games in three NFL seasons.

Browns cut Thad Lewis, so Johnny Manziel must be OK
Posted by Darin Gantt on September 5, 2015

The Browns must be confident that Johnny Manziel is ready to throw actual footballs soon.

According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Browns have releasedquarterback Thad Lewis as part of their moves to get to the 53-man roster limit today.

Pat Devlin is still on the roster, but it’s early yet, and we’re not sure they’re going to carry two or three.

But Lewis has a modicum of experience, so you’d think if they’re letting him go, the feel good about Manziel’s ability to back up Josh McCown.

Lions going with two quarterbacks, cut Kellen Moore
Posted by Darin Gantt on September 5, 2015

The trend toward keeping two quarterbacks has apparently extended to Detroit.

According to Field Yates of ESPN, the Lions have cut quarterback Kellen Moore and tight end Joseph Fauria.

Getting rid of Moore leaves Dan Orlovsky as the only backup to Matthew Stafford.

The Lions had kept the former Boise State quarterback around for three seasons, but he never appeared in a regular season game.

Fauria was made expendable when the Lions traded for Tim Wright recently.

Bengals announce cuts, place Burfict on PUP
Posted by Zac Jackson on September 5, 2015

The Bengals announced their moves in getting their roster to 53 Saturday, and placing linebacker Vontaze Burfict on the physically unable to perform list was the most notable move.

Burfict is recovering from microfracture surgery and Bengals coach Marvin Lewis has said there’s no timetable for his return. Placing him on PUP means the Bengals won’t have him back until at least the seventh game of the season.

Devon Still is the most recognizable name of the players the Bengals released. He is also the only one not eligible to be placed on the team’s practice squad.

The Bengals waived-injured linebackers Jayson DiManche and Marquis Flowers. A sixth-round pick in 2014, Flowers was injured in the final preseason game after turning in a solid camp.

Cut by the Bengals were cornerback Brandon Ghee, safety Shiloh Keo, wide receivers Michael Bennett and Jake Kumerow, guards Dan France, Trey Hopkins and Tanner Hawkinson, quarterback Keith Wenning, kicker Tom Obarski, center Jake Smith, cornerback Troy Hill, tight end Matt Lengel, safety Floyd Raven Sr., linebacker Trevor Roach, offensive tackle Matthew O’Donnell, defensive tackle DeShawn Williams and running backs James Wilder, Jr. and Terrell Watson.

Saints cut Parys Haralson
Posted by Mike Florio on September 5, 2015

As the Saints work on improving their defense, they’ll try to secure some addition by subtraction.

Veteran linebacker Parys Haralson has been released, according to multiple reports.

Traded to the Saints in August 2013, he appeared in 32 regular-season games with 20 starts, including 6.5 sacks. The Saints needed Haralson because Will Smith had suffered a season-ending knee injury.

Haralson signed a new contract with the Saints in February, which paid out an $80,000 signing bonus with $270,000 in guaranteed money.

The Saints presumably will get credit for the $270,000 if Haralson, 31, lands elsewhere.

Bills release Matt Cassell
Posted by Zac Jackson on September 5, 2015

The Bills have released quarterback Matt Cassel, officially ending a quarterback competition that saw Tyrod Taylor named the team’s starter earlier in the week.

Cassel started the first preseason game and was the early favorite over Taylor and E.J. Manuel based on experience. The Bills, at least for now, are keeping Taylor and Manuel as the only quarterbacks on the active roster.

The Bills already paid Cassel a $500,000 roster bonus, but they avoid having to pay Cassel a $4.15 million base salary for 2015.

The Bills also cut defensive tackle Red Bryant, linebacker Kevin Reddick, safetyJohnathan Meeks and center Dalton Freeman.

Broncos cut cornerback Tony Carter, 19 others to get to roster limit
Posted by Darin Gantt on September 5, 2015

The Broncos made 22 moves to get to the 53-man roster limit, and running back Montee Ball was not among them.

Ball had been mentioned in some trade speculation, but they’re hanging onto him for the moment, apparently.

The Broncos placed T.J. Ward and Derek Wolfe on the reserve/suspended list, and released 20 players.

That group includes cornerback Tony Carter, nose tackle Sione Fua, linebacker Zaire Anderson, linebacker Lamin Barrow, running back Kapri Bibbs, wide receiver Isaiah Burse, center Dillon Day, safety Josh Furman, guard Ben Garland, tight end Marcel Jensen, linebacker Steven Johnson, tight end Dominique Jones, wide receiver Corbin Louks, nose tackle Chuka Ndulue, cornerback Taurean Nixon, linebacker Gerald Rivers, tackle Kyle Roberts, tackle Charles Sweeton, wide receiver Jordan Taylor and defensive end Josh Watson.

Titans releasing receiver Hakeem Nicks
Posted by Curtis Crabtree on September 5, 2015

Hakeem Nicks said last month that his style of play didn’t fit with the Indianapolis Colts last season.

