Vice in general should be legal

I'm thinking we need to abolish the damn commerce clause.. It's caused nothing but problems from the Federal level. Just saying.

Would save me many many hours of reading. I probably spend 8 hours a week, alone, on a bunch of Justices bitching about how each other interpreted that damn clause.

http://rare.us/story/some-republicans-are-trying-to-bring-back-the-online-gambling-ban-bill/

Some Republicans are trying to bring back the online gambling ban bill

Reports National Journal:

House lawmakers Wednesday are reintroducing a bill that would effectively ban betting sites in the U.S.

The Restoration of America’s Wire Act, spearheaded by Rep. Jason Chaffetz, would “restore” a decades-old federal ban on some gambling operations by extending it to include Internet gaming. Chaffetz, a Utah Republican, is introducing the bill with six GOP cosponsors and the backing of one Democrat, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii. The three-page measure is the same as the one Chaffetz introduced last year.

An aide for Sen. Lindsey Graham confirmed that the South Carolina Republican also intends to reintroduce a version of the bill, though he said a timetable was unclear. The companion bills debuted last spring but never gained much traction.

Chaffetz and Graham tried this last year and it didn’t go anywhere, as National Journal noted.

Enacting an internet gambling ban is a longtime dream of billionaire Republican donor Sheldon Adelson, who made his fortune with offline, old-fashioned Las Vegas gambling. National Journal continues:

Among the online ban’s most influential backers is Sheldon Adelson, a billionaire casino magnate who—via massive campaign contributions—wields considerable clout among Republicans.

Adelson has been vocally pushing the morality argument for years… Adelson’s detractors argue that the wealthy political donor—whose financing kept Newt Gingrich’s 2012 presidential campaign afloat for months before Adelson threw his support behind eventual GOP nominee Mitt Romney—is singularly motivated by a desire to protect his brick-and-mortar casino empire from digital competitors. “Mr. Adelson, who is perhaps best known for using his enormous wealth to advance a pro-war foreign policy, is now using his political influence to turn his online competitors into criminals,” former Rep. Ron Paul wrote in an op-ed last November.

Ron Paul’s Campaign for Liberty is asking people to call their congressman and urge them to sign a letter to House Speaker John Boehner opposing the ban, an effort led by New Jersey Republican, Rep. Frank LoBiondo.

Not exactly the most impartial of articles there.

I don't really have an opinion one way or another... I'm just saying.

I went to Newbury races yesterday and the most surprising part of the day wasn't having 3 winners but seeing some bloke walking around in a Rams baseball cap. It's very rare to see that over here. Good day all round, Tony McCoy announcing his retirement was a bit of a shocker though.

How you figure? Just asking.. You a neocon? Doesn't matter if you are, but I can't see doing this. I say tax it and bring it into the regular economy instead of underground economy.

The article pretty clearly implied the goal of an Internet gambling ban was solely to help a donor who owned brick-and-mortar casinos.

Those kind of conclusions are fine for an op-ed piece. They really shouldn't be in a straight news piece.

Actually I think it is. Adelson just proves how crony capitalism works. He's protecting his own interests. Ron Paul and etc want a more free market. What's wrong with that?

It's the truth.. Adelson built his wealth on brick and mortar gambling. Now he's afraid of competition. Crony capitalism big time here. he's trying to pay lawmakers to protect his empire. What's he so afraid of? He needs to get with the program and bring his operations online? Just saying.

Go to the 12 minute mark in this show.. Wheeler talks about legalized gambling here. I was wrong when I said Stern earlier. It's Adam Silver the new commissioner. Shows how much I pay attention to the NBA.. lol That said, the new MLB commish is in favor of legalized gambling.. It's in this radio segment..

Fast forward to the 12 minute mark...

Those are perfectly valid opinions. All I'm saying is that they're not facts (specifically, what the politicians' "real" motivation in this is not a verifiable fact), and as such don't belong in impartial reporting, which this article seems to pass itself off as. As stated, they'd be absolutely fine for an op ed piece.

I don't really have a dog in this fight. It's just I used to work for a school paper, and they drilled this into our heads. That's all.

Well that's the way the world works.. Businesses pay off politicians. It's called Crony Capitalism. One reason Govt has so many regulations is to protect big businesses that a small business can't afford to adhere to in most cases. If you think the USA is a free market, then you might want to take a hard look at it. It isn't.

I don't want to get political here though. And we're going that route so please refrain, as I will. I posted the article for flv.. He posted the article about the one UK company that wouldn't take bets in the USA because of the wire act. I posted it to show him the wire act was possibly repealed. It was, or else these old arse politicians wouldn't be bringing it up again. :)

Peace..

Does it happen? Sure. But it's still only an opinion that that is the motivation here. This opinion can still be true, but to assert it IS in a news article necessarily means it's not impartial. And that'd be true whether or not I agreed with it.

Now that said, we can now refrain. :)

Boffo the only problem with your banter.. You've taken away the discussion of the Wheeler show I posted above. Just saying. :)

And I don't get it.. If you have no dog in this fight as you have said.. Why are you posting? It's the issue of gambling. Not about whether a piece is reporting or an op-ed. Damn.. I wouldn't be hijacking your thread and never have.
