Snead believes Gurley can return to 2017 and 2018 form

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – By the standards of 2017 and 2018, the 2019 season in some ways did not feature the same production Rams fans are used to seeing out of running back Todd Gurley.

However, that doesn't mean Gurley can't bounce back.

During an hour-long conversation with Rams beat writers Tuesday morning, General Manager Les Snead expressed confidence that Gurley, who just completed his fifth NFL season, can return to the levels showcased in his third and fourth seasons.

"I do know this," Snead said. "Personally, I think we've seen players have years that were less than the past, come back and actually get back to where they were. He's still a young football player."

After surpassing 1,200 yards rushing in each of the last two seasons, the 25-year-old Gurley rushed for just 857 yards this season. He also carried the ball only 223 times in 2019 after surpassing 250 in each of the prior two years.

Snead attributed the decline partly to the changes along the offensive line due to injury along with opposing defenses placing a greater emphasis of stopping the Rams' rushing attack.

"What we all know in sports, if we were so successful at those explosive runs in 17 and 18, and we saw people start trying to calm it down in 18, you're not just going to sit back and do the same thing," Snead said. "It's a combination of what we have going on (and) what we need to fix. And give the enemy credit for trying to take Gurley away. That's obviously a compliment to him."

Even in the wake teams scheming to limit Gurley, the former Georgia star still reached double-digit rushing touchdowns for the third straight season with 12, moving him into a tie with Marshall Faulk for first on the franchise's career rushing touchdowns list (60).

"There were some runs when he scored touchdowns where I think we all felt the physics that Todd brings to the game," Snead said.

When it comes to examples of running backs rebounding statistically, Snead indeed has personal experience to draw upon.

During his time as a pro scout in the Falcons' personnel department, the team signed Warrick Dunn to a lucrative six-year deal in March 2002. An injury-shortened second season with Atlanta limited Dunn to 125 carries for 672 yards and three touchdowns after posting 230 for 927 and seven the year prior. However, he responded by rushing 265 times for 1,106 yards and nine touchdowns in his third. He would surpass 1,100 rushing yards in each of the next two seasons as well.

Coincidentally, Dunn pulled off a similar feat with his first team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The eventual three-time Pro Bowler posted 248 carries for 1,133 yards and eight touchdowns in 2000 after 195 for 616 and zero touchdowns in 1999.

It's enough evidence for Snead to feel good about Gurley's ability to replicate his past production in 2020.

"You take his 17 and 18, there's an element of, 'Wow, how are you going to keep that up?' Not many players are going to be able to do that," Snead said. "But majority of the time, if you go back and look at the data, players do come back and and can get to a higher level than they were in their down years."

I remember Todd Gurley looking remarkably similar the last time he had a trash o-line.

Funny how that works.

Gurley just isn't very effective between the 20s without a decent run blocking unit in front of him.

It's the Offensive Line Stupid.....Rams need to be bigger and nasty and you only have to look at the Tennessee Titan Offensive Line with envy. I understand the Rams are up against the cap, but utilize draft capital to draft Offensive Linemen and maybe add one in free agency at LG (Quinton Spain) and Todd Gurley might not have that 3rd gear anymore, but he can still pound the rock and I also believe with a new RB Coach and not his friend Skip Peete, that Gurley can be challenged next season especially catching the football, which he seemed to regress this season.

It’s obvious Gurley lost some of the burst that he had in 2017 and most of 2018. However....fix the interior OL run blocking (adding at least one stud OG/C) and Gurley and Henderson will be a very good thunder and lightning combo.

Todd isn't a creative runner. He's a one cut slasher with power and speed. He's not gonna juke 2 LB's in the backfield and break off a 15 yard run like Barry Sanders. He needs a crease to build up that momentum and then he can use his power. Give him a couple of steps and he's a load to bring down. If you can get to him before that, he's an easy target.

Stupid - lmao

All good, got to love it !!! With respect you are in to something with Skip Pete !! Time to go, but trading will help in a lot of ways. Imo ??

The offensive line - yes was not all that great, but to say they have not used draft capital on O”Line is far fetched!! I honestly don’t believe The Rams even draft an offensive line in 2020 ?? Call me crazy, call me stupid ?? Will see what happens.

I think The Rams played there Cards to Trade Todd Gurley ??? He will be doing commercials in another Uni & not The Rams New Jersey’s ?? New York is set at RB, so maybe Miami ??

I don’t see the power anymore!! Then again TG30 has surprised me many of times.

2020 - let the scouts find a fresh stable of RB’s !! Yes on a new RB coach as well. Time to move on from the Snisher Day’s !!

I took the "Stupid" line from the Clinton campaign of 1992 "It's the Economy Stupid." Nothing personal, just focusing on the main issue with this team. Well, I hope you're right about Gurley being traded to Miami, which I think is the perfect destination...I will disagree with you on the draft, IMO, the Rams first pick in the 2nd round (maybe after they trade around again) will be an offensive linemen and they might go back to the University of Washington (Taylor Rapp) with Center Nick Harris or LT Trey Adams.

I won't call you crazy or stupid.
I will say our O-lines run blocking was far, far away from "not all that great".
That's a huuuge understatement. Our run blocking was beyond awful.
Draft capital invested in a position group doesn't equal a serviceable unit. (See Rams D-line 2000-2008)
Gurley looked like a blown pick in his second season behind a weak run blocking line. If we had traded him then it would have been a huge mistake.

Gurley can't do it all by himself like Faulk. He requires more run blocking and initial push.
He might never be the same guy he was in 2017 but could still be a great weapon for this team. Nobody is going to give us enough for him and we don't have another proven starter on the team so I wouldn't go all in on trading him because you might just end up dissapointed because he is still a Ram or you could get your way and regret it as we trade away a Rams great for a busted pick and still have a crappy run game.
Gurley has been too good in the red zone alone for me to want him gone.

After watching his highlight vids from previous years and then watching this year. It's safe to say that gurely isn't the punishing runner he used to be. Hes still very good but he'll go out of bounds now rather than punishing his opponents. Which is fine but obviously hes probably trying to prolong his career since is one of those side line hits that messed up that knee in the first place.

He still looks just as fast but some of his cuts aren't as crisp.
70% oline
20% gurely
10% mcvay

good comparable

I think we know that 30 is a downhill back that can still turn the corner.

Like he did against the Hags and Whiners.

He never was a RB that ran around behind the LOS juking people.

Let’s prioritize the OL and give 30 some damn carries and not just an inflated snap count from all the pass pro.