It may not fit with the Tennessee Titans either.

According to Terry McCormick of TitansInsider.com, Nicks is being released by Tennessee as part of their roster cuts. The team apparently intends to start the season with just four receivers on their active roster.

Nicks caught just three passes for 59 yards during four preseason games. Nicks started all four of those games but apparently did not impress enough to warrant a spot on the team’s roster.

Jets cut veteran linebacker Joe Mays among moves to get to 53
Posted by Darin Gantt on September 5, 2015

The Jets didn’t have to make as many cuts as other teams, since they have a pair of players suspended. But they made 19 cuts along with those moves to get to the 53-man roster limit.

Defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson (four games) and offensive lineman Oday Aboushi (one game) are not eligible, and the Jets also placed running back Stevan Ridley on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, which knocks him out for at least the first six weeks.

Veteran linebackers Jason Babin and Joe Mays and quarterbacks Matt Flynn and Josh Johnson topped the list.

They also released wide receivers Shaquelle Evans, Chris Owusu and Walt Powell, tight ends Arthur Lynch and Wes Saxton, running back Daryl Richardson, fullback Julian Howsare, offensive linemen Charles Brown and Wes Johnson, defensive linemen Ronald Talley and Jordan Williams, linebackers Deion Barnes and Taiwan Jones, cornerback Keon Lyn and safety Durell Eskridge.

Chiefs get down to 53, trade safety Kelcie McCray to Seahawks
Posted by Michael David Smith on September 5, 2015

The Chiefs are down to the 53-man roster limit, with moves including trading safety Kelcie McCray to the Seahawks.

That move, which gives the Seahawks some secondary depth, could indicate that Seattle doesn’t think it will have holdout safety Kam Chancellor back for Week One. The Chiefs get an undisclosed draft pick in the deal.

The Chiefs also cut receiver Da’Ron Brown, defensive end Mike Catapano, safetySanders Commings, linebacker Ja’Gared Davis, defensive tackle Hebron Fangupo, centerGarrett Frye, defensive lineman David Irving, linebacker James-Michael Johnson, center Eric Kush, receiver Tello Luckett, center Daniel Munyer, defensive back Deji Olatoye, guard Jarrod Pughsley, running back Darrin Reaves, cornerback Kevin Short, tackle Derek Sherrod, tight end Ryan Taylor, fullback Spencer Ware and receiver Fred Williams.

Kansas City also placed tight end Richard Gordon on injured reserve and moved cornerback Sean Smith to the reserve/suspended list.

Dolphins stick with the two-QB plan, cut McLeod Bethel-Thompson
Posted by Darin Gantt on September 5, 2015

The Dolphins continued to stick with two quarterbacks, as they released McLeod Bethel-Thompson and Josh Freeman today.

That leaves Matt Moore as the only backup to Ryan Tannehill, though that wasn’t completely unexpected.

They freed up veteran kicker Caleb Sturgis for future kickball action, going with rookie Andrew Franks there instead.

The Dolphins also released wide receiver Damarr Aultman, center Sam Brenner, defensive tackle Deandre Coleman, linebacker James Davidson, defensive end Emmanuel Dieke, running back Mike Gillislee, wide receiver Cobi Hamilton, tackleDonald Hawkins, linebacker Mike Hull, defensive tackle Anthony Johnson, safety Don Jones, guard Michael Liedtke, linebacker Jeff Luc, tight end Tim Semisch, tight end Jake Stoneburner, kicker Caleb Sturgis, safety Cedric Thompson, linebacker Jordan Tripp and tackle Aundrey Walker.

They also waived-injured wide receiver Christion Jones.

Kendall Hunter goes to injured reserve as 49ers go to 53 players
Posted by Josh Alper on September 5, 2015

Australian import Jarryd Hayne was right about making the 49ers’ initial 53-man roster, but things didn’t work out quite as well for another one of the team’s running backs.

Kendall Hunter is headed back to injured reserve. Hunter missed all of last season with a torn ACL, but was able to return to practice this summer and played in the team’s final two preseason games. Apparently that wasn’t enough to convince the team that he’s well enough to help them this season and the 2011 fourth-rounder will miss a second straight year.

Tight end Busta Anderson was also placed on injured reserve a couple of days after catching a touchdown pass in the team’s preseason finale while wide receiver Jerome Simpson was placed on the reserve/suspended list.

The 49ers, who traded for center Nick Easton on Saturday, parted ways with wide receiver DiAndre Campbell, cornerback Marcus Cromartie, guard/center Dillon Farrell, running back Kendall Gaskins, tight end Xavier Grimble, cornerback Leon McFadden, linebacker Nick Moody, defensive tackle Kaleb Ramsey, offensive lineman Justin Renfrow, defensive lineman Marcus Rush, nose tackle Garrison Smith, quarterback Dylan Thompson, guard Andrew Tiller and safety Jermaine Whitehead.

