Kind of Predictable (shock jock sports media controversy)It does gets attention like it or not.....

I have realized over the years that some of the more popular/television viewed media Icons go against the grain to keep their brand fresh and controversial.

It works for ratings and discussions but I know many of them just go the opposite way of reality to keep the crowd interested and bickering about their statements etc..

On shows with two debating sports figures, the producer actually assigns them a position to argue for. It's not (just) that a particular shock jock wants to create controversy, it is literally their job from the network.

Of course, some are much better at maintaining rationality while arguing positions they may not fully agree with.

Skippy Useless at it again, huh?

My Useless story:

I moved down to DFW in 1991 from the NY Metropolitan area. I remember when WFAN first hit the airwaves. I listened to "Mike and The Mad Dog" (Mike Francesa and Chris Russo) on my way home every day.

Now...Francesa was/is an egotistical blow-hard BUT... he knows his sports. Russo was basically there for entertainment. So, I knew these guys well.

Circa 1994, KTCK ("The Ticket") went on the air as the first "all sports" radio station in DFW:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KTCK_(AM)

One of it's first hosts was... you guessed it - Skippy Useless
"The Ticket's original lineup consisted of Skip Useless, Curt Menefee, Mike Rhyner and Greg Williams, Chuck Cooperstein, and George Dunham and Craig Miller (broadcaster). Usaeless was the first host to inaugurate the station's sports format."

Well, a few days after Useless hits the airwaves, he starts talking about the NCAA Men's Basketball Tourney and how he saw a piece where Francesa was talking about the teams.

It was early in Useless's career and he was just honing his craft... but he was all over the place and saying Francesa doesn't know sports, much less anything about college basketball.

I call the station and got through... told Useless that Francesa will forget more about sports in his lifetime, than he will ever learn.

Well, good to see that remains the case today. Just wants to spew his useless crap.
He doesn't want to learn about sports... he wants to do the laziest thing in the media:
Make up shyte and stir pots.

Hated him (and I rarely use that word) in 1994... I refuse to spend 5 seconds watching/listening to him now.

It's funny to hear the hosts on The Ticket today... to a man, they all hate him and make fun whenever his name comes up. They cite the very things we are... no sports knowledge, just schtick.

Skippy Useless... if you see the face on TV or hear the voice on audio, do yourself a favor and immediately turn of the device!! You'll save some brain cells that way!

Thru 3 games, Rams had #1 Defense.
31 other teams each played 3 games and the result was the Rams ranked #1 on D.
On a short week, against a talented offense on an NFC contender with its back against the wall, missing 1.5% of our starting corners, we gave up 31 in a shoot out.

We more or less smothered their run game. That must have been a goal of Wade Phillips and on that front, mission accomplished.
There was holding by both lines, but the way it flashed on every Viq drop back was surprising.
Honestly, this game isn't nearly as close if the refs had attempted to call and enforce a clean game in the trenches.

Yes, our D has some issues, but its also been brilliant at times too, and through the 1st qtr of the season they have been pretty damn great.

Also, if Ficken makes that kick we win by double digits. If the ball Sheilds deflected wasnt somehow caught anyways, its a different looking game. I know those things happen but this game very easily could have been not that close.

Somehow whatever the story it comes back to the Cowboys and this was his attempt to make them relevant. The Rams defense was terrible but the cowboys might be top 5 which, using skip logic, that makes them almost equals.
Nothing turns out like you expected though, look at the nfc powers, the Eagles are trying to get straightened out, the Saints don’t seem the same and neither do the Vikes. So, if not the rams then who?

This is how phoney you'll see the pundits have to be; the rams won't beat anyone as good as the vikes over the next 3 weeks but when they're 7 and 0, he'll have to admit the rams are not only legit but probable SB champs.

The regular season is about laying points on people and racking up enough wins to get to the real season. Postseason survival requires defense though, and teams with strong defensive production in the regular season tend to do pretty well once things tighten up a bit on the way to the SB. So there is some truth in saying the Rams are not there yet in terms of being the team they need to be in order to run the table.

Defense has to get better. I think it will, if we get Talib back in a reasonable time. But it is a concern, and I have no problem recognizing that.

Good thing here, though, is that we're 4-0 and in the driver's seat for home field. And there's time for the staff to get these guys settled down if they can avoid further injury and get some guys back to who they were.

Oh and all that aside, yeah, Bayless can suck it. Dude is a douchenozzle.
Agreed, generally. However, I do offer a counterpoint. How many points did we rack up on the eagles last year? They won the big game. No need to forget how absolutely dominant our D was the first 3 weeks. This game was on a short week against an angry Vikings team that was not looking past us the way i feel that they were Buffalo. The D came up big when it really mattered. I, for one, will wait to judge how tight or lose the D is for a few more weeks so that we have a bigger sample size to judge it by.

How come Skip didn't bring up his favorite quarterback rating? He just swears by that ESPN QBR. Well, Goff had a 94.9 rating against the Vikes. What's the matter Skip?

Goff now ranks 3rd for the season with an 84.6. His beloved Dak Prescott is at a lowly 36.4. Haha

To me creepiest part of segment was during the opening when Shannon praised/compared himself to Farrakhan.

I don't call any grown man by the name of Skip.

I know a guy named Skip. He was a heavy drinker.

I also new three brothers named Stack, Traci, and Kim. I figured it was a Boy named Sue thing, but it turns out their mom always hoped for a girl. I also went to school with a kid named Kip. If I were him I think I'd have used my middle name, when I grew up.

I was thinking this too after the game.

They moved the ball on our defense. That’s worth watching. But, the game never felt like it was getting away from us.

I know a guy named Skip. He was a heavy drinker.

Was never a nickname guy, I wanted to learn everyone's given name and commit to memory and that plays into the equation. I realize George W. Bush used nicknames to memorize people, but I always did it by their given names....A great guy in the military (Aircraft Mechanic) went by Skip, when I met him and he introduced himself as "Skip." I replied that my name is Dennis and asked him his given name and he replied "Howard." I said back, "Nice to meet you Howard." He replied, "It's a pleasure Boss." That was back in 1985 and we have kept in touch with wife's and family and till this day, I call him "Howard" and he calls me "Boss." It hasn't stopped.

Funny story. You use his given name and he gives you the nickname.

Skip is the worst, and will never be better than that. I don't feel sorry for him, it's like Jerry Jones comparing the Cowboys to the Rams.
