Athleticism, pulling, getting out in space sounds alot like a guard to me. Thats fine if the coaches think that is where they can get the most out of him. McVay had Scherff, a top 5 pick who played tackle in college playing guard at a pro bowl level. I trust Saffold way more at LT even with his injury issues

............I don't think Boudreau understood how to coach Greg. JMO.
Yes it will be very interesting seeing what a new OL coach can do with our current cadre of signed OL'ers in comparison to Boudreau. It was also interesting that McVay kept Andy Dickerson for his 6th season on as Aaron Kromer assistant. Andy should be able to convey a real good amount of info on Greg Robinson who was bench two different times with in one month.

In addition John Fassel was retained as the ST coach. John is highly regarded character through out the NFL & here in this forum, bench Robinson as interim HC. Then John followed up & stated to suggest that GRob should be moved to another OL post in the future in a attempt to get GRob to be effective starter. Robinson may not have returned to the LT post if Rodger Saffold had not injured & broke his hand starting in place of the bench Robinson & at the same time the fast degrading status of Rob Havenstein @ RT forced Fassel's hand to return Robinson to the starting lineup (something that I believe John did not want to do).

Here's a list of 13 youthful OL'ers including Greg Robinson that the Rams drafted or signed UDFA's since 2012 for OL coach Paul Boudreau to coach up:

Isaiah Battle
Darrell Williams
Brandon Washington
Mitchell Van Dyk
Rokevious Watkins
Barrett Jones
Demetrius Rhaney
Greg Robinson
Robert Havenstein
Jamon Brown
Andrew Donnal
Cody Wichmann
Pace Murphy

I would have a very hard time having to come with an argument that would differ from @jrry32 on Boudreau. I might come up with some weak attempt on RG/RT Andrew Donnal showing good progress from his first rookie season to last season but it would be a little short & somewhat weak. Does seem to be a pattern of these talented OL'ers entering the NFL with potential & remaining at that same skill level.

I sure would be interested in hearing from any member who has thoughts differing from me on these 13 OL'ers.

I've said it before and I'm saying it again. It appears that players that came to this team in the past played their best the first year they were there and never got better. It had to be the coaching!

I don't think Boudreau understood how to coach Greg ANYONE... JMO.
Fixed it for ya Jrry!!!

but it is also about being able to motivate a player/players to bring out the best in themselves.
The biggest component of coaching....can you motivate men/boys/women/girls....Anyone can teach or learn to teach the technical aspects of ANY skill...Can you make them go all out...day after day after day. Great post.

Glad to see McVay is taking his time...looking through the wreckage....Maybe there's still time to save Quickie...

Coulda had Jake motherfuckin Matthews. Almost as bad as the Avery/Jackson fiasco. Or the Quick/Jeffrey fuck up. Will never get over any of those.

McVay wont be the 1st to not give up on Greg Robinson.

Really not much news here, theres not alot of choices to make. He's under contract and wont be cut. Much more prudent to keep him and continue to coach him up. His FA replacement would be alot more expensive. We have other, not necesarily bigger, fish to fry here. Its the hand hand McVay was dealt. He needs to play it.

While much of this is true, although I believe this a 'BIG fish to fry, if the Rams can't trade for or find a free agent LT, i'm afraid they'll be compelled to draft one. One big problem, as explained partially in the interview, is that other than tape, our coaches can't see or talk to Robinson until camp, so a proper evaluation can't really be made until after free agency and the draft, while in camp. You are right about 'the hand McVay was dealt', as important decisions must be made about GRobs future at LT before getting a good look at him. Darrell Williams looked somewhat promising for a back-up in 2015, but his injury in camp this past season saw a huge drop-off in play prior to the injury being announced, making it next to impossible to judge his status coming off of IR. It's a tough spot to be in for the coaches, for Goff, for GRob & the cohesion of our OL. jmo.

That was my choice at the time, if we went OL.

But... It's worth pointing out Mathews had a KILLER holding penalty that pushed the Falcons out to the edge of FG range on their final drive of the Super Bowl... then came the sack of Matt Ryan and the rest is history.

Yeah, it's a prove it year for GRob.

And we can all rest assured that GRob won't be handed any starting position by this new staff. That was one of Fisher's flaws, imo. Anything GRob gets now, he will have earned the old fashioned way.

Myself, I suspect GRob's problems are between his ears. Not necessarily that he's not football smart, although that is certainly possible. More of a lack of confidence thing that causes hesitation. And maybe a lack of film room study that results in too much thinking before reacting.

Kromer should be able to figure it out rather quickly, one way or the other. If GRob is fixable, Kromer sounds like the guy to get it done. TBH, I'd be lying if I said that I was optimistic. But if Kromer can pull this off, GRob could be a stud for us for another 10 years. I'm encouraged by reading that Slater said that he could fix GRob.