Charles James, EZ Nwachukwu dropped as Texans get to 53 players
Posted by Josh Alper on September 5, 2015

Cornerback Charles James and wide receiver EZ Nwachukwu gained some fans through their appearances on Hard Knocks this summer, but that popularity on the tube wasn’t enough to convince the Texans to keep them on their initial 53-man roster.

Both players were waived on Saturday, which makes them available to any of the other 31 teams in the league. Should they clear waivers, a spot on the practice squad in Houston is a possibility.

Most of the other recognizable names involved in Saturday’s moves had been previously reported. Defensive tackle Louis Nix, wide receiver Damaris Johnson, defensive lineman Brandon Deaderick and running back Kenny Hilliard’s fates were reported on Friday while quarterback Tom Savage’s trip to injured reserve leaked out earlier on Saturday.

Linebacker Lynden Trail, tackle Joseph Treadwell, defensive end Fili Moala, defensive end Dan Pettinato, safety Kurtis Drummond, defensive end Tevita Finau, seventh-round rookie running back Kenny Hilliard, linebacker Kourtnei Brown, offensive lineman Matt Feiler, safety Corey Moore, center James Ferentz, linebacker Max Bullough, linebacker Tony Washington and wide receiver Chandler Worthy were also cut. Guard Chad Slade went on injured reserve after having back surgery recently.

Titans keep just four wide receivers on 53-man roster
Posted by Darin Gantt on September 5, 2015

The Titans made their final batch of moves Saturday, but it’s clear they’re far from finished putting a roster together.

The team announced they released wide receive rHakeem Nicks, receiver Tre McBride, tackle Byron Stingily, guard Josue Matias, guard Will Poehls, receiver Jacoby Ford, receiver Rico Richardson, quarterback Alex Tanney and running back David Fluellen. They also placed linebackers Zaviar Gooden, J.R. Tavai and Yawin Smallwood on injured reserve.

While Nicks is a name brand based on his time with the Giants, the Titans clearly aren’t too worried about their depth at that position.

They only kept four wide receivers on their 53-man roster at the moment along with five tight ends, so they’re going to have to run an unconventional offense with rookie quarterback Marcus Mariota at the helm.

Either that or they’re joining the teams scouring the waiver wire in the coming hours for better alternatives.

A.J. Jenkins, Ben Gardner among Cowboys cuts
Posted by Josh Alper on September 5, 2015

Wide receiver A.J. Jenkins hoped that the third team would be the charm, but the Cowboys have decided to go with other receivers on their 53-man roster.

The former first-round pick was dropped from Dallas’s roster on Saturday afternoon as the team set their initial roster for the 2015 season. Undrafted rookie Lucky Whitehead did earn a spot in the receiving corps, which features five members overall.

The Cowboys also cut 2014 seventh-round pick Ben Gardner, who was squeezed out of the team’s defensive line group. The team also dropped quarterbacks Dustin Vaughn and Jameill Showers, leaving them with Tony Romo and Brandon Weeden as the only players at the position on the active roster.

Defensive end Greg Hardy and linebacker Rolando McClain were moved to the suspended list while running back Gus Johnson, running back Ben Malena, offensive lineman Laurence Gibson, offensive lineman Shane McDermott, defensive lineman Efe Obada, fullback Ray Agnew, wide receiver Clyde Gates, tackle John Wetzel, offensive lineman Ronald Patrick, wide receiver Nick Harwell, cornerback Joel Ross, linebacker Donnie Baggs, linebacker Dekorey Johnson, safety Joel Ross, cornerback Rod Sweeting and linebacker Ka’Lial Glaud were all cut.

Browns keep Terrelle Pryor
Posted by Mike Florio on September 5, 2015

The Browns have trimmed the roster to 53, and one guy won a job based not on production but potential.

Receiver Terrelle Pryor, who converted from quarterback after being cut by the Bengals, has made the roster.

The guys who haven’t made the roster are offensive lineman Karim Barton, quarterback Pat Devlin, running back Shaun Draughn, defensive back Landon Feichter, running back Tim Flanders, defensive back Kendall James, receiver Darrius Jennings, offensive lineman Erle Ladson, receiver Josh Lenz, receiver Vince Mayle, defensive lineman Jacobbi McDaniel, offensive lineman Andrew McDonald, offensive lineman Darrian Miller, defensive back Robert Nelson Jr., offensive lineman Vinston Painter, linebacker Hayes Pullard III, defensive back Joe Rankin, linebacker Mike Reilly, defensive back De’Ante Saunders, defensive lineman Dylan Wynn, quarterback Thaddeus Lewis, and offensive lineman Eric Olsen.

Running back Terrance West remains on the roster, but there are reports and speculation that he could be traded.
