sure , part of that is just longevity , but there is a good reason why a coach has longevity

crazy to think , I've only known two head coaches at Iowa , since I was a little kid in the late 70's

Hayden Fry for 1979 - 1998 and Kirk Ferentz from 1999 - present , thats only 2 coaches in the last 46 years

Not only are the uniforms of the Iowa and the Pittsburgh Steelers the same colors, but their coaching tenures too. The Steelers have had three Head Coaches since 1969 and as @IowaRam so eloquently communicated, the Hawkeyes have had only two Head Coaches since 1979.

Ferentz came to Iowa City after being the OL Coach for (you guessed it) of the Pittsburgh Steelers. I was very impressed with Ferentz because he had multiple opportunities to move to higher profile programs and the NFL too, however, he loved Iowa and chose to stay there. Ferentz is a throwback Head Coach and over the years his offenses have been compared to root canal, but his teams are always well coached and they don't get many 4 or 5 star recruits, so Ferentz and his staff always have to coach up the personnel.

Congrats to Coach Ferentz, truly an outstanding Head Coach and even a better human being.
