That was the last you’ll see of Brees. Atleast a good Brees.
That ligament in your thumb completely alters the way you use your hand. The surgery is only productive 50% of the time. The recovery time is 9-12 months. It’s not something you can play through as a quarterback. Especially a small QB. He’ll never be able to grip the ball the same.

I tore that ligament wrestling 3 years ago and still can’t hold up a gallon of water with it.

I couldn’t imagine trying to grip an NFL sized football and throwing it.

I wouldn't speculate because guys have come back from far worse

Not to mention I’m guessing the quality of specialists and surgeon makes quite the difference in recovery time. Unfortunately us Joe Schmoes will always get lesser care and have longer recoveries than an athlete that has millions in value to an organization. Having said that, he’s certainly on borrowed time at his age.

Similar to what Kurt Warner dealt with. I wonder if he will also figure out that wearing a glove could be a quick fix.

Warner struggled with fumbling after he suffered multiple hand injuries from breaks to also a thumb ligament.

Then he went to using a glove and his magic returned.

In some ways I thought Brees' arm could be fresher by sitting out until November, but he will likely have to deal with grip issues. That could affect his accuracy.

At the time I was a professional fighter with top notch that good in touch with top notch drs. I choose not to get the surgery bc the recovery time & lack of success. I know more successful fighters that have the same injury and had the same result.

Tearing the ulnar ligament ruins your grip strength. Being 40 years old and trying to speed up the recovery is going to be very hard to do. No matter what dr they have.

Saints inevitably are thinking QB now be it draft or trade. With Payton signing that extension he will need to reload the position.

So yeah I think Brees will try to come back but might find himself moving to another team to extend his legacy. Which makes me think there is a good chance you're correct NoCo.

Well, Kurt was a lot younger than Brees is now. I agree with train on this one.

I'm thinking this may be the case. I hate to see a guys career end on an injury like this, but the injury is to his throwing hand, in a game and position of subtleties.

Let’s say your holding a water bottle. The ulnar ligament keeps your thumbs for falling and sagging while holding the bottle. Without it, you’re monkey gripping everything.

But, Taysom Hill is the next Steve Young.

I’ve always liked Drew, he seems like a class guy on and off the field. When I saw him not be able to hold the ball after the injury I felt bad for him, admittedly while also thinking our chances to win went up.

Brees is a GAMER and a class act. I'd rather see him play, so Saints fans had no excuse for the loss.

This ain't the end for Brees...he'll be back. I think Bridgewater can hold it down for them too.

If it's career ending for Brees then I do feel bad for him, for him personally, a little, him and his millions will be fine. But I don't feel bad at all for smug face Payton and the Saints, karma is one hell of a bitch

I think we're about to see the purge of the old guard while the young guns take the spotlight.

They'll shove the exciting QB's into the spotlight first, but as time goes and the dust settles, there'll be about three or four guys standing tall still.

Goff among them.

Brees arm was already questionable and now with a hand issue I don’t think he can overcome the injuries along with Father Time. The Saints defense is suspect and required Brees to have to throw way too much. Brees left a lot of money on the table to help the Saints cap situation and now he’s probably left holding the bag. Sad ending to a Hall of Fame career.

Brees will try to come back. He will try anything that might help him return to end the game on his terms. He is a class act, but I don't think he can go quietly into the night like this. IMO it will be ugly. His lack of heat on throws puts an emphasis on his touch and control being second nature. If he has nerve damage like Mr. Brenda W. did, he doesn't have enough time on his side to figure it out. If he has the perfect injury and the best surgeons and new technology that perfectly reattaches the ligaments and heals in record time, maybe he returns later this season as a threat, but we all know that's unlikely.
Still, I think he comes back, in 6 or 7 weeks, struggles badly, Taysom Hill and the run game become the focus.
Brees wont accept its over until next pre-season.
-Just my perspective/predictions obviously...
