I am older than you and have never watched what they call "Pro Wrestling" in the last 40 years, so I don't hear what the current narrative is about the reality of what they do.
Maybe that's why you don't "get it"? I mean, if you haven't watched it in 40 years, how do you know that you wont enjoy it?
For me, at 51 years old, I have gone through phases with WWE, where I'll be interested for a while but drop off for a couple years. (Like now) Its entertainment, pure and simple. I don't think it ever is represented as "real", just entertainment.
That said, my 13 year old is getting back in to it, so that might lead me back.

i watched as a young tyke, (8 or 9) and always rooted for the "bad" guys. (thus beginning a long career of rooting for the "losing" teams. regardless, i've kept an eye on wrestling off and on (rowdy roddy piper was as funny as advertised by my college cohorts) but even at a young age i realized something was up (or overly impressed that a wrestler was so strong his face wouldnt bruise even after being punched by another strong wrestler). that didnt stop the entertainment value , as someone else noted................funny that a "sport" wouldnt keep records of the wrestlers Wins. Losses. Ties. etc.
forward to the "attitude era" and watching stone cold steve austin was like watching the wolverine movie Logan. wow. they swear. they flip off the boss. they have professional food fights in cafeterias and grocery stores. that's some funny shit right there. stone cold and the rock provided some great entertainment relief from the "real" world. between throwing the Rock's intercontinental belt into the hudson (with appropriate diver equipment provided --- in case the Rock had "to go deep" and the Rock continuing to refer to Stone Cold as "texas trailer trash" and telling him which object he could pick up, turn sideways and shove straight up his "candy ass", i got more than a few laughs from the weekly shows.
once they moved on to other things then the entertainment part did for me as well. it served its purpose and still does as shown by john oliver's show that revealed the WWE hauled in 980+ million dollars last year and has a BILLION followers on social media. THAT is not fake boys and girls.

link to last week tonight with john oliver's wwe show.

after tim donaghy's nonsense was uprooted and became public one suddenly has to wonder how much of "real" sports isnt fictionalized any more. there's a lot of money involved in sporting events and with money you get greed. i'll leave that alone as i'm sure its been covered by a thread on this site somewhere.

on a side note, my grandmother took wrasslin pretty serious. i guess grandpa took her to a card that featured gorgeous george on it. and when the other wrestler was "cheating" and "hurting" him, granny took it into her own powers to heckle the ref for doing such a fine job of catching him. so much so that her beer was seen flying through the air into said referee's facial area. needless to say, grandma was escorted out and asked to never return.

basically wrestling is like many things in this world. if it helps one "get away" from life's nonsense , even for 2-3 hours, to me that's worth it. just like a movie (without the $14.50 tickets and $8 popcorn prices). or a sporting event, or a 5k race, or a medieval renaissance festival. the list is endless. enjoy your lives while you can. no one knows what happens at the finish line, and of those that do, they arent here to tell us. enjoy.

Well, the same reason that I know I still don’t like Asparagus because the times I tried to eat it, it made me hurl? Granted, it may have changed..

I was watching before those guys. Dad told me I think for a couple of reasons. My Great Grandmother was really into pro wrestling and she'd cuss this or that wrestler, English style "Bloody, this person and bloody that person!" It's funny when I look back upon it that she'd get so passionate about it, because she thought it was real. They were my Dad's favorite Grandparents (both were born in London in 1894 and I knew them in the mid 1970's). My Dad told me as an aside, that "you know that's fake, right?"
At first I argued with him "It has to be real." But then I found out that it wasn't. I felt tricked and ticked. He might have told me because it was sad to him that his Grandparents (especially Grandma) was tricked into her 80's about it and didn't want me to turn out being that way. Same with roller derby. (Some of you my not know about the LA TBirds vs the NY Bombers! lol)

My Dad's parents were the same way. I grew up with the generation that included Chief Jay Strongbow, Ivan Putski, Nikolai Volkoff, Fuji and Tanaka, Haystacks Calhoun, Bobo Brazil, Big Cat Ernie Ladd, and the legend Bruno Samartino.
It was a treat when Andre made an appearance. The managers did most of the talking. Lou Albano, Freddie Blassie, and The Grand Wizard. Between wrestling, watching Ultraman, and Emergency, we had a blast.

I don’t get when non-wrestling fans say “they don’t get it” because wrestling is scripted and predetermined.

It’s like “duh.” Nobody is trying to pull the wool over anyone’s eyes. If you’re older than five, you know WWE is not an actual sporting event.

Yes, wresting is scripted. The Avengers is also scripted. Sylvester Stallone never beat anyone up. James Bond is fake.

See where I’m going with this? It’s entertainment. It’s spectacle and glamour. It’s cheesy. Just like your favorite movie.

“How can you like something that’s fake?”
What, you don’t watch movies or tv? Just read the newspaper and watch sports?

And that’s before we get into how these guys are on the road 300 days a year, throwing themselves around on a hard canvas, trying to talk up crowd after crowd, without the benefit of being labeled an “employee”.

Cut out the crap.

The Walking Dead advertises itself as a non-fiction movie, ect. like Pro Wrestling says its real? I am older than you and have never watched what they call "Pro Wrestling" in the last 40 years, so I don't hear what the current narrative is about the reality of what they do. I KNOW that it was presented as a factual contest when I used to watch it, and that's utter BS to me. I'd rather watch real wrestling like greco-roman wrestling than Pro Wrestling. Therefore, It was dumbfounding to me that sports fans that like ourselves who like real contests of skill, also like fake contests That didn't compute with me, so sue me. Calling it some sort of scripted drama entertainment show at least makes sense to me.

Fun fact: the country’s early fight promoters tried to sell Greco-Roman wrestling to audiences like they did boxing. Problem was, nobody wanted to pay to watch guys laying on each other for an hour. So the promoters started paying wrestlers a little extra for “making things exiting”. And professional wrestling as we know it was born.

I grew up watching WWF. I never cared for WCW. I, To this day will not refer to it as WWE.

I watched through the late 80s and all of the 90’s, into the Attitude Era. Once they split up into Raw and Smackdown...I lost it. I never watched another moment. Also, that was about the time I learned that I was of the “Vagina getting age” and that just seemed much more important lol

Funny, that's when I started watching it. 2002-2006 were some of the best stories and in-ring action. It had a more underground feel to it, especially Smackdown!.

2007-2013 were really, really hard to get through; I wasn't a hardcore watcher really. It got good again around 2014 to current.
