I’m worried about what he might fetch in FA as well. I’m interested in the Rams signing Barr if the price is right. I honestly wish the Rams would have signed Todd Davis last year. He’s a very similar player to Barr in terms of his strengths at weaknesses. Although, I think Davis would have been a better fit because of his familiarity with Wade’s defense. Plus, he got a fairly affordable contract from Denver.
If a team overpays for one player in FA then it limits them on going after other players. You can't stop that from happening but you can accentuate the positive of playing for the Rams - sunny southern CA, new stadium, competitive team, great coaches, etc.

Which is why I wish the Rams would have signed Todd Davis. He has half the salary that Barron has, and he would have really helped the Rams run defense. I think his $5 million a year would be cheaper than what Barr will get as well.

Looking at things realistically, we've been avoiding signing guys who count against us in the comp pick formula of late. With Suh, Joyner, and others on their way out, I imagine we do the same again this year. If we do so, we could land two or three comp picks in the 3rd to 5th rounds.

Accordingly, I'm going to focus on guys who could be released. Of that group, I like the idea of Dontari Poe/Marcell Dareus at NT (depending on which one is released) or Justin Houston at 3-4 OLB.

Resign our own.
Preston Smith, CJ Mosley.
A Rams LB corp of Fowler/Littleton/a warm body/Smith could be pretty formidable.
Or Fowler/Littleton/Mosley/warm body could be good as well.
I don't think the Rams could do both.
I would like to see a couple of solid vet types for the DL. Not big names with big salaries but solid, 3/4 role guys that can stand up vs the run.
Having a real DL rotation would be helpful as well.
Signing Smith and resigning Fowler gives the Rams a potential good outside pass rush. A real DL rotation helps vs the run. Using the first round pick on the best pass rushing/playmaking/scheme fit DL could give the Rams a good mix while improving vs the run.
Like I've said before if the Rams develop a consistent defense that holds teams around low 20s points per game, this is a 12 win for an extended period of time.

I really wanted T. Whitehead (who signed with Oakland) or Davis last year. Either would have been better than Barron as they would have been there.
I've soured a bit on Davis as a starter. Still like Whitehead a lot as a two run LB who can play three down if need be.

Why have you soured on Davis? Because he’s more of a two down backer?

No.
He just didn't hold up that well vs the run in Bronco games I saw this year. That said, it was only a couple of games so I could be well off with that.
I still think he can be a solid starting LB.

I think he’s a solid LBer, but definitely nothing amazing. I think his salary is reflective of what you get; a solid but unspectacular player.
