Rams need Terrell Lewis to make immediate pass-rush impact when activated

There’s a lot to be excited about with the Rams this season, especially after a tumultuous offseason that involved major changes to both the roster and coaching staff. The pass rush, however, is not something fans (or the team) should feel good about after three weeks.

It’s been arguably the weakest part of the team, with everyone not named Aaron Donald struggling to generate much pressure on the quarterback. The edge rushers, in particular, have struggled through three games, with Leonard Floyd being the only one to record a sack; he has two so far.

According to Pro Football Reference, the Rams’ outside linebackers have combined for a total of four pressures on opposing quarterbacks. And as if that’s not bad enough, all four have been by Floyd.

Samson Ebukam, Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, Jachai Polite and Justin Hollins have zero quarterback pressures combined this season. They haven’t knocked down the quarterback once, generated one hurry and have just 12 total tackles.

All this is to say the Rams need Terrell Lewis now more than ever, which is a scary proposition considering he’s a third-round rookie with no NFL experience – not even a preseason snap. But that’s the position Los Angeles is in because Ebukam, Okoronkwo and the rest of the edge rushers are simply not getting it done. Even Floyd’s impact has been underwhelming despite the fact that he has two sacks in three games.

Samson Ebukam is ranked dead last (109th) in edge defenders per PFF with an overall grade of 39.6. Leonard Floyd is ranked 70th. Ogbonnia Okoronkwo is ranked 90th.

Lewis is currently on the reserve/non-football injury list after undergoing a knee scope to determine whether he had an infection from a previous surgery. Fortunately, he didn’t have one, but his timetable to return remains unclear.

I was thinking earlier this morning that I wanted to discuss Samson Ebukam with a new thread, lucky I found this article & lucky too that it discusses what a pathetic performance Ebukam has turned in in the first 3 games. I am on record here @ ROD on Ebukam that he was going to have a high performance 2020season.

I also found that Og Okoronkwo snaps have been non-effective too. It's obvious to me that the Rams front five posts have many defenders who are not performing anything close to being an effective NFL player.

Samson Ebukam is ranked dead last (109th) in edge defenders per PFF with an overall grade of 39.6.

Leonard Floyd is ranked 70th.

Ogbonnia Okoronkwo is ranked 90th.

I sure would prefer to see Ebukam benched & his starting post filled by a trio of defenders rookie Lewis, Polite & Natrez Patrick.

Have harped on this subject in several threads since Sunday. A linebacker with zero stats through two weeks of football should be an automatic benching no matter what. We literally could not do worse with him ranked dead last in the NFL. If Lewis can't go Polite or maybe Hollins seems like the obvious choice. Patrick I liked last preseason but the Rams seem very cold on him since they keep releasing and bringing back. But with Ebukam showing no improvement (and regressing really) in three years as a starter minus one great game against KC I see no reason not to test the youth.

Also on the injury front, there’s been no decision made yet about whether Terrell Lewis will be activated off the NFI list this week when he’s first eligible. In fact, there hasn’t even been a discussion about it yet.

“Haven’t talked about that yet. Certainly, wouldn’t rule it out, but as of right now, that’s not something that we’ve discussed,” he said.

Posted an article that had this which doesn't sound like the Rams have the urgency for Lewis to return.

It certainly time to try some new players off the edge. Hollins did get a pressure on the play where Allen grabbed his facemask. He only has played around 26 snaps.

I should have just placed this article in your previously started thread. Yes, I see no reason to keep Samson Ebukam in as a starter any longer. He will be a UFA when this season concludes. Ebukam is not needed in LA. I was impressed by last year's preseason performance by OLB'er Natrez Patrick.

Rams have both starting ER/OLB'ers designated as UFA's in March 2021. I would think by now it's evident that Polite & Okoronkwo just do not have the talent & skills to play in the NFL. This is Okoronkwo 3rd season & Polite's 2nd. Og's is a well-decorated NCAA player & was a starter in college since he was a sophomore, thus he does have a ton of experience in overall games. Polite was one serious dynamic top pass rusher in 2018 for the Gators. Maybe broken up slow Justin Lawler could be gotten on the phone after he was released.

As for the future into the next draft.......sure appears that OLB'ers/ER's will be one of the top needs for this Rams team. Aaron Donald sure needs some decent help before his prime time in the NFL is up. Right now AD is playing between Ebukam & SJ-D most of the time.(n)

Polite had the one chance and he got pressure IIRC maybe an uncalled facemask stopped a sack. It's too early dismiss him that's why I would like to see him get a few more snaps in the next couple of games.

I was impressed by last year's preseason performance by OLB'er Natrez Patrick.

Patrick did get some pressure in preseason last year. My fear is he is too slow to play all the time on the edge. I wouldn't mind seeing him pass rush a few times either. At this point, the Rams need to try others besides Ebu and Obo.

I hope beyond all Lewis gets better and starts showing us what he can do. I didn't like the pick due to his risk but just need him to get healthy and start getting that QB's ass to help Donald out! This is ridiculous.

We're weak on the edge, but we knew LB overall would be below average for this team. We need Lewis to come back and be healthy, it does no good for him to rush back just to go out again later in the season. I doubt he plays this week vs NY and I think we should hold him out versus Washington too. We can win both those games without him. We need him back and ready for the stretch run and playoffs.

I also I think Morgan Fox should be a primary edge rusher in known pass rush situations. He's flashed over the past few years when healthy and seems to have improved more. Fox, Brock, AD, Floyd as primary pass rush package until Lewis gets healthy. But regardless this isnt a good pass rushing front outside of AD, so I think Staley needs to bring 5 more often then he has.

Don't count out Justin Hollins. He is big and fast, and this is only his second year in the league. Someone has to step up. For gosh sake, I could get a sack with Aaron Donald on the other side!!!

I said in the eagle game day thread we need to AD some help from somewhere nothing I’ve seen has changed my mind

I think it might be time or mcvay and co to start using those first rounders .. I love the whole we are gonna have a a pick in the 28-32 range and any player we trade for will be better than that ... but man another young stud pass rusher in the first round would work wonders

I know for a fact that this is a lie. Jachai Polite had a QB hit on Dak Prescott on his only snap versus Dallas. He also drew or should have drawn a facemask penalty on the play (and would have had a sack if not for the penalty).

I mean I soured on matthews with the whole rams owe me during the pandemic thing

But he got to the QB on the regular .... there must be a vet pass rusher you can put on on 3rd and long out there somewhere
