I still don't get the supplemental draft, we give up a 2016 draft pick for a player? Does it go in light of the draft order this year?

The order for deciding whether we use a supplemental pick is based on last year's record. But where it affects next year is based on the next year's record. So if the Rams wanted to use a first in the supplemental they would have the tenth pick, so only 9 teams would have an option to pick before them. But the actual pick the Rams would end up losing would be #32, after the Rams win the Super Bowl.

So on the one hand, the team is giving up a pick from NEXT year's draft to get a player for this season. OTOH, the rookie they pick will have missed everything prior to training camp, so is going to be behind the rest of the team, diminishing the value of the pick somewhat.

The supplemental draft is done in silent auction style. Teams put a bid in for a player not knowing what other teams are offering.

Expanding on @Akrasian 's explanation.

Nice! Thank you for the information! Obviously you can google anything but I like hearing a brief breakdown from a fellow Rams fan! Lol
I've never paid attention to supememtal draft due to its limited impact on a team.

Isaiah Battle - T - Player
An NFC personnel man told the Newark Star-Ledger that he hears the Falcons are the "most interested" team in Clemson LT Isaiah Battle.

"I'll be surprised if he's not taken," said the same executive. "He's worth a shot, for sure. It's just a matter of how much is he worth to you." Battle is expected to be taken in next Thursday's Supplemental Draft, but has a number of off-field issues, hence his decision to leave Clemson and bolt for the NFL. He's going to be a project, but has ideal height at 6-foot-7 and a slender 275 pounds.

Clemson tackle Isaiah Battle is the only player from an FBS program in next week’s supplemental draft and he’s thought to have the best chance of any player in the pool to become the first player to enter the league this way since the Browns took wide receiver Josh Gordon in 2012.

Teams interested in taking Battle off the board will get a chance to watch him work out a couple of days before the July 9 draft. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports Battle will hold a pro day workout on Tuesday, July 7. Any team that takes Battle will surrender their pick from the same round in the 2016 draft.

Battle said that he’s leaving Clemson now because he has “some family matters to address,” including the birth of a child this summer, but he also had a string of disciplinary issues while at the school that helped hasten his move to the professional ranks.

Battle started 11 games at left tackle during the 2014 season and, at 6-7, has the kind of size that teams like although he probably needs to bulk up from 275 pounds before he’ll be a contender to play the position in the NFL.

Isaiah Battle’s pre-supplemental draft workout draws 26 teams

In a sign that Isaiah Battle is viewed as the best supplemental draft prospect in years, his workout today is drawing a large crowd of NFL scouts.

Representatives from 26 teams are attending Battle’s workout today, Mike Reiss of ESPN reports.

Based only on his on-field abilities, Battle would be viewed as a very good pro prospect, likely somewhere in the second-round range. Unfortunately, Battle has a history of off-field issues that precipitated his departure from Clemson, where he started 11 games at left tackle last year. Those off-field issues will likely make him a late-round pick in the supplemental draft.

If he’s drafted at all, Battle will be the first player chosen in the supplemental draft since Josh Gordon in 2012.

A day 2 pick is too rich for me (plus, I don't think we could use one anyway since those picks are in Eagles limbo)

A day 3 pick I could get behind.

But as with any talk about adding another O Lineman to the mix - I say - who are you going to cut?

Grob
Saffold
Havenstein
Brown
Donnal
Wichmann
Barnes
Jones
Rhaney
Reynolds

thats 10 as it is .... and doesn't include Baker, Wang, or Brandon Washington - and I don't see any names that I'd be jumping up and down to cut to add Battle to the roster. If the Rams do take him - it means that either their first impression for at least one of the new lineman wasn't so hot or that they think the kid is just too good to pass on. The kid can throw a punch, I'll give him that.
