I didn't see this in the search. I hope it's not a duplicate.

https://theramswire.usatoday.com/2019/08/14/nfl-rams-mike-thomas-roster-battle-depth-chart/

Whether the Los Angeles Rams keep five or six wide receivers this season, it sounds like Mike Thomas will be one of them. He hasn’t yet secured a spot on the 53-man roster, but he’s on his way to doing exactly that.

Thanks to a strong few weeks of practice and an overall solid offseason, Thomas is ascending up the depth chart. He’s someone the Rams are once again excited about at wide receiver, hoping he can tap into his potential and become a contributor.

Sean McVay said on Tuesday that Thomas has done a nice job this summer, singling him out as someone who’s emerged in the wide receiver battle.

“He’s done a really good job,” McVay said. “Mike is a guy that I’ve always been a huge fan of, extremely tough competitor, he’s got great speed, I think he’s catching the ball really consistently. Eric Yarber and Liam Coen – our receivers coaches – have done a great job really with that group as a whole. In a lot of instances, you talk about Brandin (Cooks), Robert (Woods), Cooper (Kupp) – Josh Reynolds now has really ascended to where you’re talking about him. And then I think Mike Thomas has really separated himself as one of those guys that stands out with the way that he’s consistently played.”

Thomas has always been someone who fans got excited about, only to be let down by either an injury or suspension. He missed the first four weeks of the 2017 season due to a PED violation, and last year he landed on IR after suffering a groin injury in Week 1.

He’s stuck around each time as a former sixth-round pick, so clearly McVay has seen something in him to warrant a roster spot.

“It’s really never been an issue about talent. He’s kind of had some unfortunate issues that have kept him out of the lineup due to injury, but he’s a special guy,” McVay continued. “Just love his consistent demeanor, he’s really valuable for ‘Bones’ (special teams coordinator John Fassel), but he’s a guy that we’re hoping can stay healthy because he can definitely help us at that receiver position.”

That doesn’t sound like someone who’s on track to be cut. Sure, McVay has said similar things about other players in the past, but Thomas has seemingly elevated his game in a big way this offseason.

Thomas is still competing with JoJo Natson, KhaDarel Hodge and a few undrafted free agents at wide receiver. At this point in time, though, he seems like the frontrunner to be WR5 – a spot that should almost certainly be safe when final roster cuts come.

Some on this site want to trade Thomas to a wide receiver needy team. I agree with that. Thomas could easily fetch a sixth.

I'd keep Hodge for sure, and maybe Webster/Bachman (loser of the sixth wide receiver battle goes to the practice squad) for returning.

If they have faith in several other receivers, AND can get a 6th for him on his walk year, sure, trade him. The Rams can always use more picks, especially since Snead knows what to do with them.

I'm not sure if one year of him is as valuable to other teams, though. But if the Rams can bring a 6th rounder back for their #5 WR on the last year of his rookie contract, great. And there's a non-zero chance that he impresses another team in a preseason game and an offer gets made, netting the Rams a pick and saving a tiny amount of cap space. At that point, it depends on how the Rams feel about the other options. They want the pick, but they also want to go to the Super Bowl again.

No bigger supporter of Thomas on here than me, but I laugh about the “trade him” talk.
8 career catches and a team is gonna give up a draft pick for him? Not a chance....

Or this could be McVay playing the role of a "pump and dump" stock trader and Thomas could get them a late pick or conditional pick.

The Eagles just traded a back up UDFA OT that has never played a game for a veteran back up in Eli Harold.

.

Go Mike. He's always passed the eye test. Now just stay healthy and make plays when his name is called.

I'm huge Thomas supporter. The guy is an elite gunner on special teams.

He also has the size and speed if everything comes together he may be more pliable than a guy like Reynolds - who I like but he'd likely garner better trade bait.

Thomas' biggest problem in my eyes has always been his ability to catch the routine ball.

He's fast enough, and with Bones' coaching he has learned how to use leverage very well. He can get open.

On our roster I feel he is likely the best fill in for a guy like Brandin Cooks.

I do like Hodge and I've been critical of him but I still am just not sure he has it to really create seperation consistently.

Jojo is another story. He has a ton of wiggle and speed. It is brought up often. He also has been apparently showing quite well in camp as a receiver - slot guy.

I think the KR/PR position is going to be one of the more intriguing position battles as the preseason progresses.

He can return punts and looks like he offers more than Natson on offense.

I’d rather trade Natson for a pick keep Thomas and Webster for return duties shared with Henderson, move Hodge to PS for insurance purposes.

I’m a big Hodge fan, so I’d be disappointed if keeping Thomas meant we’d lose Hodge.

Hodge has continued to impress, and last week was no different from what I saw in him all last year. Smooth as silk, great hands, precise routes— just looks pro-ready to me.

OTOH, Thomas has value on special teams. My main gripe with Thomas is that he’s had the dropsies in big moments.

IMHO Jojo is a lock as the PR, so it’s really down to Hodge vs Thomas for the last WR spot.

From the little I’ve seen I’d prefer Hodge over Thomas, but as always I have huge faith in McVay to make the smart decision.

There are 3 preseason games left for Thomas to show out, so yeah he could easily fetch a late pick if he plays well and the team elects to go another direction. If he does that they could keep him too, but his injury/availability might factor in to the decision.

The bottom of that WR chart is one of the best reasons to watch the remainder of preseason IMO. And when it comes to both him and Hodge both are going to be FA departures after the season regardless so I wouldn't say either of them is safe at this point. If Webster continues to improve there's a real good chance they make room for him because that club control does matter.

I'm wondering if maybe they try to lock him or Hodge up on the cheap though, with a 1 or 2 year extension to include a small bonus.

Rams sure appear to be well-endowed @ wide receivers this season but short on Tight Ends. Thomas, Hodge, Webster & Bachman all looked good to me. Other than Higbee & Everett the drop off from those two is dynamic.

I would be looking for a trade partner that has several good #2 type TE's & are in need of a good 2nd WR types..

Bravo, Bonifay! An excellent suggestion, man.

Rams appear to be 7 deep at WR, and that’s not counting JoJo or the Bachman kid.

So yeah, why not swap out a WR for a #2 type TE? Or, hell, some other positional player?

Hope he ousts Reynolds for the #4 spot (no knock on him), I just like Thomas's upside more
