Los Angeles Rams: CB Troy Hill
18 OF 32

  1. The Los Angeles Rams have a long-term plan at cornerback that doesn't appear to include Troy Hill.

Aqib Talib's age (33) and contract status play a major role in the organization's approach since the five-time Pro Bowl cornerback is a free agent after this season. The team also seems to want Marcus Peters around for a long time.

"We are excited about building into year two, and we've been really pleased with Marcus—especially pleased with what you can find out with all the experiences that we went through in one year," head coach Sean McVay told reporters.

Nickell Robey-Coleman is in the second season of a three-year deal. General manager Les Snead drafted Michigan cornerback David Long in this year's third round.

Where does that leave Hill? He's arguably the No. 5 cornerback on the roster and operating on a non-guaranteed one-year, $2.03 million deal.

________________________________________________________________
I don't think it would be a huge surprise if Hill were cut, after taking a safety and a cornerback with two of their first 3 picks, and having so little cap room available.

Depends if Kevin Peterson can play... He may have a shot to be the 5th CB.

There are some UDFAs in the running, and various returning dbs. There will also be some cuts who the Rams might look at during training camp. Hill has to look good, or they might as well save money they likely will need for in-season injury replacements.

Mike Daniels would be interesting to kick the tires on. Obviously McCoy, but we couldn't afford his asking price

Without a doubt. Hill is on the bubble.

Rams piggy bank that contains available salary cap $$$ is empty already. The soon to be 28 yrs old when the season begins & still RFA Troy Hill, will cost $2 million plus this season IF he decides to sign his tender offer. TH is the most experienced reserve that Wade has if you consider NRC a starter as I do. TH has played in 27 NFL games with 7 starts. He has been on & off 3 NFL teams Bengals Patriots & Rams waived four times.

TH has a checkered past. @ Oregon he was suspended from the team after he pleaded guilty to menacing. As a Ram, he was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence. NFL suspended Hill for the first two games of the 2017 NFL season after violating the NFL’s Substance Abuse Policy.

TH will face some very stiff competition this Training Camp. Healthy Kevin Peterson, Darious Williams (who was one of the nation’s most productive corners back in 2017 in college) & This year #3 selection Davis Long. There's also future Nickel-Backs Dom Hatfield & Dont'e Deayon.

Wade morphed to using 3 safeties more often than 3 CB's last season. With the talent level @ safety greatly improved & being sky high now there is NO reason to think Wade will not continue to move in this direction this up-coming season. None of which is good for Troy Hill. Rams could save approx 1 1/2 million if they decide to go with one of these younger corners in place of him. IMO would be the best way to move forward into the future.

  1. New York Giants: CB Janoris Jenkins

Since taking over as general manager, Dave Gettleman has traded or not re-signed Damon Harrison, Jason Pierre-Paul, Olivier Vernon and Landon Collins. Cornerback Janoris Jenkins can't be far behind his former teammates.

The Giants listened to offers for Jenkins before last year's trade deadline, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Right now, the coaching staff is quite happy with Jenkins. Defensive coordinator James Bettcher called the 30-year-old corner "unbelievable" in how he's handled the team's young defensive backs, per the New York Daily News' Pat Leonard.

But two factors work against Jenkins' retention. First, his contract holds a $14.75 million salary-cap hit this season, and the Giants can cut him and save $7.75 million. Second, the front office used three draft picks to address cornerback, including Deandre Baker with the 30th overall selection.

"Hey, business is business, baby," Jenkins said last season, per the New York Post's Paul Schwartz. "If they let me go, they let me go. If they keep me, they keep me."

If they cut him, he actually might end up with a pay raise, playing for a better team. Probably makes it easier to have a good attitude about the process.

FWIW I change my mind about cutting Hill every time I watch Hatfield try to cover somebody

I would have to agree with you here. He is a pure Nickle & Dime DB in emergency situations only. The period of time that soured me with Hatfield was back in 2017. Dom Hatfield should never line up on the outside corner posts P E R I O D!

Never understood Snead's positive comments about Hatfield I do not see what he sees, but he is the professional obviously I am not. Anyone notice that Snead has not signed any UDFA corners. The only added CB thus far came in the draft.

I still feel the Rams need another vet at ILB or EDGE. This will allow Matthews to be used more situationally between the 2 positions. Interesting available prospects include Shane Ray, Josh Bynes and Jamie Collins.

Its Peterson not Hatfield that will beat out Hill. Hill is decent depth but not worth $2M.

Undersized, but Darious Williams is a top prospect out of UAB nobody seems to be talking about.

Rams claimed Williams off waivers from the Ravens October 2018.

How good was his pro day? Top-10 cornerback good.
Williams’ finished his pro day workout with a 4.44 second 40-yard dash (tied for No. 9 among combine top CB performers), a 39” vertical jump (tying for second-best CB jump at the combine) and a 6.84 second 3-cone drill (would’ve put him at No. 10 among CBs at the combine).

One of the nation’s most productive corners in 2017, Williams picked off five passes and broke up 19 more during his senior campaign, proving his instincts, ball skills and technique overshadow his smaller frame.

https://draftwire.usatoday.com/2018/02/10/darious-williams-nfl-draft-profile/

Peterson displaces Hill saving nearly $1.5mil. in CAP and perhaps Williams can replace Hatfield for near even money ?

I also wouldn't be surprised to see the Rams pick up a CAP Casualty CB that they might sign short term at near vet minimum.

I like Peterson too, but if the Rams carry 6 CB's???

  1. Aquib Talib
  2. Marcus Peters
  3. Nickell Robey-Colman
  4. David Long
  5. Kevin Peterson
  6. Troy Hill
Now another could emerge or the Rams keep only five then it's easy. Maybe Darious Williams proves worthy.

Hill is a good depth corner. Those are important roles. Corners get dinged.

But, if youre looking for cap savings the hope is some rookies impress in that defensive backfield.

Yep. With Long now we might deem Hill too expensive, which would be fine with me. Peterson has shown flashes anyways.

But having said that - Hill was flat out good in place of Webster in 2017 - considering how our secondary as whole looked without Talib last year, I'm willing to give Hill a pass.

If we lost some CBs but our starters were Talib and Hill - I wouldn't hate that. But again, with Long now, I don't think a 5th CB is worth $2 million with our cap situation.
