If you watch the replay in slow mo, you can actually see that his thumb gets trapped in a facemask and that is likely where most of the damage took place.

well goff had a broken thumb and played... so i have a feeling he may be able to play with this
 
Isn't there a veteran QB sitting on his couch somewhere? anyone would be better than Rypien imo
