Fowler had a good year. It could have been better but, he did miss some chances for big plays. I don't see him as a great one on one beat a tackle for a sack pass rusher. This will be a slippery slope for Demoff and Snead. Demoff will have to find the cap space. Rams are around 20 Million before accounting for incentives and bonuses from 2019. Everything happening at the same. This will be interesting to see unfold if Rams try the tag and trade.

The first thing is how much cap room can Demoff get to work with?

Would Rams have a deal in place for Whitworth to sign after Fowler is traded?
They will likely restructure Goff. Or at the very least they release Weddle and deal NRC... That would get them back to $28M.

I know some fans love NRC, but at $4M, he is not worth it. They are deep enough and they should add a young CB every year. So with what they have, add one draft pick and you have 5-6 guys, and 4 deep.

Ramsey
Hill
Williams
Long
Deayon

The reason I don’t expect that is the cap is expected to jump a bit in 2021 and we’ll know how much more for the few years after once the CBA is done. I would bet on myself because the difference could be many millions of dollars...

I dunno how much we can get from a Goff restructure because of the 30% rule for the last year of the current CBA meaning that the salary cap hit in '21 can't be more than 30% more than in '20. They're on purpose doing this to prevent a ton of back loaded contracts.

Am I the only one who notices that the Seahawks played that to perfection? Look at what they got for clark and what they gave up for clowney

Our new DC is an OLB coach who has played with Mack and Miller - Fowler is not those guys obviously, but I doubt he wants the cupboard bare. I think Fowler will be playing for the Rams in 2020 and honestly, I think he'll get a long term deal.

Only got Clowney for one yr though. Now can they try to tag and trade him? His injury history may hamper that and as disruptive as he is, he still only had 3 sacks this yr.

They will get a comp pick next year regardless though.

I can see this if he does not want absolute top dollar.

If they restructure Goff and get that extra 15M if cap space, as has been reported as the savings they could realize, then this is possible.

They have been aggressive about putting the top players on the field to win now, and after falling short last yr, the motivation is there to go all out in yr one if the new stadium.

However if Fowler wants $20M per yr, that is not going to happen.

Maybe he settles for $17M w/ incentives.

I do not see the cupboard being bare if DF was to no longer a Ram.

There is not much of a cap savings in cutting Clay Matthews who gave us 8 sacks in only 12 gms. Our new DC would surly want to have a veteran Matthews here to assist him with all these young Edge Rushers that the roster presently has. I could also see CM playing better in a new defensive scheme.

#1-Clay Matthews
#2-Samson Ebukam
#3-Ogbonnia Okoronkwo
#4-Justin Lawler
#5-Natrez Patrick
#6-Jeff Holland
#7-Jachai Polite

My position here is Snead will have great desires to improve on his outcome on the 2021 Compensatory Draft Selections Cancellation formula. Snead's results from last years Compensatory Draft Selection Awards (CDSA) took several big hits.

First hit was Ndamukong Suh on May 21 2019 finally did a 1 year $9.25 million contract with Tampa Bay which was past the cut off CDSA designated UFA signing period. Second hit was the low end $$$ Matthews $4.6 mil contract cancelling out the $10.2 mil. contract of Lamarcus Joyner.

Ref. OLB'er Dante Fowler Jr. tag & then advertisement (open for trade for draft pick) possibility vs the CDSA much more probable sound expectation of a 3rd round selection will be great theater for Ram fans. I see Dante Fowler's worth slightly higher than DE Jadeveon Clowney based on their 2019 performances. JC's market Value is $20 mil.

Other Ram UFA's like Micheal Brockers, Andrew Whitworth, Cory Littleton will sure get many offers. If Whitworth signs for another season with another team is another big question lingering out there & a LT starved NFL team that is also well-endowed with salary cap bank $$$$ might shock us all @ what AW could get in a new contract. The 29 yr old veteran Brockers who has demonstrated for many yrs now outstanding professional traits any 43 D team would love having him playing DT. Littleton can play any of the LB'ing post in a 34 D or 43 D so his market is far & wide raging.

CL? Corey Littleton? How would he be assisting the edge rushers?

Most of Matthews sacks were coverage sacks, and overall he wasn't very good last year - your list is essentially 7 below average players with only two that have potential right now to be average starters - Ebukam (who is basically there) and Obo.

I don't understand the fascination with comp selections. Last year it made sense - we didn't need much. But this year we have several starters that are free agents and I doubt we will balk at replacing them because of some potential midround draft picks. If it works out that way, as it did two years ago when we made several acquisitions while also not impacting the comp formula, then cool - but if we have the opportunity to add a good free agent, particularly on the offensive line, we can't pass that up.

I'm down for a tag and trade. Got to get atleast a 3rd round pick though. He'll net us a 2021 3rd round comp if he is just released right? So running the risk of no trade partners, I'd look for a little more value than that likely comp pick. As for cap room, you can easily rework some contracts to give us room, especially if you are counting on that cap space being freed up after a trade.

If they tag and try to trade him, I think they will create enough space with a Goff restructure, etc.. so that if they can't strike a Fowler trade deal, that they are okay with keeping him.

In that event there is not a lot of downside.

You keep him at the $16M tag level for one yr or you move him for a nice trade package.

It would seem like many members did not get your memo on the above post about some leverage that a tagged Fowler would have.

If I were Snead I would be leaning in the direction of not doing anything with Dante Fowler UFA'cy. I would let him make the big splash & enter the FA market without a tag & then move & work to reap the rewards later in 2021 with a 3rd round awarded comp pick when the Rams will be without three draft selections.....first, 4th & 5th round selections. I am showing my conservative side here.

Outstanding Post flv as usual.(y):giggle:

If the Rams tag him, in order to trade him he needs to sign the 1 year tender first though right?

Fowler also would want long-term security vs another one year deal.

And he is not sitting out and passing on a $16M salary.

So he may have leverage, but so do the Rams.

Or be able to work out a long term deal with a team if it’s done before the deadline. That’s why Clowney wasn’t able to sign an extension with Seattle.

Sorry I did not get back with you earlier on this.

I would expect the new DC will certainly have some different insight on the LB'ing unit than what Barry & Wade had. Certainly that even with a scant amount of draft selections in this year's draft that he will bring in some new talent.

I really liked what I saw from rookie OLB'er Natrez Patrick in pre season & early regular season...he was much quicker & effective than I would have expected from what I saw when he was a UGA playing the MLB post.

Once Og Okoronkwo finally got healthy he began to get caught up from being unhealthy for over a year. #45 is going to be one excellent pass rusher for us in 2020. I would not say that Jeff Holland & Jachai Polite do not have talent either. Justin Lawler was our top OLB'er reserve back in 2018 & played sound smart football particularly against the run.

If comp picks made sense last year it will certainly have much more signification in the upcoming 2021 draft. There is a price to pay for the ultra large contract dished out to Goff. Gurley, Donald, Cooks, Higbee, Ramsey & Havenstein. Payday some day & the bills are coming in fast.
