The more I see of him the more I think he would be a great choice at #22.
With Long it would make the OL a strength for the next 5 seasons.

One of my favorite guys. I think he's been overanalyzed to death. Dude is a beast and the tape backs it up. If they hadn't signed Jake Long I would've had him w/ the 22nd pick.

I don't see them taking him now. That would mean trading Rodger Saffold, and you only might get another 2nd rounder and maybe a 4th or 5th. Doesn't make any sense to me.

Saffold may not be their "type" of player. Which isn't to say he's a bad player - just not their type. And if that's the case, then they may very well entertain trade offers for him, and sign/draft another RT. Doesn't have to be the first round either. Just someone that more fits the bill (nasty run blocker).

But w/ SJack gone and Isaiah Pead/Daryl Richardson totally different types of backs, they may not need the nasty run blocker. They currently have 4 6'+ guys on the team and Chris Givens the burner. Get those guys you need protection and the OL can do that. If Rodger stays even for one year, I bet they pass more than run this year.

Possibly. But clearly they don't value Saffold as much as they do Jake Long, and Saffold was actually (statistically) the better LT last year. That could be attributed to a great many things, including Jake's injury history, but Saffold's skill set clearly wasn't the most important thing to Fisher, et al - IMO. Seems like they wanted someone who could fill the leadership role, was bigger and stronger, and more adept at run blocking. Since that makes Saffold expendable in a sense, then maybe they'd entertain bringing in someone cheaper and more ideally suited to what they like out of their tackles and trade Saffold.

Maybe.

Couple of things here. After Jake Long was brought on board I seem to recall Snead saying something to the effect that if you were looking at a tackle, maybe you now decide if he could slide inside and play guard. They still need to make cap room to sign the draft class and any other FAs they may still want. I could see them drafting a RT and plugging him in at RG for a year so he would be available if or when Saffold departs. Dahl may become a cap casualty after the draft if they're satisfied with who they get.

Maybe, they also could've wanted bookends and Jake + Rodger > Rodger + Barry Richardson (obviously). I also don't know who would trade a high pick for an OT going to RT in his final year.
