Last year we knew we were close, hoped the secondary would be masked by the rush.

This year we have a team with no real glaring weakness. Just need health to favor us. I think we're gonna win home field in the NFC, and we're gonna have it through the playoffs, and we're gonna win it all.

One thing it insinuates is the Rams were not impressed by Bain in the draft. Or there was something they didn't like about him, be it his arm length or the off field side.

Lets pretend that he was evaluated to be as good as Jared Verse, and even though their games aren't identical, lets just say we get Jared Verse production from him - I think we can all agree that'd be a big win at pick 13, and it would be tough to expect more than that.

That doesn't really make us a better team this year. It would in the future after some DL talent walks....but I wouldn't have drafted him unless he was going to be better than Verse. So I can see them liking him just fine, but without providing an actual upgrade, IMO that pick wouldn't have made sense with where we are now.

Bain was never in the picture. The Rams had already decided they were getting Garrett to pair with Verse. Unfortunately the Browns would only trade Garrett if they received Verse in the deal. So the Rams did what they had to do.

Anybody else think it's possible that finding out he was going to lose Verse was what McVay was so grumpy about during the draft?

It would explain both why he was so uncharacteristically, uncontrollably upset and also why he couldn't talk about it...

I think these scenarios being discussed proves why Simpson was an important pick. If they had a fuy like Simpson on the roster last year, they maybe go after Sauce Gardner at the trade deadline. However, knowing they needed a QB, they were hesitant to give up a #1 pick or picks.

Now they can move high picks as they do seem confident in Simpson. If they weren't, they would not have gone all in on Garrett.

Never thought about it but it's possible.

The Rams upgraded at blindside edge by adding Garrett. During the big games at the end of the year, our pass rush was not very effective, and our secondary got exposed. There was a need in their minds to upgrade their rush, clearly.

So my point was very simple: if Bain had been very highly regarded by the Rams, maybe they draft him, move Verse to the strong side of the formation where he is probably better served, and then take a project QB midrounds. From there Young in rotation is very strong and the defense would look very good, though not nearly as good as they look now of course.

But the Rams didn't do that, so clearly they were not fans of either his arm length, his upside overall, or something off field re: fit with the locker room.

Or they liked the upside of Simpson more and what having him, at that position, on the roster meant to the organization.

Possible. But I was just ruminating on what it insinuates re: the edge who was on the board for us as an option there at 13.
