Obo has impressed me in his first real season playing significant snaps and he's getting more and more comfortable. I truly hope he's okay and it's not a big injury to his arm today.

With the way he and the medic was holding his left arm, and that they left the field instantly ... I'm almost sure his injury is gonna be bad news. :(

Reeder should be a role player. I still think he is a massive liability trying to cover RB's out of the backfield.

Staley plays the same basic scheme as the Hawks. But unlike the Hawks Staley doesn't play a SAM OLB which has been what Ebukam was developed to play. Staley is wasting him and in doing so has left the strongside open on most plays or he tries to compensate with a DB. Too many times he's got Ramsey covering the flats which is a complete waste of an elite CB. Then he sticks "I can't cover" Hill trying to cover the deep zone.

I personally think he's wasting the talent on the team trying to make everyone fit his peg holes instead of scheming around the strengths of the players he has. You saw a perfect example of what I'm saying against Buffalo. That loss is on Staley and his stupidly structured scheme. His bend not break philosophy allowed the Bills to control that last drive and eat the clock in the process. That is exactly what I've been saying about what to expect when the Rams run into a seriously good offense....say like GB's. An offense like KC will rip up the Ram's defense. Their passing attack is largely driven by YAC so allowing them easy short completions would be complete folly. Staley is squandering one of the best if not the best secondary in the NFL. This defense should absolutely dominate and for the most part it hasn't. That is 100% on Staley.

There is a sizeable gap between your opinion on Staley and the way his D has been playing.

I am loving what he's doing.

This goes back to what I said on another thread. It’s difficult to gauge this team based on the games we’ve played so far.

The Giants gave the offense trouble for a full game. The Bills gave the offense trouble for a full half.
Then on defense, the Bills racked up a lot of points in the first half.

Old is right in that they have not played great offenses yet. It is difficult to judge the defense based on what it’s done so far.

One thing we know for sure so far is that mobile QBs give the Rams trouble. Daniel Jones and Josh Allen both sustained long drives against this defense. So maybe after they play the Seahawks, Cardinals and Patriots we will have a better idea if the defense improved enough to handle a mobile QB. But ultimately the teams to beat are the Chiefs and Ravens. So if the defense struggles against the two division rivals it can be assumed that they likely will struggle against the two teams on top of the hill.

All of that is true, but we can only go what we know and how they are performing. They are a new squad with kinks to work out early, but they are doing the #1 thing you can ask them to: make the necessary adjustments and then make the plays to stifle their opponent in the 2nd half.

We've played almost a 3rd of the season and while we haven't played world beaters, we've done what we should do to bad offenses and with the exception of a 3rd and 22 in Buffalo, they have been good.

I do love what Staley is doing thus far and I expected the D to take a little bit to really get comfortable in the new scheme but they seem to be on the same page and really flying around.
Considering the question marks and quality/depth of our LBers, I feel like they are exceeding expectations.

Its not that they don't have issues and I dont mean to suggest they are already great or even above criticism... it's just that this one poster keeps doubling down on a POV that is ignoring the results.
As another poster said, if they weren't watching the games and only going by what OND is posting, they would assume we are being blown out and losing games because of our D.
They would have no idea that our D is #1 in 2nd half scoring and it isn't close.
Sure, the NFCE has given our D a great opportunity to exploit bad offenses, but like every very good defense, they have jumped on the chance and have capitalized.
I do totally agree that we don't know how the whole season will play out or how they will fare against great offensive teams and its too early to crown them.... but for a new coordinator and young squad, they have done more than enough to deserve some credit and compliments.

The Rams will get better, especially on D as they get they the younger players integrated into the new scheme. But make no mistake: the Rams are a really good team already, and on both sides of the ball. This team imo compares well to the 2018 Super Bowl squad.

We know what the offense can do. We may not have Gurley any more, with his big play and scoring ability, but Akers and Henderson are fast and capable replacements. The line has been great, and they have already played against some tough defensive fronts. The receivers are really outstanding. Goff is better than ever. The scheming and coaching from McVay and O'Connell are as good as it gets.

On D we seem sometimes to forget that the squad starts with Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsay. Having two such truly great players on the line-- the GOAT on the line-- and in the secondary at the same time is a decisive and unparalled advantage in this league. They impose real limits on key strengths of any offense. The pass rush and the secondary are leveraging off each other to cut off big plays downfield. (Seattle will be our biggest challenge because of Wilson, but we can handle it.)

We know about AD. No qb is going to hold the ball very long while looking downfield with AD coming after him. The Athletic did a survey of NFl execs a few weeks ago and concluded that Ramsay is widely regarded as the best CB in the league. Ramsay is playing like it. He can match up against any receiver, outside or inside, or any tight end. Also an intimidating tackler.

We have other really good defensive players, such as D Will at CB, Fuller and Jefferson at safety, Floyd and Brockers and Fox up front. The rest of the D has lots of younger talent that will step forward. The D is also respectably limiting the run. We are starting to show that depth across the board and good schemes can cover perceived weaknesses at linebacker and on the edge. The coaching is outstanding. We are just a little slow in recognizing how good Staley really is, but I think that will change as we see his schemes unfold game to game and the players get up to speed with them.

The stats are early but essentially the Rams are Top 10 or Top 5 in most or all significant categories on both sides of the ball. Rams with 5 games played are essentially second in passing yards allowed, third in total yards, third in point differential, tied for first in sacks, etc.

The bottom line is that this team has really great balance in terms of its O and D. Either one can win games. When you are this good on both sides of the ball, you have a team that will make the playoffs and threaten any team in the league when they get there. We'll see how the Rams turn out this year, but they are in the process of making a serious run.

Rams this year are also REALLY fun to watch. Maybe as much as McVay's first two years, but I'm enjoying them possibly even more as a distraction from everything else going on.

I think we are watching it the same way my Ram brother from another mother

Welp.
We better enjoy Staley while we have him.
Its only a matter if time before another team with a HC vacancy comes knocking.

Especially if he is the football genius that McVay gushes about. Which really sucks.

I dont expect to hold on to either McConnel or Staley to stick around too long. It is kind of dumb for NFL teams to jump on first year coordinators or coordinators based on their first successful season. Some of that credit has to fall to the head coach. But Green Bay seems to have hit it big with LaFluer. So some teams GM will be all over Staley this January, if the Rams defense continues to improve.

Maybe McVay should down play. Staley’s contributions and take more of the credit:biggrin:

I'm hoping guys like Bieneme and Saleh are taken and teams take a year off from poaching our staff.