It's a similar situation for Tavon, if you ask me. Loads of physical talent being wasted. Sure hope that they can tap his potential, as well.

Higbee is yet another project where I see high potential that was being wasted. Who knows how high his ceiling might be in the proper O and with quality detailed coaching? Very high, I'm guessing.

Gurley is still another potential elite weapon if deployed in the proper system and supported by an effective Goff and OL.

The above are just a few reasons that I'm excited by the arrival of this new coaching staff. Add a couple of key FA and have a solid draft and this O could be in business.

Hell, it could be a nightmare for the rest of the division if some of these guys take off.

GRob did earn the respect of ex-'9er DT Justin Smith with his sheer brute strength. One of the NFL's strongest players at the time, Justin was shocked to discover that GRob was even stronger than he was. Perhaps Greg's best role is as a pile driving guard with the athleticism to pull outside and escort Todd as a body guard on steroids. Despite the prevalent opinion that the left offensive tackle position is the most glamorous one on the OL, a super strong, super athletic guard carries as much distinction in the NFL in my humble opinion.

Rams' Sean McVay not giving up on ex-No. 2 pick Greg Robinson

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- Greg Robinson, the former No. 2 overall pick who has struggled at left tackle throughout his three-year career, remains "a big part" of the Los Angeles Rams' plans moving forward, new coach Sean McVay said Friday.

McVay did not specify whether Robinson would remain at left tackle, but he did praise his talent.

"When you see some of the things he's able to do, you see the athleticism in space when he's pulling around and using some of those perimeter schemes that they did offensively last year," McVay said during a news conference from the team facility, which followed a meet-and-greet with his new assistant coaches.

"He's a guy that we're excited to get around. That's why it's frustrating that we have to wait so long to get these guys in the building, see them on the grass."

Robinson has committed an NFL-leading 31 total penalties over the past two years. In 2016, Pro Football Focus graded him 71st among 78 qualified tackles. He was benched on two separate occasions this past season, when the entire offensive line struggled to protect rookie quarterback Jared Goff and create space for running back Todd Gurley.

There was some thought the Rams might simply part ways with Robinson, who will cost about $6.8 million toward the salary cap in 2017, but it appears the new staff is not ready to do that.

New offensive line coach Aaron Kromer, who spent the past two years with the Buffalo Bills, said Robinson has shown "flashes of skills" to remain an NFL left tackle.

"Now, why it's not consistent, I can't answer that; I don't know," Kromer said. "When I can work with a player and get my hands on him and be outside and ask him to do something and ask him to do it again and ask him to adjust something, then I know what we can do with him, how we can fit him in the offense.

But until then, on tape -- I don't know what he was told. I kind of know what he was supposed to do, but I don't know what his mindset was. I don't know it with any of them. So, I'm just looking for individual skills, like a scout."

At 6-foot-5, 332 pounds, Robinson is surprisingly athletic and has the skills to play left tackle, something that was obvious when he came out of Auburn in 2014 but just hasn't clicked yet in the NFL.

The Rams' previous offensive line coach, Paul Boudreau, spoke during the season about Robinson's inconsistent mechanics.

"He's all over the place with his feet, he's all over the place with his hands," Boudreau said. "And when he gets in trouble, when he stops his feet, he grabs, and he gets those holding penalties that you really don't need. So, he's got to concentrate on focusing on the little things."

The Rams could try moving Robinson to guard, where he can more freely utilize his power. But the best pending free agents are guards, a list that includes Kevin Zeitler, T.J. Lang and Larry Warford. Andrew Whitworth, a 35-year-old former second-round pick by the Cincinnati Bengals, is one of few notable left tackles eligible for free agency.

An in-house option at the position, besides Robinson, could be Rodger Saffold, who was perhaps the Rams' best offensive lineman last year.

Asked about transitioning to guard shortly after the Rams concluded a 4-12 season, Robinson said: "It's not really something that I'm just going to accept, because I'm so used to playing tackle. It would be hard to adjust. But if I have to adjust, that will be something that I will do."
It would be really great IF they can turn GRob into the OT we all wanted him to be, BUT I don't want to see Saffold Playing OT again!! He's Best suited at LOG!! JMHO!

Yeah I I wanted Matthews badly and thought for sure we were going to take him because Fisher coached his father.

Anyways I'd take him even with the penalty over the penalty machine that is Greg Robinson. The Falcons should of ran the clock and kicked a FG anyways since the clock was becoming the greatest enemy but that's all history now. I was yelling at my computer RUN THE BALL DAMNIT!

Time to get away from the physical freaks and get some technicians in here we can count on.
Jeff Fisher drafted raw "dumb football players"/athletic over smart/tactician.
